The sudden, overwhelming sound known as the blast (as-sayha) functions as both the historical instrument of ruin for ancient civilizations and the promised mechanism for the Final Hour. It is never depicted as a drawn-out siege or a gradual collapse. Instead, whether striking nations secure in their fortresses or interrupting ordinary daily conversations, it arrives as a single, inescapable event that instantly extinguishes life.

Which historical nations were destroyed by the blast? The text repeatedly details how ancient wrongdoers were overtaken by this sound. In the story of Shuayb, God saved the prophet and his fellow believers out of mercy, while a mighty blast struck the wrongdoers, leaving them dead in their homes by morning (11:94). A similar fate met other evildoers who were struck down and left lifeless in their dwellings (11:67). Even those who carved out elaborate homes in the mountains, believing they could live in absolute security, found their defenses useless; the blast overwhelmed them early in the morning (15:82–83) and at sunrise (15:73). The force of the punishment was total, justly sweeping the evildoers away like scum (23:41).

Classical scholars identify specific communities tied to these verses. As Al-Wahidi notes (Al-Tafsir al-Basit, 17/525), Ibn Abbas interpreted the groups seized by the blast as the peoples of Ad, Thamud, and Madyan. Because other passages describe some of these same nations being destroyed by a severe tremor, Fakhr al-Din al-Razi clarifies that there is no contradiction in the text. He explains that the blast itself was the direct cause of the violent quake that ultimately leveled their cities (Mafatih al-Ghayb, 25/55).

Why did God use different punishments? The blast was one of several distinct methods of divine retribution, carefully meted out according to the specific transgressions of a people. God punished each group for their sins, but the means varied: some were struck with a violent storm, others were swallowed by the earth, some were drowned, and others were overcome by the sudden blast (29:40). In every instance, the record emphasizes strict divine justice, clarifying that it was not God who wronged these vanished civilizations, but rather they who wronged themselves (29:40).

How does the blast connect to the Resurrection? Beyond historical accounts, the blast serves as the trigger for the end of the world and the gathering of humanity. Disbelievers are described as waiting for a single blast that cannot be postponed once it is decreed (38:15). It will not arrive accompanied by a long, anticipated cosmic warning. Instead, people will not even have time to prepare; the blast will overtake them abruptly while they are still arguing with each other in their daily affairs (36:49).

The transition from death to resurrection is equally instantaneous. A singular sound brings the defiant down lifeless (36:29), followed by a single blast where all of humanity is brought directly before God to face judgment (36:53). For those who dismissed the warnings, there will be no final debate or negotiation—just one blast, and they will look up, entirely exposed (37:19).

11:67 هود

وَأَخَذَ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ فَأَصْبَحُوا۟ فِى دِيَـٰرِهِمْ جَـٰثِمِينَ

The blast struck the evildoers and they lay dead in their homes,

11:94 هود

وَلَمَّا جَآءَ أَمْرُنَا نَجَّيْنَا شُعَيْبًا وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَعَهُۥ بِرَحْمَةٍ مِّنَّا وَأَخَذَتِ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ فَأَصْبَحُوا۟ فِى دِيَـٰرِهِمْ جَـٰثِمِينَ

When what We had ordained came about, in Our mercy We saved Shuayb and his fellow believers, but a mighty blast struck the wrongdoers. By morning they lay dead in their homes,

15:73 الحجر

فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ مُشْرِقِينَ

and the blast overtook them at sunrise:

15:82 الحجر

وَكَانُوا۟ يَنْحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا ءَامِنِينَ

They carved out dwellings in the mountains, and lived in security-

15:83 الحجر

فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ مُصْبِحِينَ

the blast overwhelmed them early in the morning.

23:41 المؤمنون

فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ بِٱلْحَقِّ فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْ غُثَآءً ۚ فَبُعْدًا لِّلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

The blast justly struck them and We swept them away like scum. Away with the evildoers!

