When a powerful ruler claimed the ability to give life and death, Abraham dismantled his authority by pointing to the horizon: since God brings the sun from the east, the disbelieving tyrant should bring it from the west (2:258). Dumbfounded, the ruler had no reply. The eastern direction functions in these verses not merely as a compass point, but as a demonstration of absolute divine ownership. When foolish people questioned the sudden change in the Muslim prayer direction, the answer was immediate and rooted in this same sovereignty: East and West belong entirely to God, who guides whom He wills to the right way (2:142).
Does facing east make a person righteous?
The text systematically deconstructs the idea that physical orientation alone constitutes piety. It asserts that "wherever you turn, there is His Face" (2:115), establishing the Creator as all-pervading and all-knowing rather than confined to a specific coordinate. This principle culminates in a sweeping definition of righteousness that explicitly rejects directional obsession. Goodness, the text clarifies, does not consist in turning one's face toward the East or West (2:177). Instead, genuine piety requires internal conviction in God, the Last Day, the angels, the Scripture, and the prophets. This belief must materialize into tangible social and personal action: giving away cherished wealth to relatives, orphans, the needy, travelers, and beggars. True goodness requires liberating those in bondage, keeping up the prayer, paying the prescribed alms, honoring pledges, and remaining steadfast through misfortune, adversity, and times of danger (2:177).
The domain of every sunrise
Prophets repeatedly invoke the East to assert God's dominion over the earth. Moses introduces his Creator to an incredulous Pharaoh as the "Lord of the East and West and everything between them," challenging the Egyptian ruler to finally use his reason (26:28). This authority governs the celestial mechanics of "every sunrise" (37:5). The physical dawn also marks critical moments of conflict and liberation. It was exactly at sunrise that Pharaoh and his people pursued the fleeing Israelites (26:60), moving blindly toward their own destruction. Following that deliverance, God fulfilled His good promise to the oppressed Children of Israel because of their patience, allowing them to inherit both the east and the west of the blessed land while utterly destroying what Pharaoh had built (7:137). In a quieter but equally momentous event, Mary physically withdrew from her family to a secluded place specifically situated to the east (19:16).
A tree neither east nor west
The most striking use of directional language appears in the Parable of Light, which describes God’s illumination as a lamp inside a glass resembling a glittering star. This lamp is fueled by a blessed olive tree that is "neither east nor west" (24:35). Classical scholars emphasize that this phrasing indicates perfect environmental balance. As noted in Mawsu'at al-Tafsir al-Ma'thur (15/645), this tree is not restricted to receiving only morning light or only evening light; it takes in the sun uniformly from both sides. Because it sits centrally in the Levant rather than at the extremes of east or west, it yields oil of unparalleled purity—oil so clear it almost emits light before any fire touches it, as Bayan al-Haqq al-Naysaburi explains (Ijaz al-Bayan, 2/602).
Human disputes over orientation shrink when measured against the Creator's vast authority over the horizons. The daily rising of the sun stands as a continuous proof of the Lord of the heavens, earth, and everything between them (37:5). God remains the all-knowing Light of the heavens and the earth, offering guidance that transcends geographic coordinates, drawing comparisons for people to guide whoever He will to His Light (24:35).

وَلِلَّهِ ٱلْمَشْرِقُ وَٱلْمَغْرِبُ ۚ فَأَيْنَمَا تُوَلُّوا۟ فَثَمَّ وَجْهُ ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ وَٰسِعٌ عَلِيمٌ
The East and the West belong to God: wherever you turn, there is His Face. God is all pervading and all knowing.
۞ سَيَقُولُ ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ مِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَا وَلَّىٰهُمْ عَن قِبْلَتِهِمُ ٱلَّتِى كَانُوا۟ عَلَيْهَا ۚ قُل لِّلَّهِ ٱلْمَشْرِقُ وَٱلْمَغْرِبُ ۚ يَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ
The foolish people will say, ‘What has turned them away from the prayer direction they used to face?’ Say, ‘East and West belong to God. He guides whoever He will to the right way.’
۞ لَّيْسَ ٱلْبِرَّ أَن تُوَلُّوا۟ وُجُوهَكُمْ قِبَلَ ٱلْمَشْرِقِ وَٱلْمَغْرِبِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلْبِرَّ مَنْ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ وَٱلْكِتَـٰبِ وَٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ وَءَاتَى ٱلْمَالَ عَلَىٰ حُبِّهِۦ ذَوِى ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ وَٱلْيَتَـٰمَىٰ وَٱلْمَسَـٰكِينَ وَٱبْنَ ٱلسَّبِيلِ وَٱلسَّآئِلِينَ وَفِى ٱلرِّقَابِ وَأَقَامَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَى ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَٱلْمُوفُونَ بِعَهْدِهِمْ إِذَا عَـٰهَدُوا۟ ۖ وَٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ فِى ٱلْبَأْسَآءِ وَٱلضَّرَّآءِ وَحِينَ ٱلْبَأْسِ ۗ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ صَدَقُوا۟ ۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُتَّقُونَ
Goodness does not consist in turning your face towards East or West. The truly good are those who believe in God and the Last Day, in the angels, the Scripture, and the prophets; who give away some of their wealth, however much they cherish it, to their relatives, to orphans, the needy, travellers and beggars, and to liberate those in bondage; those who keep up the prayer and pay the prescribed alms; who keep pledges whenever they make them; who are steadfast in misfortune, adversity, and times of danger. These are the ones who are true, and it is they who are aware of God.
أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِى حَآجَّ إِبْرَٰهِـۧمَ فِى رَبِّهِۦٓ أَنْ ءَاتَىٰهُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُلْكَ إِذْ قَالَ إِبْرَٰهِـۧمُ رَبِّىَ ٱلَّذِى يُحْىِۦ وَيُمِيتُ قَالَ أَنَا۠ أُحْىِۦ وَأُمِيتُ ۖ قَالَ إِبْرَٰهِـۧمُ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَأْتِى بِٱلشَّمْسِ مِنَ ٱلْمَشْرِقِ فَأْتِ بِهَا مِنَ ٱلْمَغْرِبِ فَبُهِتَ ٱلَّذِى كَفَرَ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
[Prophet], have you not thought about the man who disputed with Abraham about his Lord, because God had given him power to rule? When Abraham said, ‘It is my Lord who gives life and death,’ he said, ‘I too give life and death.’ So Abraham said, ‘God brings the sun from the east; so bring it from the west.’ The disbeliever was dumbfounded: God does not guide those who do evil.
وَأَوْرَثْنَا ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَانُوا۟ يُسْتَضْعَفُونَ مَشَـٰرِقَ ٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَغَـٰرِبَهَا ٱلَّتِى بَـٰرَكْنَا فِيهَا ۖ وَتَمَّتْ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ عَلَىٰ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ بِمَا صَبَرُوا۟ ۖ وَدَمَّرْنَا مَا كَانَ يَصْنَعُ فِرْعَوْنُ وَقَوْمُهُۥ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْرِشُونَ
and We made those who had been oppressed succeed to both the east and the west of the land that We had blessed. Your Lord’s good promise to the Children of Israel was fulfilled, because of their patience, and We destroyed what Pharaoh and his people were making and what they were building.
وَٱذْكُرْ فِى ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ مَرْيَمَ إِذِ ٱنتَبَذَتْ مِنْ أَهْلِهَا مَكَانًا شَرْقِيًّا
Mention in the Quran the story of Mary. She withdrew from her family to a place to the east
۞ ٱللَّهُ نُورُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ مَثَلُ نُورِهِۦ كَمِشْكَوٰةٍ فِيهَا مِصْبَاحٌ ۖ ٱلْمِصْبَاحُ فِى زُجَاجَةٍ ۖ ٱلزُّجَاجَةُ كَأَنَّهَا كَوْكَبٌ دُرِّىٌّ يُوقَدُ مِن شَجَرَةٍ مُّبَـٰرَكَةٍ زَيْتُونَةٍ لَّا شَرْقِيَّةٍ وَلَا غَرْبِيَّةٍ يَكَادُ زَيْتُهَا يُضِىٓءُ وَلَوْ لَمْ تَمْسَسْهُ نَارٌ ۚ نُّورٌ عَلَىٰ نُورٍ ۗ يَهْدِى ٱللَّهُ لِنُورِهِۦ مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَيَضْرِبُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْأَمْثَـٰلَ لِلنَّاسِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌ
God is the Light of the heavens and earth. His Light is like this: there is a niche, and in it a lamp, the lamp inside a glass, a glass like a glittering star, fuelled from a blessed olive tree from neither east nor west, whose oil almost gives light even when no fire touches it- light upon light- God guides whoever He will to his Light; God draws such comparisons for people; God has full knowledge of everything-
قَالَ رَبُّ ٱلْمَشْرِقِ وَٱلْمَغْرِبِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَآ ۖ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ
Moses continued, ‘Lord of the East and West and everything between them. If you would only use your reason!’
فَأَتْبَعُوهُم مُّشْرِقِينَ
Pharaoh and his people pursued them at sunrise,
رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا وَرَبُّ ٱلْمَشَـٰرِقِ
Lord of the heavens and earth and everything between them, Lord of every sunrise.
وَمَن يَعْشُ عَن ذِكْرِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ نُقَيِّضْ لَهُۥ شَيْطَـٰنًا فَهُوَ لَهُۥ قَرِينٌ
We assign an evil one as a comrade for whoever turns away from the revelations of the Lord of Mercy:
وَإِنَّهُمْ لَيَصُدُّونَهُمْ عَنِ ٱلسَّبِيلِ وَيَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّهُم مُّهْتَدُونَ
evil ones bar people from the right path, even though they may think they are well guided.
حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا جَآءَنَا قَالَ يَـٰلَيْتَ بَيْنِى وَبَيْنَكَ بُعْدَ ٱلْمَشْرِقَيْنِ فَبِئْسَ ٱلْقَرِينُ
When such a person comes to Us, he will say [to his comrade], ‘If only you had been as far away from me as east is from west. What an evil comrade!’
رَبُّ ٱلْمَشْرِقَيْنِ وَرَبُّ ٱلْمَغْرِبَيْنِ
He is Lord of the two risings and Lord of the two settings.
فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْمَشَـٰرِقِ وَٱلْمَغَـٰرِبِ إِنَّا لَقَـٰدِرُونَ
and, by the Lord of every sunrise and sunset, We have the power
رَّبُّ ٱلْمَشْرِقِ وَٱلْمَغْرِبِ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَٱتَّخِذْهُ وَكِيلًا
He is Lord of the east and west, there is no god but Him, so take Him as your Protector,
