About Eid al-Fitr
Eid al-Fitr (Festival of Breaking the Fast) marks the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic calendar. Eid al-Fitr 2026 is expected on March 20, 2026. It is a joyous celebration involving communal prayers, charitable giving (Zakat al-Fitr), and family gatherings.
Eid al-Fitr is one of the two major Islamic holidays. It begins with a special congregational prayer (Salat al-Eid) performed in the morning. Before the prayer, Muslims are required to pay Zakat al-Fitr, a charitable contribution given to ensure that those in need can also celebrate the occasion. The day is marked by visiting family and friends, sharing meals, giving gifts to children, and expressing gratitude to Allah for the strength to complete the fast of Ramadan.
