To grasp the firmest, unbreakable hand-hold, a person must first actively reject false gods before establishing belief in the Creator (2:256). The Quran presents this dual action not as a localized dispute, but as the central, defining mandate of human history. A messenger was sent to every single community with the exact same directive: worship God and completely shun false deities (16:36). Because true guidance has been made entirely distinct from error through this message, the Quran declares there is no compulsion in religion (2:256). The choice is laid bare, separating those whom God guides from those over whom misguidance takes hold (16:36).

How do false deities affect their followers? While statues of stone or wood possess no inherent ability, the Quran describes the devastating spiritual gravity they exert over the societies that revere them. False gods function as active allies of disbelief, systematically pulling people away from the light and dragging them down into the depths of darkness (2:257). This reverence often evolved gradually. As Muhammad Draz explains (Madkhal ila al-Quran, 79), stone altars that were initially used to predict hidden matters or symbolize unseen deities eventually absorbed the very sanctity and worship owed exclusively to God. The Quran links these physical objects to broader evil powers and the inherently weak strategies of Satan, warning that those who reject faith are fighting for an unjust cause on behalf of these false entities (4:76).

Who falls into this type of worship? The historical resistance to abandoning these deities was immense. When the Prophet called his people to worship one God, they were fiercely attached to an expansive pantheon, possessing 360 distinct idols, as noted by Al-Wahidi (Al-Tafsir al-Basit, 19/ 152). To demonstrate their ultimate helplessness, classical commentary observes that when worshippers would anoint their idols with various perfumes, a bird or fly might snatch away the offerings, and the gods were entirely unable to retrieve them (Mawsu'at al-Tafsir al-Ma'thur, 15/ 226). In another vivid demonstration recorded by Abu Bakr al-Jaza'iri (Aysar al-Tafasir, 3/ 423), when idolaters left their city for a festival, their false gods were smashed into scattered pieces with an axe, which was then left hanging upon the largest of the claimed deities for the worshippers to find upon their return.

Despite such clear proofs of their weakness, the Quran expresses astonishment at those who were previously given a share of the Scripture, yet still fell into believing in idols and evil powers (4:51). These individuals went so far as to claim that outright disbelievers were more rightly guided than the believers. The Quran firmly categorizes those who worship idols among the worst in rank, stating they have incurred God's anger, been distanced from Him, and strayed the furthest from the right path (5:60).

What is the final outcome of this choice? The text sharply contrasts the ultimate destinations of those who cling to idols and those who reject them. Those who take false gods as their allies become inhabitants of the Fire, remaining there permanently as a consequence of their descent into darkness (2:257). For evidence of this reality, the text issues a direct command to travel through the earth and observe the physical ruins and fate of past communities that denied the truth (16:36). On the other hand, the Quran commands the Prophet to deliver good news directly to the servants who successfully shun the worship of false gods and turn entirely to God (39:17). Those who reject false gods and believe in God have grasped the firmest hand-hold, one that will never break (2:256).
