Cowardice

The urge to sprint toward a cave or find a hole to crawl into when called to struggle stems from a fractured belief in who controls life and death. When a mobilization occurs, individuals harboring cowardice immediately ask for exemptions, claiming they want to stay home to avoid trouble (9:49). The verses detailing this behavior map how physical dread on the battlefield connects directly to a failure of faith in divine decree.

Where Does the Urge to Flee Originate?

Cowardice manifests as a calculation of personal safety completely separated from God's will. After a raid or a difficult journey, disbelievers and those who emulate them look at the casualties and claim that if the dead had only stayed home, they would not have died or been killed (3:156). God identifies this exact thought as a source of anguish in their hearts, stating clearly that He alone gives life and death, and sees everything people do.

In practice, this mindset creates individuals who deliberately lag behind the community. If the group suffers a calamity, the cowardly person feels relieved at his own absence, remarking that God has been gracious to him because he was not present (4:72). Yet if the believers return favored by God with success, he laments not being there to profit, treating the community as an economic venture to exploit rather than a bond of affection (4:73).

The Physical Panic of the Coward

The terror of confronting danger strips away social pretenses. While cowards may swear by God that they belong to the community of believers, their choices under pressure prove they do not (9:56). The Quran illustrates this fear with raw physical urgency: if they could find a place of refuge, a cave, or even somewhere tight to crawl into, they would run there with great haste to escape the call to action (9:57). As Ibn Ashour notes (al-Tahrir wa'l-Tanwir, 2/478), the Quran's imagery renders the state of those gripped by cowardice in battle uniquely visible and dreadful. True conviction functions as the exact opposite force; those who firmly believe in God and the Last Day do not ask for exemptions from struggling with their possessions and their persons (9:44).

The Command on the Battlefield

When the physical clash arrives, the ruling leaves no room for hesitation. Believers meeting an enemy force in battle are commanded never to turn their backs on them (8:15). Fleeing the lines—unless executing a tactical maneuver to fight elsewhere or shifting to join another fighting group—draws the direct wrath of God (8:16). Some attempt to preempt this severe test entirely by pleading with the leadership, "Give me permission to stay at home: do not trouble me" (9:49).

The attempt to preserve one's life through desertion merely guarantees a worse destruction. Those who ask to be excused to avoid the trouble of conflict are already engulfed in the very ruin they sought to evade. Retreating from the advancing enemy lines secures nothing but divine anger, and Hell will be their home, a wretched destination (8:16).
