Failure
العجز
15 verses
When skeptics demanded to know if the warnings of divine consequence were genuine, the Prophet was commanded to swear by his Lord that the promised end was true and that humanity fundamentally lacks the power to avert it (10:53). The scriptural vocabulary for human failure centers heavily on this concept of inability—the physical and existential impossibility of escaping or frustrating God's decree. As al-Zamakhshari notes when defining divine capability, God's absolute power stands as the direct opposite of this human weakness and inability (Tafsir al-Kashshaf, 4/193).
Can human mobility outrun consequence?
The text dismantles the idea that geographic distance offers safety. When a treaty dissolution granted idolaters four months to travel freely across the land, the declaration carried a sharp caveat: they must bear in mind that this freedom of movement would not allow them to escape God, and that persisting in defiance would yield public disgrace (9:2). This same reality was broadcast on the Day of the Great Pilgrimage, pairing the release from treaty obligations with a warning that turning away offers no escape route (9:3).
The assertion that wrongdoers cannot simply flee across the earth is absolute. Without God, they possess no protectors, and attempting to evade accountability only guarantees a doubled punishment for those who refuse to hear or see (11:20). Ultimately, the Prophet is instructed never to think disbelievers can outmaneuver God geographically, as the Fire remains their final, inescapable home (24:57).
Does earthly strength prevent failure?
Wealth, military might, and temporary victories frequently create an illusion of invulnerability. The verses command observers to travel the land and examine the physical ruins of predecessors who met their end despite being vastly superior in strength to the present generation (35:44). Human power is localized and easily broken, whereas God cannot be frustrated by anything existing in the heavens or on the earth. Because His omniscience and omnipotence are absolute, weakness never approaches His domain—a theological boundary highlighted by Ibn Kamal Basha (Tafsir Ibn Kamal Basha, 6/7).
Due to this sheer disparity, the text warns disbelievers not to operate under the assumption that they have permanently won their worldly conflicts, stating plainly that their failure to escape is guaranteed (8:59).
The guaranteed arrival of these consequences bypasses every human attempt at evasion (6:134). Their manifestation depends entirely on divine will; as the text explicitly notes, it is God who brings the reality down if He wishes, stripping humanity of any ability to flee (11:33). The evil effects of past actions inevitably catch up to contemporary wrongdoers, just as they struck previous civilizations (39:51). This absolute control over outcomes extends directly into mundane routines. The ultimate demonstration of human inability is that people cannot frustrate their Creator, nor can they prevent the promised end from catching them suddenly right in the midst of their everyday comings and goings (16:46).

What you are promised is sure to come, and you cannot escape.

A release by God and His Messenger from the treaty you [believers] made with the idolaters [is announced]––
you [idolaters] may move freely about the land for four months, but you should bear in mind both that you will not escape God, and that God will disgrace those who defy [Him].
On the Day of the Great Pilgrimage [there will be] a proclamation from God and His Messenger to all people: ‘God and His Messenger are released from [treaty] obligations to the idolaters. It will be better for you [idolaters] if you repent; know that you cannot escape God if you turn away.’ [Prophet], warn those who ignore [God] that they will have a painful punishment.
They ask you [Prophet], ‘Is it true?’ Say, ‘Yes, by my Lord, it is true, and you cannot escape it.’
They will not escape on earth, and there will be no one other than God to protect them. Their punishment will be doubled. They could not hear, and they did not see.
He said, ‘It is God who will bring it down, if He wishes, and you will not be able to escape.
that it will not catch them suddenly in the midst of their comings and goings- for they cannot frustrate God-
Do not think [Prophet] that the disbelievers can escape God on earth; the Fire will be their final home, an evil end.
Have they not travelled in the land and seen how those before them met their end, although they were superior to them in strength? God is not to be frustrated by anything in the heavens or on the earth: He is all knowing, all powerful.
they suffered its evil effects. Today’s wrongdoers will also suffer the evil effects of their deeds: they will not escape.
you cannot escape Him anywhere on earth: you have no protector or helper other than God.
Those who fail to respond to God’s call cannot escape God’s power anywhere on earth, nor will they have any protector against Him: such people have clearly gone far astray.
We know we can never frustrate God on earth; we can never escape Him.
