in Allah's cause

9 verses

When the command to fight was ordained, some believers hesitated, asking for just a little more time and fearing men as much as, or even more than, they feared God (4:77). The call to strive in God's cause demands that believers weigh immediate earthly survival against the life to come. The text directly challenges those who feel weighed down to the ground when told to go out and fight, asking if they truly prefer this world over the Hereafter (9:38). God reminds them that the enjoyment found here is remarkably small compared to what follows, and that those willing to trade the life of this world for the life to come must fight in God’s way (4:74).

Why does God ordain fighting?

The command to engage in battle is framed not as a necessity for God's success, but as a deliberate trial. God explicitly states that He could have defeated the disbelievers Himself if He had willed; instead, His purpose in ordaining battle is to test some people by means of others (47:4). The Prophet is told to fight in God’s way, bearing accountability only for himself, while urging the believers onward with the assurance that God may well curb the power of the disbelievers (4:84). Refusing this call carries severe consequences. Those who decline to go out and fight face a severe punishment and the threat of being replaced by others, as their absence cannot harm God in any way (9:39).

How are believers commanded to strive?

Striving in this cause demands a total commitment of both material and physical resources. Believers are instructed to go out regardless of their circumstances—no matter whether they are lightly or heavily armed—and to struggle using both their possessions and their own persons (9:41). On the battlefield, the directives are decisive: believers are told to strike the disbelievers in the neck until they are defeated, and then to firmly bind any captives (47:4). Once the immediate toils of war have ended, these captives can be released either as an act of grace or through ransom (47:4).

What is the reward for suffering and death?

For those who make this trade, the promise is a great reward, granted equally whether the believer is ultimately victorious or killed in battle (4:74). God answers the believers by guaranteeing that the deeds of anyone—whether male or female—will never be lost (3:195). He promises to wipe out the bad deeds of those who emigrated, were driven from their homes, suffered harm for His cause, and fought and were killed, admitting them into Gardens graced with flowing streams (3:195). Even if a person migrates in God’s way and simply dies rather than being killed in combat, God, the Best Provider, guarantees them a generous provision (22:58).

The exact scales of this trade leave no room for loss. Those who fear the battlefield are reminded that the Hereafter is far better for those who are mindful of God, who will not be wronged by as much as the fibre in a date stone (4:77). For those who step forward, God promises that He will not let the deeds of those who are killed for His cause come to nothing (47:4).

3:195 Ali 'Imran

Their Lord has answered them: ‘I will not allow the deeds of any one of you to be lost, whether you are male or female, each is like the other [in rewards]. I will certainly wipe out the bad deeds of those who emigrated and were driven out of their homes, who suffered harm for My cause, who fought and were killed. I will certainly admit them to Gardens graced with flowing streams, as a reward from God: the best reward is with God.’

4:74 An-Nisa

Let those of you who are willing to trade the life of this world for the life to come, fight in God’s way. To anyone who fights in God’s way, whether killed or victorious, We shall give a great reward.

4:77 An-Nisa

[Prophet], do you not see those who were told, ‘Restrain yourselves from fighting, perform the prayer, and pay the prescribed alms’? When fighting was ordained for them, some of them feared men as much as, or even more than, they feared God, saying, ‘Lord, why have You ordained fighting for us? If only You would give us just a little more time.’ Say to them, ‘Little is the enjoyment in this world, the Hereafter is far better for those who are mindful of God: you will not be wronged by as much as the fibre in a date stone.

4:84 An-Nisa

So [Prophet] fight in God’s way. You are accountable only for yourself. Urge the believers on. God may well curb the power of the disbelievers, for He is stronger in might and more terrible in punishment.

9:38 At-Tawbah

Believers, why, when it is said to you, ‘Go and fight in God’s way,’ do you feel weighed down to the ground? Do you prefer this world to the life to come? How small the enjoyment of this world is, compared with the life to come!

9:39 At-Tawbah

If you do not go out and fight, God will punish you severely and put others in your place, but you cannot harm Him in any way: God has power over all things.

9:41 At-Tawbah

So go out, no matter whether you are lightly or heavily armed, and struggle in God’s way with your possessions and your persons: this is better for you, if you only knew.

22:58 Al-Hajj

He will give a generous provision to those who migrated in God’s way and were killed or died. He is the Best Provider.

47:4 Muhammad

When you meet the disbelievers in battle, strike them in the neck, and once they are defeated, bind any captives firmly––later you can release them by grace or by ransom––until the toils of war have ended. That [is the way]. God could have defeated them Himself if He had willed, but His purpose is to test some of you by means of others. He will not let the deeds of those who are killed for His cause come to nothing;
