The command to uphold strict legal justice and the command to distribute cherished wealth both find their most immediate testing ground in a believer's own family tree. From the ancient pledge taken from the Children of Israel (2:83) to the detailed arithmetic of Islamic inheritance, the Quran anchors financial and moral obligations directly to blood relations. Goodness to kin is not treated as a mere social courtesy, but as an explicit duty linked directly to the worship of God (4:36).

Where does financial support begin? When believers ask what they should spend of their wealth, the Quran designates parents and close relatives as the primary recipients (2:215). The text defines righteousness in these highly concrete terms; true goodness does not consist merely in turning one's face East or West in prayer, but in giving away wealth, "however much they cherish it," to relatives, orphans, and the needy (2:177). This prioritization establishes the extended family as the foundational safety net in the Quranic social structure, preceding neighbors, travelers, and the broader community.

How are estates divided among relatives? The Quran systematically appoints heirs for whatever parents and close relatives leave behind (4:33). Before the revelation of these specific inheritance brackets, the early Muslim Emigrants and Helpers inherited from one another based on their alliance and migration, until Quranic law firmly prioritized blood relatives for inheritance, as noted in Al-Tafsir al-Wasit (3/1650).

The text guarantees a share for both men and women, "whether the legacy be small or large" (4:7). The exact distribution depends on the surviving family structure: a son receives the equivalent share of two daughters, while parents each inherit a sixth if the deceased leaves children, or a third for the mother if the parents are the sole heirs and there are no brothers (4:11). The text also outlines leaving a proper bequest for parents and close relatives as a duty for those mindful of God (2:180). Even distant relatives who do not qualify for a fixed fractional share but are present when the estate is distributed are to be given something from it and spoken to kindly (4:8).

Does family loyalty override justice? While financial generosity heavily favors kin, legal truth strictly overrides family loyalty. The Quran commands believers to uphold justice and bear witness for God, even if that testimony stands directly against themselves, their parents, or their close relatives (4:135). The wealth or poverty of the relative cannot be allowed to sway this testimony, as God is the one who takes care of both. This absolute standard applies equally to witnessing deathbed bequests, where chosen witnesses must swear by God not to sell their testimony for any price or hide the truth, "even if a close relative is involved" (5:106).

The Quran acknowledges the complexity of these blood bonds, binding them tightly to a believer's financial responsibilities while severing them entirely in matters of legal testimony. In establishing the fixed laws of inheritance that bind these families together across generations, the text reminds believers that they cannot know which of their parents or children is more beneficial to them, instituting the precise division of wealth as a direct law from an all-knowing God (4:11).

Remember when We took a pledge from the Children of Israel: ‘Worship none but God; be good to your parents and kinsfolk, to orphans and the poor; speak good words to all people; keep up the prayer and pay the prescribed alms.’ Then all but a few of you turned away and paid no heed.

Goodness does not consist in turning your face towards East or West. The truly good are those who believe in God and the Last Day, in the angels, the Scripture, and the prophets; who give away some of their wealth, however much they cherish it, to their relatives, to orphans, the needy, travellers and beggars, and to liberate those in bondage; those who keep up the prayer and pay the prescribed alms; who keep pledges whenever they make them; who are steadfast in misfortune, adversity, and times of danger. These are the ones who are true, and it is they who are aware of God.

it is prescribed that he should make a proper bequest to parents and close relatives- a duty incumbent on those who are mindful of God.

They ask you [Prophet] what they should give. Say, ‘Whatever you give should be for parents, close relatives, orphans, the needy, and travellers. God is well aware of whatever good you do.

Men shall have a share in what their parents and closest relatives leave, and women shall have a share in what their parents and closest relatives leave, whether the legacy be small or large: this is ordained by God.

If other relatives, orphans, or needy people are present at the distribution, give them something too, and speak kindly to them.

Concerning your children, God commands you that a son should have the equivalent share of two daughters. If there are only daughters, two or more should share two-thirds of the inheritance, if one, she should have half. Parents inherit a sixth each if the deceased leaves children; if he leaves no children and his parents are his sole heirs, his mother has a third, unless he has brothers, in which case she has a sixth. [In all cases, the distribution comes] after payment of any bequests or debts. You cannot know which of your parents or your children is more beneficial to you: this is a law from God, and He is all knowing, all wise.

We have appointed heirs for everything that parents and close relatives leave behind, including those to whom you have pledged your hands [in marriage], so give them their share: God is witness to everything.

Worship God; join nothing with Him. Be good to your parents, to relatives, to orphans, to the needy, to neighbours near and far, to travellers in need, and to your slaves. God does not like arrogant, boastful people,

You who believe, uphold justice and bear witness to God, even if it is against yourselves, your parents, or your close relatives. Whether the person is rich or poor, God can best take care of both. Refrain from following your own desire, so that you can act justly- if you distort or neglect justice, God is fully aware of what you do.

