When questioned by God about what he held in his right hand, Moses described an ordinary herder’s tool. "It is my staff," he said. "I lean on it; restrain my sheep with it; I also have other uses for it" (20:18). Explaining the fundamental nature of such an implement, the grammarian al-Zajjaj (Ma'ani al-Quran, 4/247) points out that a cane is sometimes called a minsa'ah because it is used precisely to drive things forward or hold things back. Yet classical exegetes note that this particular object possessed a unique origin. Ibn Jarir al-Tabari (Jami al-bayan, 18/233) records a tradition that an angel in the form of a man had originally deposited the staff in Madyan, where a young woman later handed it to Moses. Another tradition preserved by Muqatil (Tafsir Muqatil, 3/25) identifies the staff by the name Naf'ah, stating that the angel Jibril delivered it to Moses at night as he was traveling to Madyan. In the text of the Quran, this simple length of wood becomes the physical instrument for the most dramatic alterations of nature.
How did the staff defeat the magicians?
The transformation of the staff served as the central proof of Moses’s prophethood. The first time God commanded Moses to throw the cane down, it moved so rapidly like a snake that Moses fled in terror and refused to return. God then called him to draw near and reassured him that he was safe (28:31). When later standing before his opponents, Moses threw his staff down, and it instantly became a massive, unmistakable serpent for everyone to see (7:107, 26:32). The magicians countered by casting their own tools, creating elaborate illusions. However, God inspired Moses to throw his staff, and it rapidly swallowed up their trickery (26:45, 7:117). As Abu Bakr al-Jaza'iri notes (Aysar al-Tafasir, 3/361), witnessing the staff literally consume their fabricated ropes and sticks proved to the magicians that they were not looking at superior sorcery, but a genuine heavenly miracle.
How did the staff provide water in the desert?
When the Israelites wandered the desert and faced severe thirst, Moses prayed for water for his people. Rather than sending rain clouds, God linked His provision to the physical strike of the cane. He instructed Moses to strike the desert rock with his staff. Upon the blow, twelve separate springs gushed out of the dry stone, matching the number of the Israelite communities. Because God had distinctly divided them into twelve tribes, each group knew its exact drinking place without conflict, and they were instructed to eat and drink the sustenance God provided (2:60, 7:160).
Yet the staff's most dramatic intervention occurred during the Israelites' escape from Egypt. Standing before impassable waters, God commanded Moses to take direct physical action with the very wood he once used to lean against: "Strike the sea with your staff." Upon impact, the sea immediately parted, with each side tearing open and rising up to stand firmly like a mighty mountain (26:63).

۞ وَإِذِ ٱسْتَسْقَىٰ مُوسَىٰ لِقَوْمِهِۦ فَقُلْنَا ٱضْرِب بِّعَصَاكَ ٱلْحَجَرَ ۖ فَٱنفَجَرَتْ مِنْهُ ٱثْنَتَا عَشْرَةَ عَيْنًا ۖ قَدْ عَلِمَ كُلُّ أُنَاسٍ مَّشْرَبَهُمْ ۖ كُلُوا۟ وَٱشْرَبُوا۟ مِن رِّزْقِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا تَعْثَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مُفْسِدِينَ
Remember when Moses prayed for water for his people and We said to him, ‘Strike the rock with your staff.’ Twelve springs gushed out, and each group knew its drinking place. ‘Eat and drink the sustenance God has provided and do not cause corruption in the land.’
أَيَوَدُّ أَحَدُكُمْ أَن تَكُونَ لَهُۥ جَنَّةٌ مِّن نَّخِيلٍ وَأَعْنَابٍ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ لَهُۥ فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ وَأَصَابَهُ ٱلْكِبَرُ وَلَهُۥ ذُرِّيَّةٌ ضُعَفَآءُ فَأَصَابَهَآ إِعْصَارٌ فِيهِ نَارٌ فَٱحْتَرَقَتْ ۗ كَذَٰلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمُ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَفَكَّرُونَ
Would any of you like to have a garden of palm trees and vines, graced with flowing streams and all kinds of produce, which, when you are afflicted with old age and feeble offspring, is struck by a fiery whirlwind and burnt down? In this way God makes His messages clear to you, so that you may reflect on them.
فَأَلْقَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِىَ ثُعْبَانٌ مُّبِينٌ
So Moses threw his staff and- lo and behold!- it was a snake, clear to all,
۞ وَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنْ أَلْقِ عَصَاكَ ۖ فَإِذَا هِىَ تَلْقَفُ مَا يَأْفِكُونَ
Then We inspired Moses, ‘Throw your staff,’ and- lo and behold!––it devoured their fakery.
وَقَطَّعْنَـٰهُمُ ٱثْنَتَىْ عَشْرَةَ أَسْبَاطًا أُمَمًا ۚ وَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ إِذِ ٱسْتَسْقَىٰهُ قَوْمُهُۥٓ أَنِ ٱضْرِب بِّعَصَاكَ ٱلْحَجَرَ ۖ فَٱنۢبَجَسَتْ مِنْهُ ٱثْنَتَا عَشْرَةَ عَيْنًا ۖ قَدْ عَلِمَ كُلُّ أُنَاسٍ مَّشْرَبَهُمْ ۚ وَظَلَّلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْغَمَـٰمَ وَأَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْمَنَّ وَٱلسَّلْوَىٰ ۖ كُلُوا۟ مِن طَيِّبَـٰتِ مَا رَزَقْنَـٰكُمْ ۚ وَمَا ظَلَمُونَا وَلَـٰكِن كَانُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ
We divided them into twelve tribes [as distinct] communities, and, when his people asked him for water, inspired Moses to strike the rock with his staff [so that] twelve springs gushed out. Each tribe knew its own drinking place; We gave them the shade of clouds and sent down to them manna and quails [saying], ‘Eat the good things We have provided for you.’ They did not wrong Us; it was themselves they wronged.
رَبِّ إِنَّهُنَّ أَضْلَلْنَ كَثِيرًا مِّنَ ٱلنَّاسِ ۖ فَمَن تَبِعَنِى فَإِنَّهُۥ مِنِّى ۖ وَمَنْ عَصَانِى فَإِنَّكَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
Lord, the [idols] have led many people astray! Anyone who follows me is with me, but as for anyone who disobeys me- You are surely forgiving and merciful.
قَالَ هِىَ عَصَاىَ أَتَوَكَّؤُا۟ عَلَيْهَا وَأَهُشُّ بِهَا عَلَىٰ غَنَمِى وَلِىَ فِيهَا مَـَٔارِبُ أُخْرَىٰ
‘It is my staff,’ he said, ‘I lean on it; restrain my sheep with it; I also have other uses for it.’
فَأَلْقَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِىَ ثُعْبَانٌ مُّبِينٌ
So Moses threw down his staff and- lo and behold!- it became a snake for everyone to see.
فَأَلْقَىٰ مُوسَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِىَ تَلْقَفُ مَا يَأْفِكُونَ
But Moses threw his staff and- lo and behold!- it swallowed up their trickery
فَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنِ ٱضْرِب بِّعَصَاكَ ٱلْبَحْرَ ۖ فَٱنفَلَقَ فَكَانَ كُلُّ فِرْقٍ كَٱلطَّوْدِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
and We revealed to Moses: ‘Strike the sea with your staff.’ It parted- each side like a mighty mountain-
وَأَنْ أَلْقِ عَصَاكَ ۖ فَلَمَّا رَءَاهَا تَهْتَزُّ كَأَنَّهَا جَآنٌّ وَلَّىٰ مُدْبِرًا وَلَمْ يُعَقِّبْ ۚ يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ أَقْبِلْ وَلَا تَخَفْ ۖ إِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْـَٔامِنِينَ
Throw down your staff.’ When he saw his staff moving like a snake, he fled in fear and would not return. Again [he was called]: ‘Moses! Draw near! Do not be afraid, for you are one of those who are safe.
