Virtue & Reward

After hearing the words of this supplication, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said that the man had called upon Allah by His Greatest Name, the one by which, when He is called upon, He answers, and when He is asked, He gives.

Explanation

Al-Mannān comes from manna, to confer a favour, and the intensive form describes One whose favours are abundant. In the supplication it is a call (Yā Mannān) coming after the declaration that there is no god but Allah. The man heard praying was asking by the fact that all praise belongs to Allah, and then addressed Him by this Name, followed by other Names. The Prophet (peace be upon him) responded to this wording by describing it as a call upon Allah by His Greatest Name.
