Daughters
البنات
14 verses
When pre-Islamic Arabian society treated female children as a burden, often burying them alive to avoid poverty, the Quran addressed the status of daughters across fourteen specific verses. The text confronts a glaring pagan hypocrisy: assigning female offspring to the Creator while coveting male heirs for themselves. Beyond dismantling this theological error, the verses firmly establish daughters within the boundaries of marital law, outline protective commands for their public presence, and highlight their roles in the histories of former prophets.
Why does the Quran condemn attributing daughters to God?
The Quran repeatedly challenges the polytheists of Mecca for their contradictory beliefs regarding offspring. Without any true knowledge, they attributed sons and daughters to God, even making jinn partners with Him (6:100). The specific absurdity of their claim was rooted in their own social prejudices: they assigned to God the very daughters they despised, while selfishly claiming for themselves the sons they desired (16:57, 37:149). The questioning is sharp and direct: "Did He truly choose daughters in preference to sons?" (37:153), and "Has He taken daughters for Himself and favoured you with sons?" (43:16). As Abu Bakr al-Jaza'iri notes (Aysar al-Tafasir, 3/129), this pagan judgment was a twofold crime: it brazenly ascribed daughters to God while simultaneously humiliating or burying their own female children out of cultural disdain. This practice of infanticide was driven by a fear of poverty, stemming from the belief that daughters were incapable of earning wealth, an injustice the revelation systematically dismantled, as explained by Abu Hafs al-Nasafi (Al-Taysir fi al-Tafsir, 9/402).
How do daughters appear in the narratives of the Prophets?
The Quranic accounts of ancient communities frequently involve the daughters of righteous men, positioning them as lawful foundations for society. When the people of Lot came rushing toward his home to commit foul deeds with his guests, he stood between the mob and his visitors. Offering a lawful alternative through marriage, he said, "My people, here are my daughters. They are more wholesome for you, so have some fear of God and do not disgrace me with my guests" (11:78). He repeated this desperate plea to the corrupted town, saying, "My daughters are here, if you must" (15:71). His people starkly rejected the proposal, stating they had no right to his daughters and fully knew what they actually wanted (11:79). In a contrasting, peaceful setting in Midian, a father recognized the character of Moses and proposed an honorable arrangement. He offered to marry Moses to one of his daughters on the condition that he serve him for eight years—or ten by his own free will—assuring Moses that he was a fair man and did not intend to make things difficult (28:27).
What are the laws protecting daughters?
Specific boundaries regarding daughters structure Islamic family law and social interaction. The Quran strictly forbids a man from marrying his own daughters, his stepdaughters in his care born of women with whom he has consummated marriage, and the daughters of his brothers and sisters (4:23). When defining lawful marriages for the Prophet Muhammad, the text specifies the daughters of his paternal and maternal uncles and aunts who migrated with him (33:50). Finally, daughters are explicitly named in the directives for public modesty. The Prophet was commanded to tell his wives, his daughters, and all women believers to make their outer garments hang low over themselves so they would be recognized as dignified believers and not insulted, shielded by God's forgiveness and mercy (33:59).

You are forbidden to take as wives your mothers, daughters, sisters, paternal and maternal aunts, the daughters of brothers and daughters of sisters, your milk-mothers and milk-sisters, your wives’ mothers, the stepdaughters in your care- those born of women with whom you have consummated marriage, if you have not consummated the marriage, then you will not be blamed- wives of your begotten sons, two sisters simultaneously- with the exception of what is past: God is most forgiving and merciful-

Also any believing woman who has offered herself to the Prophet and whom the Prophet wishes to wed- this is only for you [Prophet] and not the rest of the believers: We know exactly what We have made obligatory for them concerning their wives and slave-girls- so you should not be blamed: God is most forgiving, most merciful.
