12 verses

When the concept of God's absolute oneness is mentioned on its own, it provokes an immediate and visceral reaction in the human heart. The Quran presents the reality of al-Wahid (The One) not merely as a theological baseline, but as a dividing line that forces a choice. Invoking God exclusively separates those who rely entirely on the Creator from those who seek comfort in the familiar presence of created intermediaries.

Why do people resist worshiping God on His own? The text identifies a specific psychological resistance to absolute monotheism. When God is mentioned on His own, the hearts of those who lack belief in the Hereafter shrink with aversion; they only rejoice when other deities or powers are brought up (39:45). This internal shrinking manifests as physical avoidance. When the Lord is mentioned in the Quran, and Him alone, these individuals turn their backs and run away, as heaviness fills their ears and covers veil their understanding (17:46).

Historically, this resistance was deeply tied to ancestral tradition and societal norms. The opponents of earlier prophets openly challenged the demand for exclusivity, asking, "Have you really come to tell us to serve God alone and to forsake what our forefathers served?" (7:70). To invoke God alone was grounds for outright rejection, while associating others with Him made religious practice acceptable to them (40:12).

How do the prophets confront multiple allegiances? Prophets in the Quran strip away the illusion that divided loyalties can provide security. From a prison cell, Joseph asks his companions a direct question: "Would many diverse gods be better than God the One, the All Powerful?" (12:39). Abraham and his followers set a definitive boundary with their own community, stating they disown whatever is worshiped besides God. They declare that a separation will remain until their people "believe in God alone" (60:4).

The Prophet Muhammad is repeatedly instructed to contrast singular divine power against powerlessness. He is told to ask the people if the blind are equal to those who see, or if the depths of darkness are equal to light, before demanding whether any assigned partners have ever created anything indistinguishable from God's creation (13:16). He is commanded to declare himself simply a warner, affirming there is no deity but God the One, the All Powerful (38:65). This oneness is absolute and unshared. As al-Qurtubi notes (Tafsir al-Qurtubi, 19/6), nothing in the created universe is truly simple and uncompounded; everything else is composite, meaning only God is genuinely One. Because of this absolute self-sufficiency, He is placed far above the human concept of needing offspring (39:4).

What happens when the reality of the One is finally exposed? All illusions of shared power eventually dissolve. The Quran points to a Day when the earth and heavens are transformed, and all humanity will appear entirely exposed before God, the One, the Overpowering (14:48). When they step forward, absolutely nothing about them will be concealed. At the sight of actual punishment, those who previously resisted will declare, "We believe in God alone; we reject any partner we ascribed to Him" (40:84). On that Day, a final question will be posed to the gathering: "Who has control today?" answered by the reality that authority rests entirely with God, the One, the All Powerful (40:16).

They said, ‘Have you really come to tell us to serve God alone and to forsake what our forefathers served? If what you say is true, bring us the punishment you threaten.’

Fellow prisoners, would many diverse gods be better than God the One, the All Powerful? [No indeed!]

Say [Prophet], ‘Who is Lord of the heavens and the earth?’ Say, ‘God.’ Say, ‘Why do you take protectors other than Him, who can neither benefit nor harm even themselves?’ Say, ‘Are the blind equal to those who can see? And are the depths of darkness equal to the light?’ Have the partners they assign to God created anything like His creation so that their creation is indistinguishable from His? Say, ‘God is the Creator of all things: He is the One, the All Compelling.’

One Day- when the earth is turned into another earth, the heavens into another heaven, and people all appear before God, the One, the Overpowering-

We have put covers on their hearts that prevent them from understanding it, and heaviness in their ears. When you mention your Lord in the Quran, and Him alone, they turn their backs and run away.

38:65 ص

God could have chosen any of His creation He willed for offspring, but He is far above this! He is the One, the Almighty.

Whenever God is mentioned on His own, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter shrink with aversion, but they rejoice when gods other than Him are mentioned.

[They will be told], ‘This is all because when God alone was invoked you rejected this, yet when others were associated with Him you believed [in them].’ Judgement belongs to God the Most High, the Most Great.

the Day when they will come out and nothing about them will be concealed from God. ‘Who has control today?’ ‘God, the One, the All Powerful.

when they saw Our punishment, they said, ‘We believe in God alone; we reject any partner we ascribed to Him,’

You have a good example in Abraham and his companions, when they said to their people, ‘We disown you and what you worship besides God! We renounce you! Until you believe in God alone, the enmity and hatred that has arisen between us will endure!’––except when Abraham said to his father, ‘I will pray for forgiveness for you though I cannot protect you from God’––[they prayed] ‘Lord, we have put our trust in You; we turn to You; You are our final destination.
