Ransom

17 verses

If an evildoer possessed all the gold on earth, and then doubled that amount, it would not buy their safety on the Day of Resurrection (5:36, 39:47). The principle of ransom (fidyah) draws an absolute boundary between this world—where compensation can dissolve a marriage contract or free a prisoner of war—and the hereafter, where material exchange ceases entirely. As Ibn Arafa notes (Tafsir Ibn Arafa, 4/162), ransom fundamentally describes that by which a person buys their freedom, yet the verses repeatedly warn that no such payment will be accepted from those facing divine judgment.

Can wealth save a soul in the Hereafter?

The most frequent mention of ransom is a stark warning about its absence in the next life. The verses describe the sheer scale of what the condemned would willingly pay to escape their reality. A soul that dies in disbelief will not be saved even if it offers "enough gold to fill the entire earth" (3:91). Other passages escalate this impossible figure, stating that those who rejected their Lord would gladly surrender the earth's assets twice over to avoid their terrible reckoning (13:18, 39:47). On a Day when no soul can stand in for another, every avenue of worldly influence is shut down: no intercession will work, no compensation will be accepted, and no external help will arrive (2:48, 2:123). Instead of a negotiation, those destined for the Fire are met with the finality that absolutely no ransom will be taken from them (57:15).

How does ransom function in human disputes?

While spiritual ransom is impossible, the physical exchange of assets remains a regulated part of human affairs, particularly in the aftermath of conflict. During wartime, captives taken in battle are to be bound firmly until hostilities end, after which they can be released either through an act of grace or by the exaction of a ransom (47:4). Yet this practical allowance is not a shield for hypocrisy. The text sharply condemns groups who unjustly expelled their own people from their homes and aided in aggression against them, only to later pay ransom to set them free when they became captives (2:85).

Ransom also applies to the dissolution of marriage. Normally, a husband cannot take back any gifts or wealth he has given to his wife if they divorce. However, if both parties fear they cannot maintain the bounds set by God, the woman may offer financial compensation—a localized form of ransom—to secure her release from the marriage contract without blame on either side (2:229).

What was the momentous sacrifice?

Beyond legal transactions and warnings of the Hereafter, the concept appears in one of the most significant acts of devotion described in the text. When a prophet is tested with the command to sacrifice his son, divine intervention halts the blade before the act is completed. Rather than taking the son's life, God spares him by declaring, "We ransomed his son with a momentous sacrifice" (37:107).

The divide between the material and the eternal remains absolute. In the physical world, a life can be spared by a momentous substitute, a marriage dissolved by returning a gift, and a prisoner freed by grace or gold. But when the final reckoning arrives, every soul that has done evil will look upon the punishment, repent in secret, and gladly offer everything on earth, only to be judged with perfect justice where no fraction of the sentence can be bought away (10:54).

2:48 Al-Baqarah

Guard yourselves against a Day when no soul will stand in place of another, no intercession will be accepted for it, nor any ransom; nor will they be helped.

2:85 Al-Baqarah

Yet here you are, killing one another and driving some of your own people from their homes, helping one another in sin and aggression against them. If they come to you as captives, you still pay to set them free, although you had no right to drive them out. So do you believe in some parts of the Scripture and not in others? The punishment for those of you who do this will be nothing but disgrace in this life, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be condemned to the harshest torment: God is not unaware of what you do.

2:123 Al-Baqarah

and beware of a Day when no soul can stand in for another. No compensation will be accepted from it, nor intercession be of use to it, nor will anyone be helped.

2:229 Al-Baqarah

Divorce can happen twice, and [each time] wives either be kept on in an acceptable manner or released in a good way. It is not lawful for you to take back anything that you have given [your wives], except where both fear that they cannot maintain [the marriage] within the bounds set by God: if you [arbiters] suspect that the couple may not be able to do this, then there will be no blame on either of them if the woman opts to give something for her release. These are the bounds set by God: do not overstep them. It is those who overstep God’s bounds who are doing wrong.

3:91 Ali 'Imran

those who disbelieve and die disbelievers will not be saved even if they offer enough gold to fill the entire earth. Agonizing torment is in store for them, and there will be no one to help them.

5:36 Al-Ma'idah

If the disbelievers possessed all that is in the earth and twice as much again and offered it to ransom themselves from torment on the Day of Resurrection, it would not be accepted from them- they will have a painful torment.

10:54 Yunus

Every soul that has done evil, if it possessed all that is on the earth, would gladly offer it as ransom. When they see the punishment, they will repent in secret, but they will be judged with justice and will not be wronged.

13:18 Ar-Ra'd

There will be the best of rewards for those who respond to their Lord; those who do not respond would willingly give away the earth’s contents twice over, if they had it, in order to ransom themselves, so terrible will be their reckoning. Hell will be their home, and their bed wretched.

37:107 As-Saffat

We ransomed his son with a momentous sacrifice,

39:47 Az-Zumar

If the evildoers possessed the earth’s assets twice over they would offer them to ransom themselves from the terrible suffering on the Day of Resurrection: God will show them something they had not reckoned with,

47:4 Muhammad

When you meet the disbelievers in battle, strike them in the neck, and once they are defeated, bind any captives firmly––later you can release them by grace or by ransom––until the toils of war have ended. That [is the way]. God could have defeated them Himself if He had willed, but His purpose is to test some of you by means of others. He will not let the deeds of those who are killed for His cause come to nothing;

57:15 Al-Hadid

Today no ransom will be accepted from you or from the disbelievers: your home is the Fire- that is where you belong––a miserable destination!’

70:10 Al-Ma'arij

when no friend will ask about his friend,

70:11 Al-Ma'arij

even when they are within sight of one another. The guilty person will wish he could save himself from the suffering of that Day by sacrificing his sons,

70:12 Al-Ma'arij

his spouse, his brother,

70:13 Al-Ma'arij

the kinsfolk who gave him shelter,

70:14 Al-Ma'arij

and everyone on earth, if it could save him.