29:40 العنكبوت

فَكُلًّا أَخَذْنَا بِذَنۢبِهِۦ ۖ فَمِنْهُم مَّنْ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِ حَاصِبًا وَمِنْهُم مَّنْ أَخَذَتْهُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ وَمِنْهُم مَّنْ خَسَفْنَا بِهِ ٱلْأَرْضَ وَمِنْهُم مَّنْ أَغْرَقْنَا ۚ وَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِيَظْلِمَهُمْ وَلَـٰكِن كَانُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ

and We punished each one of them for their sins: some We struck with a violent storm; some were overcome by a sudden blast; some We made the earth swallow; and some We drowned. It was not God who wronged them; they wronged themselves.

36:29 يس

إِن كَانَتْ إِلَّا صَيْحَةً وَٰحِدَةً فَإِذَا هُمْ خَـٰمِدُونَ

there was just one blast, and they fell down lifeless.

36:49 يس

مَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا صَيْحَةً وَٰحِدَةً تَأْخُذُهُمْ وَهُمْ يَخِصِّمُونَ

But all they are waiting for is a single blast that will overtake them while they are still arguing with each other.

36:53 يس

إِن كَانَتْ إِلَّا صَيْحَةً وَٰحِدَةً فَإِذَا هُمْ جَمِيعٌ لَّدَيْنَا مُحْضَرُونَ

It was just one single blast and then- lo and behold!- they were all brought before Us.

37:19 الصافات

فَإِنَّمَا هِىَ زَجْرَةٌ وَٰحِدَةٌ فَإِذَا هُمْ يَنظُرُونَ

Just one blast and––lo and behold!––they will look

38:15 ص

وَمَا يَنظُرُ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ إِلَّا صَيْحَةً وَٰحِدَةً مَّا لَهَا مِن فَوَاقٍ

all the disbelievers here are waiting for is a single blast that cannot be postponed.

50:42 ق

يَوْمَ يَسْمَعُونَ ٱلصَّيْحَةَ بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ يَوْمُ ٱلْخُرُوجِ

They will come out [from their graves] on that Day, the Day when they hear the mighty blast in reality.

51:44 الذاريات

فَعَتَوْا۟ عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّهِمْ فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّـٰعِقَةُ وَهُمْ يَنظُرُونَ

but they rebelled against their Lord’s command, so the blast took them. They looked on helplessly:

52:45 الطور

فَذَرْهُمْ حَتَّىٰ يُلَـٰقُوا۟ يَوْمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِى فِيهِ يُصْعَقُونَ

so leave them, Prophet, until they face the Day when they will be thunderstruck,

54:31 القمر

إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ صَيْحَةً وَٰحِدَةً فَكَانُوا۟ كَهَشِيمِ ٱلْمُحْتَظِرِ

We released a single mighty blast against them and they ended up like a fencemaker’s dry sticks.

63:4 المنافقون

۞ وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَهُمْ تُعْجِبُكَ أَجْسَامُهُمْ ۖ وَإِن يَقُولُوا۟ تَسْمَعْ لِقَوْلِهِمْ ۖ كَأَنَّهُمْ خُشُبٌ مُّسَنَّدَةٌ ۖ يَحْسَبُونَ كُلَّ صَيْحَةٍ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ هُمُ ٱلْعَدُوُّ فَٱحْذَرْهُمْ ۚ قَـٰتَلَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ ۖ أَنَّىٰ يُؤْفَكُونَ

When you see them [Prophet], their outward appearance pleases you; when they speak, you listen to what they say. But they are like propped-up tim-bers––they think every cry they hear is against them––and they are the enemy. Beware of them. May God confound them! How devious they are!

69:5 الحاقة

فَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَأُهْلِكُوا۟ بِٱلطَّاغِيَةِ

Thamud was destroyed by a deafening blast;

69:13 الحاقة

فَإِذَا نُفِخَ فِى ٱلصُّورِ نَفْخَةٌ وَٰحِدَةٌ

When the Trumpet is sounded a single time,

79:6 النازعات

يَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ ٱلرَّاجِفَةُ

on the Day when the blast reverberates

79:7 النازعات

تَتْبَعُهَا ٱلرَّادِفَةُ

and the second blast follows,
