Asking Allah to Increase Knowledge
رَبِّ زِدْنِيْ عِلْمًا.
English
My Lord, increase me in knowledge.
Rabbi zidnī ʿilmā
Reference
It is in Sūrat Ṭā Hā (20:114), where the command ‘And say’ comes before these words:
- Qur'an 20:114
Explanation
Zidnī means increase me, and ʿilm is knowledge. Fatḥ al-Bārī calls the verse clear evidence for the merit of knowledge, because Allah did not command His Prophet (peace be upon him) to ask for more of anything except knowledge. It explains that the knowledge meant is the knowledge of the sharia, which teaches a person what is required of him in worship and dealings. It also includes knowledge of Allah and His attributes.
