The Quranic vocabulary of work and action draws a sharp line between the flawless handiwork of God and the fraught, often misguided efforts of humans and unseen forces. Where divine action produces physical provisions for human benefit (36:71) and moves mountains (27:88), earthly actions are constantly evaluated for their source, their endurance, and their underlying sincerity.

What elevates a human deed?

While human actions are heavily scrutinized, righteous work is defined by its endurance and intention. Muhammad Abu Zahra notes that the frequent pairing of righteous action with patience in the text indicates that good work requires the stamina to continue (Zahrat al-Tafasir, 7/3675). Classical commentators also highlight a reciprocal, elevating relationship between spoken words and physical deeds. Discussing how actions are accepted, Mawsu'at al-Tafsir al-Ma'thur (18/326) details that God rejects an unrighteous deed even if accompanied by good words, whereas a person who speaks well and performs a righteous deed finds that their physical action elevates their words. Al-Tha'labi notes a debate among scholars on this mechanism, with some asserting that it is actually the good speech—the pure intention and declaration of faith—that elevates the physical work, meaning no physical action is accepted unless it is rooted in this purity (Tafsir al-Tha'labi, 22/171).

Beyond basic acceptance, Ibn Uthaymin specifies that actions are not uniform in value. Their excellence fluctuates based on several variables: the specific doer, the genus or type of work, the time and place it occurs, the manner in which it is executed, and the depth of the doer's sincerity (Tafsir al-Uthaymin, 3/269).

What constitutes the work of Satan?

The Quran explicitly labels certain destructive acts as the direct handiwork of Satan. Intoxicants, gambling, idolatrous practices, and divining with arrows are categorized as repugnant acts and "Satan’s doing" that must be shunned for a person to prosper (5:90). The text also extends this definition to moments of lethal loss of control. When Moses enters a city unnoticed and finds two men fighting—one his kinsman, the other an enemy—he strikes the enemy with his fist and kills him. Moses immediately recognizes the nature of the transgression, declaring, "This must be Satan’s work: clearly he is a misleading enemy" (28:15).

In contrast to righteous action, work rooted in deception or dark arts ultimately fails. When Moses confronts magicians, he is told to throw down what is in his right hand so that it will swallow up what they produced. Their efforts are dismissed because "They have only produced the tricks of a sorcerer, and a sorcerer will not prosper, wherever he goes" (20:69).

How is divine work described?

Against the flawed attempts of human trickery and Satan's destructive prompts, the text positions the absolute perfection of divine work. The physical world is entirely the product of things made by God's hands, such as the livestock created for humans to control (36:71). The ultimate scale by which human deeds are measured is held by the One whose own handiwork moves the very earth. You will see the mountains and think they are firmly fixed, but they will float away like clouds: this is the handiwork of God who has perfected all things, fully aware of what you do (27:88).
