English

The Compeller.

al-Jabbār

Reference

This Name is in the Qur'an, Sūrat al-Ḥashr (59), verse 23:

  • Qur'an 59:23

Explanation

Al-Jabbār comes from the root j-b-r, which carries the sense of setting a matter right by force and of bending things to one's will. In the verse it is one of a series of Names that follow “He is Allah, other than whom there is no god”. It stands directly after al-ʿAzīz and before al-Mutakabbir. The verse ends by declaring Allah far above whatever they associate with Him.
