When We told the angels, ‘Bow down before Adam,’ they all bowed. But not Iblis, who refused and was arrogant: he was one of the disobedient.
We created you, We gave you shape, and then We said to the angels, ‘Bow down before Adam,’ and they did. But not Iblis: he was not one of those who bowed down.
God said, ‘What prevented you from bowing down as I commanded you?’ and he said, ‘I am better than him: You created me from fire and him from clay.’
God said, ‘Get down from here! This is no place for your arrogance. Get out! You are contemptible!’
- 7:14 الأعراف قَالَ أَنظِرْنِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ but Iblis said, ‘Give me respite until the Day people are raised from the dead,’
- 7:15 الأعراف قَالَ إِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُنظَرِينَ and God replied, ‘You have respite.’
And then Iblis said, ‘Because You have put me in the wrong, I will lie in wait for them all on Your straight path:
I will come at them- from their front and their back, from their right and their left- and You will find that most of them are ungrateful.’
God said, ‘Get out! You are disgraced and banished! I swear I shall fill Hell with you and all who follow you!
But not Iblis: he refused to bow down like the others.
God said, ‘Iblis, why did you not bow down like the others?’
- 15:33 الحجر قَالَ لَمْ أَكُن لِّأَسْجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقْتَهُۥ مِن صَلْصَـٰلٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ and he answered, ‘I will not bow to a mortal You created from dried clay, formed from dark mud.’
Get out of here!’ said God. ‘You are an outcast,
- 15:35 الحجر وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكَ ٱللَّعْنَةَ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ rejected until the Day of Judgement.’
Iblis said, ‘My Lord, give me respite until the Day when they are raised from the dead.’
You have respite,’ said God,
- 15:38 الحجر إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْوَقْتِ ٱلْمَعْلُومِ ‘until the Day of the Appointed Time.’
Iblis then said to God, ‘Because You have put me in the wrong, I will lure mankind on earth and put them in the wrong,
- 15:40 الحجر إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ all except Your devoted servants.’
When We said to the angels, ‘Bow down before Adam,’ they all bowed down, but not Iblis. He retorted, ‘Why should I bow down to someone You have created out of clay?’
- 17:62 الإسراء قَالَ أَرَءَيْتَكَ هَـٰذَا ٱلَّذِى كَرَّمْتَ عَلَىَّ لَئِنْ أَخَّرْتَنِ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ لَأَحْتَنِكَنَّ ذُرِّيَّتَهُۥٓ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا and [then] said, ‘You see this being You have honoured above me? If You reprieve me until the Day of Resurrection, I will lead all but a few of his descendants by the nose.’
God said, ‘Go away! Hell will be your reward, and the reward of any of them who follow you- an ample reward.
Rouse whichever of them you can with your voice, muster your cavalry and infantry against them, share their wealth and their children with them, and make promises to them- Satan promises them nothing but delusion-
- 17:65 الإسراء إِنَّ عِبَادِى لَيْسَ لَكَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُلْطَـٰنٌ ۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِرَبِّكَ وَكِيلًا but you will have no authority over My [true] servants: Your Lord can take care of them well enough.’
We said to the angels, ‘Bow down before Adam,’ and they all bowed down, but not Iblis: he was one of the jinn and he disobeyed his Lord’s command. Are you [people] going to take him and his offspring as your masters instead of Me, even though they are your enemies? What a bad bargain for the evildoers!
When We said to the angels, ‘Bow down before Adam,’ they did. But Iblis refused,
- 38:74 ص إِلَّآ إِبْلِيسَ ٱسْتَكْبَرَ وَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ but not Iblis, who was too proud. He became a rebel.
God said, ‘Iblis, what prevents you from bowing down to the man I have made with My own hands? Are you too high and mighty?’
Iblis said, ‘I am better than him: You made me from fire, and him from clay.’
Get out of here! You are rejected:
My rejection will follow you till the Day of Judgement!’
- 38:79 ص قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنظِرْنِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ but Iblis said, ‘My Lord, grant me respite until the Day when they are raised from the dead,’
- 38:80 ص قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُنظَرِينَ so He said, ‘You have respite
- 38:81 ص إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْوَقْتِ ٱلْمَعْلُومِ till the Appointed Day.’
Iblis said, ‘I swear by Your might! I will tempt all
- 38:83 ص إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ but Your true servants.’
God said, ‘This is the truth- I speak only the truth-
I will fill Hell with you and all those that follow you.’
