Treasure

13 verses

When Qarun amassed wealth so massive that the keys to his vaults weighed down an entire company of strong men, he claimed this fortune was simply the result of his own intellect (28:76-78). The textual treatment of kanz (treasure) systematically dismantles the human assumption that material riches signify divine approval. Instead, hoards of wealth serve as rigorous tests, temporary possessions, or, in rare cases of divine decree, preserved mercies for the vulnerable.

Why was the Prophet not given physical treasure?

Opponents of the Prophet Muhammad repeatedly questioned his legitimacy by measuring him against material standards. They demanded to know why no treasure was dropped down to him from the sky, or why he was not given a lush garden to supply his food, dismissing him as a man under a spell (11:12, 25:8). In response, God commanded the Prophet to clarify the strict boundaries of his mission. He was instructed to publicly state, "I do not have the treasures of God, nor do I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel" (6:50, 11:31). His role was restricted to following revelation and warning others, not dispensing material wealth. The text challenges his detractors' sense of entitlement by asking if they themselves possess or control the storehouses of the Lord's bounty (38:9, 52:37).

How does earthly wealth lead to ruin?

Those who hoard their riches and attribute their success solely to their own merit face sudden dispossession. Qarun, despite being from the people of Moses, oppressed his own community with his immense economic power. His people advised him not to gloat, reminding him that God does not love those who exult in their wealth (28:76). Because he insisted his riches were earned entirely through his own knowledge, he ignored the reality that God had already annihilated previous generations who held far greater power and wealth (28:78). When divine punishment arrives, accumulated riches offer no defense. As God brought ruin upon the oppressive predecessors, they were forced to permanently abandon their gardens, springs, noble dwellings, and carefully guarded treasures (26:57-58).

When is a hidden treasure a divine mercy?

While hoarded wealth often leads to arrogance, God sometimes preserves treasure to protect the righteous. In a town where two young orphans lived, a crumbling wall concealed a buried treasure belonging to them. Because their father had been a righteous man, God directed the rebuilding of the wall so the boys could reach physical maturity and safely unearth their inheritance as a direct mercy from their Lord (18:82). Classical commentators debated the exact nature of this inheritance. As al-Baghawi notes (Tafsir al-Baghawi, 5/196), while Ikrimah stated it was physical money, Said bin Jubayr suggested the treasure was actually scrolls containing knowledge. Ibn al-Jawzi (Zad al-Masir, 3/104) supports this interpretation, explaining that knowledge functions precisely like a treasure because its enduring benefit far exceeds what can be gained from mere currency.

Earthly riches remain entirely under the control of the Lord of Bounty, granted as a test of character or preserved as a delayed mercy. Those who hold vast wealth are faced with a singular directive: seek the life to come by means of what God has granted you, do not neglect your rightful share in this world, and do good to others as God has done good to you (28:77).

Say, ‘I do not have the treasures of God, nor do I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel. I only follow what is revealed to me.’ Say, ‘Is a blind person like one who can see? Why will you not reflect?’

So [Prophet] are you going to abandon some part of what is revealed to you, and let your heart be oppressed by it, because they say, ‘Why is no treasure sent down to him? Why has no angel come with him?’? You are only there to warn; it is God who is in charge of everything.

I am not telling you that I hold God’s treasures, or have any knowledge of what is hidden, or that I am an angel. Nor do I say that God will not grant any good to those who are despised in your eyes: God Himself knows best what is in their souls. If I did this I would be one of the wrongdoers.’

The wall belonged to two young orphans in the town and there was buried treasure beneath it belonging to them. Their father had been a righteous man, so your Lord intended them to reach maturity and then dig up their treasure as a mercy from your Lord. I did not do [these things] of my own accord: these are the explanations for those things you could not bear with patience.’

Why has he not been given treasure or a garden to supply his food?’ and the evildoers say, ‘The man you follow is simply under a spell.’

So it was that We made them leave their gardens and their springs,

their treasures and their noble dwellings-

Qarun was one of Moses’ people, but he oppressed them. We had given him such treasures that even their keys would have weighed down a whole company of strong men. His people said to him, ‘Do not gloat, for God does not like people who gloat.

Seek the life to come by means of what God has granted you, but do not neglect your rightful share in this world. Do good to others as God has done good to you. Do not seek to spread corruption in the land, for God does not love those who do this,’

but he answered, ‘This wealth was given to me on account of the knowledge I possess.’ Did he not know that God had destroyed many generations before him, who had greater power than him and built up greater wealth? The guilty will not be questioned about their sins.

38:9 ص

Do they possess the treasures of your Lord’s bounty, the Mighty, the All Giving?

Do they possess your Lord’s treasures or have control over them?

They are the ones who say, ‘Give nothing to those who follow God’s Messenger, until they abandon him’, but to God belong the treasures of the heavens and earth, though the hypocrites do not understand this.
