Faction

When Pharaoh made himself high and mighty in the land, his primary method for spreading corruption was the deliberate fracturing of his population into differing factions (28:4). By splintering the people, he could safely isolate and oppress one specific group, slaughtering their sons while sparing their women. The Arabic term for such a faction, hizb, traditionally implies a collective characterized by harshness or strict cohesion, as noted by Al-Fayruzabadi (Basa'ir dhawi al-tamyiz, 2/457). Far from a neutral demographic descriptor, a faction often forms either as an instrument of political subjugation or as a rigid front united by a shared, aggressive opposition.

How do religious sects form? The fracturing of a religious community rarely stems from an absence of truth. Those given the Scripture only became divided into opposing parties after clear evidence had already been delivered to them (98:4). Rather than unifying upon this clarity, communities split their religion into sects out of mutual disagreement—a dynamic that ultimately earns the evildoers the torment of a grievous day (43:65). This entrenchment creates a closed loop where each distinct party rejoices only in what its own faction possesses (30:32). The reality of divergent paths extends even to the unseen; the jinn acknowledge that they similarly divide into differing tracks, with some remaining righteous while others follow less virtuous ways (72:11).

Why do groups ally against prophets? Historically, factions have bound themselves together to violently suppress divine messengers. From the people of Noah to Thamud, the people of Lot, and the Forest-Dwellers, distinct communities consistently organized into alliances to refute truth using falsehood (38:13, 40:5). Every oppositional community schemed specifically to destroy its messenger, resulting in God enacting a terrible punishment to destroy them instead (40:5). A lone believer in Pharaoh’s court directly warned his people against this pattern, fearing they would suffer the exact same fate as those earlier opposing groups (40:30). Despite the intimidating front presented by these coalitions, their structural foundation is completely brittle; their armed alliances are weak and ultimately destined to be crushed (38:11).

What are the two ultimate allegiances? Beneath the complex political and historical divisions of humanity lies a stark binary. As Al-Wahidi documents from early Arabic linguists, while a faction simply denotes a specific category or group of people, the ultimate, permanent division rests entirely between the side of God and the side of Satan (Al-Tafsir al-Basit, 7/437). Satan's faction is comprised of those he has successfully gained control over, systematically making them forget God. Because of this alignment, they are guaranteed to be the losers (58:19).

In total contrast stands the faction aligned with God. True belief in God and the Last Day rewrites human loyalties so fundamentally that a believer cannot give their allegiance to those who oppose God and His Messenger, even if the opponents are their own fathers, sons, or brothers (58:22). For this group, God personally inscribes faith directly into their hearts and strengthens them with His own spirit. He will let them enter Gardens graced with flowing streams where they will stay, existing in a permanent state where God is well pleased with them, and they with Him—the true side of God, and the only one that will prosper (58:22).
