In the Quran, filth (rijs) is rarely a matter of mud or soil; it is fundamentally a spiritual and intellectual contagion. The text classifies both a plate of forbidden meat and a rigid, unreasoning mind as forms of contamination. While early revelations issue sweeping commands to the Prophet to "keep away from all filth" (74:5), later verses categorize exactly what constitutes this revulsion, framing it not merely as a state of being, but as an active force—often Satan's doing (5:90)—that must be deliberately shunned.
Is filth physical or spiritual in the Quran?
The Quran identifies several practices as inherent contaminations. Intoxicants, gambling, idolatry, and divining with arrows are grouped together as repugnant acts (5:90). The text explicitly commands believers to "shun the filth of idolatrous beliefs and practices and shun false utterances" (22:30). As Al-Wahidi notes (Al-Tafsir al-Basit, 15/382), when the Quran attaches filth to idols, the idol itself is classified as the filth, entirely distinct from any concept of physical dirtiness.
This spiritual taint extends to human behavior and intent. Hypocrites who swear false oaths to avoid their obligations are described as inherently "loathsome," with the decree that Hell will be their home as a reward for their actions (9:95).
What foods are considered loathsome?
Physical consumption is also subject to the boundaries of purity. The Quran specifies a narrow list of dietary prohibitions, declaring that nothing is forbidden for people to eat except carrion, flowing blood, pig’s meat—which is explicitly labeled as "loathsome"—or sinful offerings over which any name other than God’s has been invoked (6:145). Even within these strict limits, the text recognizes human frailty, lifting the prohibition for someone forced by acute hunger rather than desire or excess, emphasizing divine forgiveness.
How does disbelief create internal foulness?
The most severe descriptions of filth apply to the intellect and the heart. The Quran states that God brings disgrace on those who "do not use their reason" (10:100). When a person rejects guidance, the resulting spiritual filth manifests as a suffocating internal reaction: God constricts their breast as if they were climbing up into the skies, making the foulness of their disbelief rebound directly against them (6:125).
For those who are perverse at heart, even divine revelation fails to act as a cleanser. Instead, each new sura only adds further to their perversity, cementing their state until they die disbelieving (9:125). Conversely, total purity is a matter of divine grace; the text highlights God's specific wish to keep uncleanness away from the people of the Prophet’s House and to "purify you thoroughly" (33:33).
Filth ultimately functions as both a human choice and a divine consequence. When communities stubbornly argue over mere names and invented gods, they place themselves directly in the path of their Lord's "loathing and anger" (7:71). This contamination of society is met with strict boundaries, promising a painful punishment in this world and the next for those who like indecency to spread among the believers: God knows and you do not (24:19).

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَا ٱلْخَمْرُ وَٱلْمَيْسِرُ وَٱلْأَنصَابُ وَٱلْأَزْلَـٰمُ رِجْسٌ مِّنْ عَمَلِ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ فَٱجْتَنِبُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
You who believe, intoxicants and gambling, idolatrous practices, and [divining with] arrows are repugnant acts- Satan’s doing- shun them so that you may prosper.
فَمَن يُرِدِ ٱللَّهُ أَن يَهْدِيَهُۥ يَشْرَحْ صَدْرَهُۥ لِلْإِسْلَـٰمِ ۖ وَمَن يُرِدْ أَن يُضِلَّهُۥ يَجْعَلْ صَدْرَهُۥ ضَيِّقًا حَرَجًا كَأَنَّمَا يَصَّعَّدُ فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يَجْعَلُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلرِّجْسَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ
When God wishes to guide someone, He opens their breast to islam; when He wishes to lead them astray, He closes and constricts their breast as if they were climbing up to the skies. That is how God makes the foulness of those who do not believe rebound against them.
