Supplication Between the Two Prostrations

اَللّٰهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِيْ ، وَارْحَمْنِيْ ، وَعَافِنيْ ، وَاهْدِنِيْ وَارْزُقْنِيْ.

English

O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, grant me well-being, guide me, and provide for me.

Allāhumma-ghfir lī wa-rḥamnī wa-ʿāfinī wa-hdinī wa-rzuqnī

Reference

Ibn ʿAbbās reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say these words between the two prostrations:

  • Abū Dāwūd 850 · 2/138 إسناده حسن— شعيب الأرنؤوط ومحمد كامل قره بللي
  • Natāʾij al-Afkār (Ibn Ḥajar) 2/122 حديث غريب— ابن حجر

Explanation

Five requests follow one another: forgiveness, mercy, well-being (ʿāfiya, safety and health), guidance and provision. Al-Tuḥfa says the hadith shows it is prescribed to supplicate with these words in the sitting between the two prostrations. It also records variants of the wording: wa-jburnī in place of wa-ʿāfinī, which al-Jazarī explains as “enrich me”, from the phrase “Allah mended his loss”, meaning He restored to him what was lost or compensated him for it, its root being the mending of a break.
