The rise and ruin of nations do not happen by accident, but adhere to an unbending divine precedent. When communities persist in hostility, their eventual fate mirrors the exact outcomes laid down for earlier peoples. God declares repeatedly that there is no alteration in His practice, establishing an absolute consistency in how He governs creation across centuries.

How are nations judged for arrogance?

When a community rejects divine guidance, their trajectory follows a strict historical precedent. The idolaters swore solemn oaths that they would be more rightly guided than any previous community if only a warner came to them (35:42). Yet when a warner actually arrived, they turned further away, amplified their arrogance in the land, and intensified their plotting of evil. The response to this behavior is a fixed law: evil plotting only rebounds on those who plot. They cannot expect anything other than what happened to earlier people, because you will never find any change or deviation in God's practice (35:43).

The choice offered to such societies is binary and historically tested. If disbelievers desist from their opposition, their past is forgiven; but if they persist, they have the clear example of the fate of those who went before (8:38). The text asks what stops people from believing and seeking forgiveness once clear guidance arrives, except an irrational wait for the exact same annihilation or torment that confronted earlier peoples to overtake them too (18:55).

Does this pattern apply to Prophets?

The consistency of divine law governs the messengers themselves, not just those who oppose them. The mandates given to the Prophet follow the exact way God dealt with the messengers sent before him, a methodology that experiences no change (17:77). When God ordains a specific command or circumstance, the Prophet bears no fault for fulfilling it, because this reflects God's established practice with those who went before (33:38).

The execution of a divine command must be fulfilled, binding the present messenger to the same standards and support structures as his predecessors. Whether dealing with societal resistance or personal mandates, the rule is fixed. Repeatedly, it is affirmed that across all past generations and conflicts, this practice remains entirely unchanged, establishing that the current messenger is walking a deeply set path (33:62, 48:23).

Can belief avert an active punishment?

A crucial aspect of this unchanging precedent governs the strict limits of repentance. A pattern established for all of God's creatures dictates that accepting faith only when destruction is already visible is entirely futile. When earlier nations were struck, believing after actually seeing the punishment did not benefit them at all (40:85). This limitation is explicitly named as God’s constant way of dealing with His creatures throughout history, ensuring that in that final, desperate moment, the disbelievers are definitively lost.

The declarations of an unvarying precedent dismantle the illusion that a people might somehow outsmart divine law or receive an arbitrary exemption. Instead of assuming they will be spared the outcomes of their predecessors, hostile communities are handed a stark historical mirror. Their plotting of evil only rebounds upon themselves, and they are left expecting nothing else but the exact fate that overtook the earlier peoples (35:43).
