Supplication Between the Two Prostrations
اَللّٰهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِيْ ، وَارْحَمْنِيْ ، وَعَافِنيْ ، وَاهْدِنِيْ وَارْزُقْنِيْ
O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, grant me well-being, guide me, and provide for me.
Allāhumma-ghfir lī, wa-rḥamnī, wa-ʿāfinī, wa-hdinī wa-rzuqnī.
Reference
Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say between the two prostrations:
- Abū Dāwūd 850 · 2/138 إسناده حسن— شعيب الأرنؤوط ومحمد كامل قره بللي
- Natāʾij al-Afkār (Ibn Ḥajar) 2/122 حديث غريب— ابن حجر
Explanation
Five requests follow one another: forgiveness (ghafara, to cover and pardon), mercy, ʿāfiya (well-being and safety from harm), guidance, and provision. Tuḥfat al-Aḥwadhī says the report shows it is prescribed to supplicate with these words in the sitting between the two prostrations. It notes that the Tirmidhī wording has wa-jburnī (“enrich me”, as al-Jazarī glosses it) in place of wa-ʿāfinī. Al-Jazarī explains jabara as returning what was lost or compensating for it, from the mending of a fracture.