You who believe, when death approaches any of you, let two just men from among you act as witnesses to the making of a bequest, or two men from another people if you are journeying in the land when death approaches. Keep the two witnesses back after prayer, if you have any doubts, and make them both swear by God, ‘We will not sell our testimony for any price, even if a close relative is involved. We will not hide God’s testimony, for then we should be doing wrong.’

Say, ‘Come! I will tell you what your Lord has really forbidden you. Do not ascribe anything as a partner to Him; be good to your parents; do not kill your children in fear of poverty’- We will provide for you and for them- ‘ stay well away from committing obscenities, whether openly or in secret; do not take the life God has made sacred, except by right. This is what He commands you to do: perhaps you will use your reason.

Stay well away from the property of orphans, except with the best [intentions], until they come of age; give full measure and weight, according to justice’- We do not burden any soul with more than it can bear- ‘ when you speak, be just, even if it concerns a relative; keep any promises you make in God’s name. This is what He commands you to do, so that you may take heed’-

Know that one-fifth of your battle gains belongs to God and the Messenger, to close relatives and orphans, to the needy and travellers, if you believe in God and the revelation We sent down to Our servant on the day of the decision, the day when the two forces met in battle. God has power over all things.

And those who came to believe afterwards, and emigrated and struggled alongside you, they are part of you, but relatives still have prior claim over one another in God’s Scripture: God has full knowledge of all things.

Say [Prophet], ‘If your fathers, sons, brothers, wives, tribes, the wealth you have acquired, the trade which you fear will decline, and the dwellings you love are dearer to you than God and His Messenger and the struggle in His cause, then wait until God brings about His punishment.’ God does not guide those who break away.

It is not fitting for the Prophet and the believers to ask forgiveness for the idolaters- even if they are related to them- after having been shown that they are the inhabitants of the Blaze:

We sent messengers before you and gave them wives and offspring; no messenger was given the power to produce a miracle except with God’s permission. There was a Scripture for every age:

God commands justice, doing good, and generosity towards relatives and He forbids what is shameful, blameworthy, and oppressive. He teaches you, so that you may take heed.

Your Lord has commanded that you should worship none but Him, and that you be kind to your parents. If either or both of them reach old age with you, say no word that shows impatience with them, and do not be harsh with them, but speak to them respectfully

Give relatives their due, and the needy, and travellers- do not squander your wealth wastefully:

I fear [what] my kinsmen [will do] when I am gone, for my wife is barren, so grant me a successor––a gift from You––

Those who have been graced with bounty and plenty should not swear that they will [no longer] give to kinsmen, the poor, those who emigrated in God’s way: let them pardon and forgive. Do you not wish that God should forgive you? God is most forgiving and merciful.

Warn your nearest kinsfolk

When Our messengers came to Lot, he was troubled and distressed on their account. They said, ‘Have no fear or grief: we shall certainly save you and your household, except for your wife- she will be one of those who stay behind-

So give their due to the near relative, the needy, and the wayfarer- that is best for those whose goal is God’s approval: these are the ones who will prosper.

The Prophet is more protective towards the believers than they are themselves, while his wives are their mothers. In God’s Scripture, blood-relatives have a stronger claim than other believers and emigrants, though you may still bestow gifts on your proteges. All this is written in the Scripture.

it is of this that God gives good news to His servants who believe and do good deeds. Say [Prophet], ‘I ask no reward from you for this, only the affection due to kin.’ If anyone does good, We shall increase it for him; God is most forgiving and most appreciative.

[Prophet], you will not find people who truly believe in God and the Last Day giving their loyalty to those who oppose God and His Messenger, even though they may be their fathers, sons, brothers, or other relations: these are the people in whose hearts God has inscribed faith, and whom He has strengthened with His spirit. He will let them enter Gardens graced with flowing streams, where they will stay: God is well pleased with them, and they with Him. They are on God’s side, and God’s side will be the one to prosper.

Whatever gains God has turned over to His Messenger from the inhabitants of the villages belong to God, the Messenger, kinsfolk, orphans, the needy, the traveller in need- this is so that they do not just circulate among those of you who are rich––so accept whatever the Messenger gives you, and abstain from whatever he forbids you. Be mindful of God: God is severe in punishment.

Neither your kinsfolk nor your children will be any use to you on the Day of Resurrection: He will separate you out. God sees everything you do.

Believers, even among your spouses and your children you have some enemies- beware of them- but if you overlook their offences, forgive them, pardon them, then God is all forgiving, all merciful.

Your wealth and your children are only a test for you. There is great reward with God:

When they have completed their appointed term, either keep them honourably, or part with them honourably. Call two just witnesses from your people and establish witness for the sake of God. Anyone who believes in God and the Last Day should heed this: God will find a way out for those who are mindful of Him,
