11 verses
Across eleven verses, the Arabic term ʿadn names the specific gardens of lasting bliss promised to the believers. Classical commentators point to the root of the word to define its exact nature. As recorded by Al-Wahidi (Al-Tafsir al-Basit, 10/549), the early linguist Al-Azhari notes that ʿadn comes from the act of residing or settling in a place without moving. Al-Tabari confirms this specific meaning (Jami al-bayan, 11/559), explaining that these are orchards of eternity and permanent residence from which no inhabitant will ever depart. Though it remains a reality not yet seen by human eyes, the texts state unequivocally that this promise from the Lord of Mercy will be fulfilled (19:61).
Who enters the Gardens of Eden? Entry into these perpetual gardens is the specific reward for those who purify themselves (20:76) and those who stand in awe of their Lord (98:8). The crossing into this space is explicitly communal rather than solitary. Believers are admitted into these spaces together with their righteous ancestors, their spouses, and their descendants (13:23). The angels actively pray for this family reunion, supplicating God to admit the believers and their righteous offspring into the lasting Gardens He promised them (40:8). When they finally arrive, they do not face closed doors; the gates of the gardens are cast wide open for them (38:50), an image Al-Zajjaj highlights as signaling a beautiful, welcoming return (Ma'ani al-Quran, 4/337). Upon their entrance, angels come in to greet them from every single gate (13:23).
What do the dwellers wear and see? The verses repeatedly ground the landscape of ʿadn in the presence of flowing streams (16:31, 20:76). Inside these boundaries, the residents are granted "pleasant dwellings" (9:72, 61:12) rather than just open, unstructured terrain. The texts detail specific adornments and physical comforts: the inhabitants wear fine garments of green silk and heavy brocade, and they are ornamented with pearls and bracelets of gold (18:31, 35:33). Inside their homes, they are comfortably seated on soft chairs, enjoying a pleasant resting place (18:31). There is no restriction on what they can experience in this permanent residence, as the texts guarantee they will be granted absolutely everything they wish for (16:31).
What is the greatest triumph in Eden? While rivers, silk, and gold form the physical reality of the gardens, the verses place a non-material reality above all of these comforts. The forgiveness of sins is the prerequisite that first admits them into these spaces (61:12), but the ultimate peak of the reward is relational. The texts describe a state of absolute mutual satisfaction: God is well pleased with them, and they are well pleased with Him (98:8). The promise of the pleasant homes in the Gardens of lasting bliss is immediately followed by the declaration that God’s good pleasure is the "greatest of all," naming this specific divine approval as the true and supreme triumph (9:72).
The believers rest in the certainty of a promise fulfilled, comfortably seated in pleasant dwellings graced with flowing streams, wearing fine green silk and brocade, knowing they will stay in that lasting bliss forever (18:31, 98:8).
