Victorious

A divine decree anchors the Quranic concept of triumph: "God has written, ‘I shall most certainly win, I and My messengers’" (58:21). This establishes an unbending rule where ultimate success belongs exclusively to the Creator and those who align with His directives. The framework strips victory of its usual earthly metrics—survival, immediate dominance, or the acquisition of spoils. Instead, success is fundamentally a transaction. Believers are asked to trade the fleeting life of this world for the enduring life to come, engaging in righteous struggle with the assurance that whether they are killed or emerge victorious, God will grant them a great reward (4:74).

How is true victory measured?

Triumph is persistently tied to internal states and deliberate actions rather than mere battlefield outcomes. Those who believe, migrate, and strive hard in God’s way using both their possessions and their own persons are elevated to a much higher rank in God's eyes, and it is they who will triumph (9:20). The standard for this success demands strict adherence: whoever obeys God and His Messenger, stands in awe of Him, and keeps their duty will be triumphant (24:52).

Physical death during this striving does not signify defeat. As Abd al-Aziz al-Tarefe notes on the subject of striving (Al-Tafsir wal-Bayan, 2/876), a person killed in sincere struggle holds immense virtue, surpassing even the one who survives a conflict to safely collect spoils. True success is ultimately declared at the final judgment as a reward for endurance. God announces to the successful, "Today I have rewarded them for their patience: it is they who will succeed" (23:111).

Who makes up the winning party?

The verses designate a specific alliance guaranteed to prevail. Those who seek protection exclusively from God, His Messenger, and the believers constitute "God’s party," and God’s party is sure to triumph (5:56). The text explicitly promises that those who support the divine cause will be the winners (37:173).

This support requires active, sometimes bold participation, even in the face of fear. When a group was paralyzed by the prospect of facing a formidable enemy, two men whom God had blessed urged them forward: "Go in to them through the gate and when you go in you will overcome them. If you are true believers, put your trust in God" (5:23). Earthly setbacks within this struggle are temporary; the text notes a historical instance in a nearby land where a defeated group would soon "reverse their defeat with a victory" (30:3).

The call to align with this winning faction echoes through history. Believers are urged to be "God’s helpers," mirroring the disciples of Jesus who answered his call to help God. In that era, when the Children of Israel fractured into believers and disbelievers, God supported the believers against their enemy, ensuring they "came out on top" (61:14).

The culmination of this reliance on the Almighty is total security, severing the connection between earthly vulnerability and ultimate failure. The guarantee extends beyond historical battlefields into eternal permanence. God will deliver those who took heed of Him to their place of safety: no harm will touch them, nor will they grieve (39:61).
