Trees

25 verses

Mentioned 25 times across the Quranic text, trees (al-shajar) stand as vital sources of sustenance, instruments of divine testing, and exact physical metaphors. The Arabic term distinguishes a specific biological structure; as classical exegetes like al-Kalbi point out, shajar refers precisely to plants that possess a solid trunk, separating them from stemless ground vegetation (Mawsu'at al-Tafsir al-Ma'thur, 21/79).

What was the forbidden tree in the Garden?

When God placed Adam and his wife in the Garden, He permitted them to eat freely from its provisions with a single boundary: "do not go near this tree, or you will both become wrongdoers" (2:35, 7:19). The Quran never names the botanical species of the plant, focusing entirely on its function as a measure of human obedience.

Satan weaponized this single prohibition by renaming the plant, whispering to Adam that it was the "tree of immortality and power that never decays" (20:120). He claimed God only forbade it to prevent them from becoming angels or immortals (7:20). Lured by these lies, the couple ate from it. The immediate physical consequence was the sudden exposure of their nakedness, leading them to frantically stitch together leaves from the Garden to cover themselves, while God called out to remind them of His direct warning that Satan was their sworn enemy (7:22).

How does the Quran use trees as metaphors?

Beyond the physical flora of the earth, the anatomy of a tree serves to map out the nature of truth and falsehood. God compares a "good word" to a "good tree whose root is firm and whose branches are high in the sky" (14:24). This structural image illustrates how righteous beliefs and speech are deeply anchored, drawing life from an unshakeable foundation while yielding continuous benefit above ground.

In sharp contrast, an "evil word" is likened to a "rotten tree, uprooted from the surface of the earth, with no power to endure" (14:26). Without a root system, falsehood lacks stability and cannot sustain itself. Trees also feature in warnings; the Quran mentions a "cursed tree" that serves strictly as a test for people, noting that encountering this vision only increases the insolence of those who reject the truth (17:60).

What do trees reveal about the natural order?

In the physical landscape, trees are woven into the ecological survival of humans and animals. God sends down water from the sky to bring forth shrubs and trees where livestock can feed (16:10). They provide natural architecture, as God directly inspired the bee to "build yourselves houses in the mountains and trees and what people construct" (16:68). Classical scholars highlight the miraculous contrasts found within this wood; citing Qatadah on the phenomenon of green trees producing fire, Ibn Kathir notes the divine power required to extract a burning flame from living, moisture-filled timber (Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 6/360).

Far from being mere background scenery, trees are active participants in both the physical environment and the spiritual hierarchy. They provide the leaves that covered the first human mistake and the branches that shelter the inspired bee. Ultimately, they stand as conscious entities that yield entirely to divine authority, placed alongside the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, and the animals as creations that inherently submit to God (22:18).

2:35 Al-Baqarah

We said, ‘Adam, live with your wife in this garden. Both of you eat freely there as you will, but do not go near this tree, or you will both become wrongdoers.’

4:65 An-Nisa

By your Lord, they will not be true believers until they let you decide between them in all matters of dispute, and find no resistance in their souls to your decisions, accepting them totally-

7:19 Al-A'raf

But you and your wife, Adam, live in the Garden. Both of you eat whatever you like, but do not go near this tree or you will become wrongdoers.’

7:20 Al-A'raf

Satan whispered to them so as to expose their nakedness, which had been hidden from them: he said, ‘Your Lord only forbade you this tree to prevent you becoming angels or immortals,’

7:22 Al-A'raf

he lured them with lies. Their nakedness became exposed to them when they had eaten from the tree: they began to put together leaves from the Garden to cover themselves. Their Lord called to them, ‘Did I not forbid you to approach that tree? Did I not warn you that Satan was your sworn enemy?’

14:24 Ibrahim

[Prophet], do you not see how God makes comparisons? A good word is like a good tree whose root is firm and whose branches are high in the sky,

14:26 Ibrahim

but an evil word is like a rotten tree, uprooted from the surface of the earth, with no power to endure.

16:10 An-Nahl

It is He who sends down water for you from the sky, from which comes a drink for you, and the shrubs that you feed to your animals.

16:68 An-Nahl

And your Lord inspired the bee, saying, ‘Build yourselves houses in the mountains and trees and what people construct.

17:60 Al-Isra

[Prophet], We have told you that your Lord knows all about human beings. The vision We showed you was only a test for people, as was the cursed tree [mentioned] in the Quran. We warn them, but this only increases their insolence.

20:120 Taha

But Satan whispered to Adam, saying, ‘Adam, shall I show you the tree of immortality and power that never decays?’

22:18 Al-Hajj

Do you not realize [Prophet] that everything in the heavens and earth submits to God: the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, and the animals? So do many human beings, though for many others punishment is well deserved. Anyone disgraced by God will have no one to honour him: God does whatever He will.

23:20 Al-Mu'minun

and a tree, growing out of Mount Sinai, that produces oil and seasoning for your food.

24:35 An-Nur

God is the Light of the heavens and earth. His Light is like this: there is a niche, and in it a lamp, the lamp inside a glass, a glass like a glittering star, fuelled from a blessed olive tree from neither east nor west, whose oil almost gives light even when no fire touches it- light upon light- God guides whoever He will to his Light; God draws such comparisons for people; God has full knowledge of everything-

27:60 An-Naml

Who created the heavens and earth? Who sends down water from the sky for you- with which We cause gardens of delight to grow: you have no power to make the trees grow in them- is it another god beside God? No! But they are people who take others to be equal with God.

31:27 Luqman

If all the trees on earth were pens and all the seas, with seven more seas besides, [were ink,] still God’s words would not run out: God is almighty and all wise.

36:80 Ya-Sin

It is He who produces fire for you out of the green tree- lo and behold!- and from this you kindle fire.

37:62 As-Saffat

Is this the better welcome, or the tree of Zaqqum,

37:64 As-Saffat

This tree grows in the heart of the blazing Fire,

37:146 As-Saffat

and made a gourd tree grow above him.

44:43 Ad-Dukhan

The tree of Zaqqum

48:18 Al-Fath

God was pleased with the believers when they swore allegiance to you [Prophet] under the tree: He knew what was in their hearts and so He sent tranquillity down to them and rewarded them with a speedy triumph

55:6 Ar-Rahman

the plants and the trees submit to His designs;

56:52 Al-Waqi'ah

will eat from the bitter tree of Zaqqum,

56:72 Al-Waqi'ah

is it you who make the wood for it grow or We?
