Pilgrimage
الحج
24 verses
The Quran establishes the pilgrimage (Al-Hajj) to the Sacred House in Makkah as a direct duty owed to God by anyone with the means to undertake it (3:97). This physical obligation centers around a sanctuary described as a safe place, anchored at the very spot where Abraham stood to pray. The text marks out specific geographical features as rites of God, expressly permitting pilgrims to circulate between the hills of Safa and Marwa (2:158). The timing of these rites is tethered to the physical world, with crescent moons serving to show the appointed times for people to gather (2:189).
What are the restrictions during pilgrimage?
The Quran specifies that the pilgrimage occurs during prescribed months. Classical commentator Nawawi al-Jawi notes (Marah Labid, 1/67) that once a person binds themselves to the pilgrim state during this time, strict behavioral conditions apply. The text forbids indecent speech, misbehavior, and quarrelling (2:197). A major restriction involves hunting; while maritime catch remains permissible, believers are strictly forbidden to kill game on land (5:1). The Quran presents this as a direct trial, warning that God will test pilgrims with game that comes right within reach of their hands and spears (5:94). Believers are commanded not to violate the sanctity of the Sacred Month, the sacrificial offerings, or the garlands that mark them. Furthermore, they are instructed not to let hatred for people who previously barred them from the Sacred Mosque induce them to break the law, but instead to help one another in doing what is right (5:2).
How are interruptions and illness handled?
The text distinguishes between the major pilgrimage and the minor one (Umrah), a distinction Ibn al-Jawzi traces back to early scholars like Ata and Ash-Sha'bi (Zad al-Masir, 2/235). Commenting on the command to complete both for the sake of God (2:196), Al-Baghawi (Tafsir al-Baghawi, 1/218) notes the established consensus that the rites can be performed in three specific modes: Ifrad (isolating the major pilgrimage), Tamattu (taking a break between the two), and Qiran (combining them).
The Quran provides precise compensations for those facing obstacles. If a pilgrim is prevented from finishing the rites, they must send whatever sacrificial offering they can afford, holding off on shaving their heads until the offering reaches its destination. Should illness or a scalp ailment occur, the believer compensates by fasting, feeding the poor, or offering a sacrifice. For those who take a break between the minor and major pilgrimages, an offering is required. If they lack the means, they are instructed to fast for three days during the pilgrimage and seven days upon returning—making ten days in total—provided their household is not near the Sacred Mosque (2:196).
What happens after the rites at Arafat?
Physical movement is paired with constant remembrance. The Quran tells pilgrims to surge down from Arafat alongside the rest of the people, seeking God's forgiveness at the sacred place (2:198–199). Although focused on worship, the text clarifies that it is no offense to seek bounty from their Lord through trade during this time (2:198). Once the central rites are complete, believers are instructed to remember God as much as they remember their own fathers, or even more. The text warns against praying only for good in this world, noting such people will have no share in the Hereafter (2:200). Finally, pilgrims are given the flexibility to leave after two days or to stay longer on the appointed days, provided they remain mindful of God (2:203).
The physical exertion of the pilgrimage—the travel, the specified days, the strict restraint from conflict and hunting—is underpinned by a mandate to prepare oneself internally. While addressing the material needs of the travel, the text shifts the focus from physical luggage to spiritual readiness, declaring that while believers must provide well for themselves, the absolute best provision is to be mindful of God (2:197).

Safa and Marwa are among the rites of God, so for those who make major or minor pilgrimage to the House it is no offence to circulate between the two. Anyone who does good of his own accord will be rewarded, for God rewards good deeds, and knows everything.
They ask you [Prophet] about crescent moons. Say, ‘They show the times appointed for people, and for the pilgrimage.’ Goodness does not consist of entering houses by the back [door]; the truly good person is the one who is mindful of God. So enter your houses by their [main] doors and be mindful of God so that you may prosper.
Complete the pilgrimages, major and minor, for the sake of God. If you are prevented [from doing so], then [send] whatever offering for sacrifice you can afford, and do not shave your headsuntil the offering has reached the place of sacrifice. If any of you is ill, or has an ailment of the scalp, he should compensate by fasting, or feeding the poor, or offering sacrifice. When you are in safety, anyone wishing to take a break between the minor pilgrimage and the major one must make whatever offering he can afford. If he lacks the means, he should fast for three days during the pilgrimage, and seven days on his return, making ten days in all. This applies to those whose household is not near the Sacred Mosque. Always be mindful of God, and be aware that He is stern in His retribution.