قُل لَّآ أَجِدُ فِى مَآ أُوحِىَ إِلَىَّ مُحَرَّمًا عَلَىٰ طَاعِمٍ يَطْعَمُهُۥٓ إِلَّآ أَن يَكُونَ مَيْتَةً أَوْ دَمًا مَّسْفُوحًا أَوْ لَحْمَ خِنزِيرٍ فَإِنَّهُۥ رِجْسٌ أَوْ فِسْقًا أُهِلَّ لِغَيْرِ ٱللَّهِ بِهِۦ ۚ فَمَنِ ٱضْطُرَّ غَيْرَ بَاغٍ وَلَا عَادٍ فَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
[Prophet], say, ‘In all that has been revealed to me, I find nothing forbidden for people to eat, except for carrion, flowing blood, pig’s meat- it is loathsome- or a sinful offering over which any name other than God’s has been invoked.’ But if someone is forced by hunger, rather than desire or excess, then God is most forgiving and most merciful.
قَالَ قَدْ وَقَعَ عَلَيْكُم مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ رِجْسٌ وَغَضَبٌ ۖ أَتُجَـٰدِلُونَنِى فِىٓ أَسْمَآءٍ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّا نَزَّلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَـٰنٍ ۚ فَٱنتَظِرُوٓا۟ إِنِّى مَعَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْمُنتَظِرِينَ
He said, ‘You are already set to receive your Lord’s loathing and anger. Are you arguing with me about mere names you and your forefathers invented, names for which God has given no sanction? Just wait; I too am waiting.’
سَيَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ لَكُمْ إِذَا ٱنقَلَبْتُمْ إِلَيْهِمْ لِتُعْرِضُوا۟ عَنْهُمْ ۖ فَأَعْرِضُوا۟ عَنْهُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ رِجْسٌ ۖ وَمَأْوَىٰهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ
When you return to them, they will swear to you by God in order to make you leave them alone- so leave them alone: they are loathsome, and Hell will be their home as a reward for their actions-
وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ فَزَادَتْهُمْ رِجْسًا إِلَىٰ رِجْسِهِمْ وَمَاتُوا۟ وَهُمْ كَـٰفِرُونَ
but, as for the perverse at heart, each new sura adds further to their perversity. They die disbelieving.
وَمَا كَانَ لِنَفْسٍ أَن تُؤْمِنَ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَيَجْعَلُ ٱلرِّجْسَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَعْقِلُونَ
No soul can believe except by God’s will, and He brings disgrace on those who do not use their reason.
ذَٰلِكَ وَمَن يُعَظِّمْ حُرُمَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّهُۥ عِندَ رَبِّهِۦ ۗ وَأُحِلَّتْ لَكُمُ ٱلْأَنْعَـٰمُ إِلَّا مَا يُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ ۖ فَٱجْتَنِبُوا۟ ٱلرِّجْسَ مِنَ ٱلْأَوْثَـٰنِ وَٱجْتَنِبُوا۟ قَوْلَ ٱلزُّورِ
All this [is ordained by God]: anyone who honours the sacred ordinances of God will have good rewards from his Lord. Livestock have been made lawful to you, except for what has been explicitly forbidden. Shun the filth of idolatrous beliefs and practices and shun false utterances.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يُحِبُّونَ أَن تَشِيعَ ٱلْفَـٰحِشَةُ فِى ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ وَأَنتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
A painful punishment waits in this world and the next for those who like indecency to spread among the believers: God knows and you do not.
وَقَرْنَ فِى بُيُوتِكُنَّ وَلَا تَبَرَّجْنَ تَبَرُّجَ ٱلْجَـٰهِلِيَّةِ ٱلْأُولَىٰ ۖ وَأَقِمْنَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتِينَ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَأَطِعْنَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥٓ ۚ إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ لِيُذْهِبَ عَنكُمُ ٱلرِّجْسَ أَهْلَ ٱلْبَيْتِ وَيُطَهِّرَكُمْ تَطْهِيرًا
stay at home, and do not flaunt your finery as they used to in the pagan past; keep up the prayer, give the prescribed alms, and obey God and His Messenger. God wishes to keep uncleanness away from you, people of the [Prophet’s] House, and to purify you thoroughly.
وَٱلرُّجْزَ فَٱهْجُرْ
keep away from all filth;
