When the early prophets migrated toward the Levantine region, the territory corresponding to present-day Jordan became a primary stage for settlement and divine testing. Classical exegetes map the deployment of these messengers directly onto this geography. While Ibrahim settled across the river in Palestine, his nephew Lut was stationed in Jordan, from where God sent him as a warner to the people of Sodom (Tafsir al-Tha'labi, 12/ 435). This landscape of valleys and waterways served as a physical boundary separating faith from weakness. When the commander Talut later marched with his army in intense heat, the river he used to test his soldiers' discipline—commanding them not to drink—is identified by early commentators as lying precisely between Jordan and Palestine (Tafsir Muqatil bin Sulayman, 1/ 208).
Why did the Israelites refuse to cross the border?
Standing at the threshold of this territory, Moses commanded his people to advance into the holy land that God had ordained for them, warning them not to turn back lest they become losers (5:21). However, the sight of the land's current inhabitants paralyzed the camp. The Israelites reported that a "fearsome people" occupied the region, and they adamantly refused to cross over until those people evacuated first (5:22).
Amidst this widespread panic, two men who had been blessed by God stepped forward. They urged the terrified crowd to take immediate action, explaining that crossing the boundary was the only prerequisite for divine support. "Go in to them through the gate," they advised, promising that the moment they entered, they would overcome the opposition (5:23). They pleaded with the Israelites to put their trust in God if they were true believers.
What was the test of the town's gate?
The crossing was designed as an act of spiritual submission rather than mere military conquest. The Quran specifies the exact posture required of the advancing believers: they were told to "enter this town and eat freely there as you will," but they had to enter its gate humbly (2:58). God instructed them to utter a specific plea as they crossed—"Relieve us!"—promising that this physical humility and verbal request for pardon would result in the forgiveness of their sins and increased rewards for those who did good (7:161).
Despite the assurance of victory and abundant provision, the Israelites rejected the terms entirely. Breaking from their prophet, they delivered a blunt refusal: "Moses, we will never enter while they are still there, so you and your Lord go in and fight, and we will stay here" (5:24).
Faced with a camp that preferred stagnation to trusting the divine command, Moses separated himself from their rebellion. He prayed to God, clarifying that his authority extended only over himself and his brother, and asked God to judge between them and the disobedient people (5:25). The land they had just refused to enter was instantly withdrawn from their reach. God decreed that the territory would be forbidden to them for forty years, condemning that generation to wander the earth aimlessly (5:26).
