Instinct
الفطرة
8 verses
Human beings arrive in the world carrying an innate recognition of their Maker. The Quran identifies this pure faith not as a learned habit, but as "the natural disposition God instilled in mankind" (30:30). Classical commentators view this instinct—the fitrah—as the fundamental constitution of the human soul. As al-Tha'alibi notes (Tafsir al-Tha'alibi, 4/312), it is the original creation and form placed within the self. To stand firm in devotion, the Quran states, is simply to align with this unalterable blueprint of human nature.
How does the Quran view the human heart?
Contrary to ideas of inherent spiritual blindness, the text positions the human heart as naturally receptive to faith. Al-Zamakhshari argues against the notion that hearts are created sealed or covered; rather, they are fashioned upon fitrah, fully equipped with the capacity to accept the truth (Tafsir al-Zamakhshari, 1/164). This original disposition is so foundational that al-Wahidi defines it directly as the physical and spiritual mold upon which humanity was shaped (Al-Tafsir al-Basit, 18/56). Because "there is no altering God’s creation" (30:30), this inner compass remains permanently present in every person.
Why do the prophets appeal to origin?
Throughout the Quranic narratives, messengers do not introduce God as an alien concept. They act to reawaken a dormant instinct, repeatedly linking the obligation of worship directly to the act of creation. When asked for his motives, a prophet clarifies that he seeks no earthly reward, asking his people instead, "Why do you not use your reason?" regarding his dedication to the One who created him (11:51). Another voice questions his community's logic: "Why should I not worship the One who created me? It is to Him that you will be returned" (36:22). Prophet Ibrahim grounds his rejection of idolatry in this primal reality, declaring that his worship and his trust in future guidance belong solely to the One who originated him (43:27).
What happens when instinct confronts denial?
When skeptics dismiss the possibility of resurrection, the Quran leverages the instinctual logic of origin. Confronted by those who mockingly ask who could possibly bring them back from dust, stone, or "any other substance you think hard to bring to life," the reply bypasses complex philosophy: "The One who created you the first time" (17:51). When this inner truth is fully realized, it overrides even the greatest earthly fears. The magicians who challenged Pharaoh, upon recognizing God's reality, refused to favor his authority over the clear signs they witnessed. Anchoring themselves to their fitrah, they declared they would never prefer him to "Him who created us," dismissing his threats because his power could only decide matters of the present life (20:72).
The culmination of this instinctive faith is a deliberate, conscious orientation of the self. It moves from an inward intuition to an outward declaration, mirroring the stance of one who turns their face as a true believer toward the Originator of the heavens and the earth, entirely separate from polytheism (6:79). Reconnecting with this primordial nature leaves a person with a singular, unyielding testimony: "Listen! Your true Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, He who created them, and I am a witness to this" (21:56).
