Though a good reward is promised to all who hold faith, the Quran explicitly denies equality between those who exert themselves and those who remain safely at home. Effort creates a distinct hierarchy in God’s sight. Committing one’s personal safety and possessions to a divine cause elevates a believer to specific, higher ranks of mercy and forgiveness (4:95-96). This struggle is not presented merely as an obligation, but as the defining characteristic of those whose faith has moved past all doubt (49:15).
Are all believers rewarded equally?
While God promises a good recompense to the general body of believers, He draws a sharp line between them and those who actively strive. Those who stay behind, apart from those with physical incapacities, do not stand on the same level as those who commit their wealth and their very persons to God's way. For the strivers, the reward is described as "tremendous"—specifically manifesting as high ranks conferred directly by Him, alongside forgiveness and mercy (4:95-96). The exertion of wealth and self is what proves the truth of their claim to faith; they are identified as the precise ones who have left all hesitation behind (49:15).
What counts as striving in the Quran?
The verses detail this effort in deeply physical and material terms. The command is repeatedly to struggle with "your possessions and your persons" (61:11). The Quran records the exact physical toll this takes, assuring that no discomfort goes ignored. Any thirst, weariness, or hunger suffered in God's cause is immediately recorded as a good deed in the striver's favor. Even taking a step that angers the disbelievers or causing harm to an enemy registers on this divine scale, reinforcing the principle that God never wastes the reward of those who do good (9:120).
Who are the people chosen for this effort?
Taking up this struggle is not framed just as a matter of human willpower, but as a divine favor granted to specific types of people. The Quran warns those who might go back on their faith that God can simply replace them with a new people characterized by mutual love with the Creator. These individuals possess a distinct temperament: they are humble toward other believers but unyielding toward those who reject the truth. Most crucially, they strive in God's way without fearing the reproach or criticism of anyone else, a resilience described as a specific bounty God grants to whomever He wills (5:54).
The instruction to struggle is ultimately framed as something inherently beneficial for the individual, if only they recognized it (61:11). The choice to hold back out of self-preservation means missing out on a divine ledger that tracks the most granular physical realities. Every pang of thirst, every moment of weariness, and every deliberate step that frustrates an opponent is captured in the striver's favor, ensuring that no fraction of their discomfort is ever wasted (9:120).

لَّا يَسْتَوِى ٱلْقَـٰعِدُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ غَيْرُ أُو۟لِى ٱلضَّرَرِ وَٱلْمُجَـٰهِدُونَ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ ۚ فَضَّلَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُجَـٰهِدِينَ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ عَلَى ٱلْقَـٰعِدِينَ دَرَجَةً ۚ وَكُلًّا وَعَدَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ۚ وَفَضَّلَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُجَـٰهِدِينَ عَلَى ٱلْقَـٰعِدِينَ أَجْرًا عَظِيمًا
Those believers who stay at home, apart from those with an incapacity, are not equal to those who commit themselves and their possessions to striving in God’s way. God has raised such people to a rank above those who stay at home- although He has promised all believers a good reward, those who strive are favoured with a tremendous reward above those who stay at home-
دَرَجَـٰتٍ مِّنْهُ وَمَغْفِرَةً وَرَحْمَةً ۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَفُورًا رَّحِيمًا
high ranks conferred by Him, as well as forgiveness, and mercy: God is most forgiving and merciful.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَن يَرْتَدَّ مِنكُمْ عَن دِينِهِۦ فَسَوْفَ يَأْتِى ٱللَّهُ بِقَوْمٍ يُحِبُّهُمْ وَيُحِبُّونَهُۥٓ أَذِلَّةٍ عَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَعِزَّةٍ عَلَى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ يُجَـٰهِدُونَ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا يَخَافُونَ لَوْمَةَ لَآئِمٍ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ فَضْلُ ٱللَّهِ يُؤْتِيهِ مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ وَٰسِعٌ عَلِيمٌ
You who believe, if any of you go back on your faith, God will soon replace you with people He loves and who love Him, people who are humble towards the believers, hard on the disbelievers, and who strive in God’s way without fearing anyone’s reproach. Such is God’s favour. He grants it to whoever He will. God has endless bounty and knowledge.
مَا كَانَ لِأَهْلِ ٱلْمَدِينَةِ وَمَنْ حَوْلَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَعْرَابِ أَن يَتَخَلَّفُوا۟ عَن رَّسُولِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا يَرْغَبُوا۟ بِأَنفُسِهِمْ عَن نَّفْسِهِۦ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ لَا يُصِيبُهُمْ ظَمَأٌ وَلَا نَصَبٌ وَلَا مَخْمَصَةٌ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا يَطَـُٔونَ مَوْطِئًا يَغِيظُ ٱلْكُفَّارَ وَلَا يَنَالُونَ مِنْ عَدُوٍّ نَّيْلًا إِلَّا كُتِبَ لَهُم بِهِۦ عَمَلٌ صَـٰلِحٌ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُضِيعُ أَجْرَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
The people of Medina and their neighbouring desert Arabs should not have held back from following God’s Messenger, nor should they have cared about themselves more than him: if ever they suffer any thirst, weariness, or hunger in God’s cause, take any step that angers the disbelievers, or cause any harm to an enemy, a good deed is recorded in their favour on account of it- God never wastes the reward of those who do good-
إِنَّمَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَرْتَابُوا۟ وَجَـٰهَدُوا۟ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلصَّـٰدِقُونَ
The true believers are the ones who have faith in God and His Messenger and leave all doubt behind, the ones who have struggled with their possessions and their persons in God’s way: they are the ones who are true.
تُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَتُجَـٰهِدُونَ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ بِأَمْوَٰلِكُمْ وَأَنفُسِكُمْ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ
Have faith in God and His Messenger and struggle for His cause with your possessions and your persons––that is better for you, if only you knew-