The pilgrimage takes place during the prescribed months. There should be no indecent speech, misbehaviour, or quarrelling for anyone undertaking the pilgrimage- whatever good you do, God is well aware of it. Provide well for yourselves: the best provision is to be mindful of God- always be mindful of Me, you who have understanding-
but it is no offence to seek some bounty from your Lord. When you surge down from Arafat remember God at the sacred place. Remember Him: He has guided you. Before that you were astray.
Surge down where the rest of the people do, and ask forgiveness of God: He is most forgiving and merciful.
When you have completed your rites, remember God as much as you remember your own fathers, or even more. There are some who pray, ‘Our Lord, give us good in this world,’ and they will have no share in the Hereafter;
Remember God on the appointed days. If anyone is in a hurry to leave after two days, there is no blame on him, nor is there any blame on anyone who stays on, so long as they are mindful of God. Be mindful of God, and remember that you will be gathered to Him.
there are clear signs in it; it is the place where Abraham stood to pray; whoever enters it is safe. Pilgrimage to the House is a duty owed to God by people who are able to undertake it. Those who reject this [should know that] God has no need of anyone.
You who believe, fulfil your obligations. Livestock animals are lawful as food for you, with the exception of what is about to be announced to you. You are forbidden to kill game while you are on pilgrimage––God commands what He will,
so, you who believe, do not violate the sanctity of God’s rites, the Sacred Month, the offerings, their garlands, nor those going to the Sacred House to seek the bounty and pleasure of their Lord––but when you have completed the rites of pilgrimage you may hunt. Do not let your hatred for the people who barred you from the Sacred Mosque induce you to break the law: help one another to do what is right and good; do not help one another towards sin and hostility. Be mindful of God, for His punishment is severe.
You who believe, God is sure to test you with game within reach of your hands and spears, to find out who fears Him even though they cannot see Him: from now on, anyone who transgresses will have a painful punishment.
You who believe, do not kill game while you are in the state of consecration [for pilgrimage]. If someone does so intentionally the penalty is an offering of a domestic animal brought to the Kaba, equivalent- as judged by two just men among you- to the one he has killed; alternatively, he may atone by feeding the needy or by fasting an equivalent number of days, so that he may taste the full gravity of his deed. God forgives what is past, but if anyone re-offends, God will exact the penalty from him: God is mighty, and capable of exacting the penalty.
It is permitted for you to catch and eat seafood- an enjoyment for you and the traveller- but hunting game is forbidden while you are in the state of consecration [for pilgrimage]. Be mindful of God to whom you will be gathered.
Proclaim the Pilgrimage to all people. They will come to you on foot and on every kind of swift mount, emerging from every deep mountain pass
to attain benefits and celebrate God’s name, on specified days, over the livestock He has provided for them- feed yourselves and the poor and unfortunate-
so let the pilgrims perform their acts of cleansing, fulfil their vows, and circle around the Ancient House.’
All this [is ordained by God]: anyone who honours the sacred ordinances of God will have good rewards from his Lord. Livestock have been made lawful to you, except for what has been explicitly forbidden. Shun the filth of idolatrous beliefs and practices and shun false utterances.
Devote yourselves to God and assign Him no partners, for the person who does so is like someone who has been hurled down from the skies and snatched up by the birds or flung to a distant place by the wind.
All this [is ordained by God]: those who honour God’s rites show the piety of their hearts.
Live-stock are useful to you until the set time. Then their place of sacrifice is near the Ancient House:
We appointed acts of devotion for every community, for them to celebrate God’s name over the livestock He provided for them: your God is One, so devote yourselves to Him. [Prophet], give good news to the humble
whose hearts fill with awe whenever God is mentioned, who endure whatever happens to them with patience, who keep up the prayer, who give to others out of Our provision to them.
We have made camels part of God’s sacred rites for you. There is much good in them for you, so invoke God’s name over them as they are lined up for sacrifice, then, when they have fallen down dead, feed yourselves and those who do not ask, as well as those who do. We have subjected them to you in this way so that you may be thankful.
