In the vocabulary of revelation, the inability to speak is rarely a physical impairment; it is a terminal spiritual condition where the soul loses its capacity to articulate or respond to truth. Frequently clustered with deafness and blindness, dumbness represents a total shutdown of the human faculties of guidance. When these channels are definitively closed, a person crosses a threshold where "they will never return" (2:18).

What is spiritual dumbness?

The verses illustrate this state not as a quiet muteness, but as a profound cognitive disconnect. Those who reject divine signs are characterized as "deaf, dumb, and in total darkness" (6:39). To preach to them is compared to an animal handler shouting at livestock: the listener hears "nothing but a shout and a cry" (2:171). The physical sound registers in the ear, but the intellect is completely disengaged from the meaning. Because they refuse to process the message, they are functionally "deaf, dumb, and blind, and they understand nothing" (2:171). The breakdown happens in the mind, not the vocal cords.

Who are considered the worst creatures?

This willful suspension of intellect draws the heaviest censure. The text states that "the worst creatures in God’s eyes are those who are [wilfully] deaf and dumb, who do not reason" (8:22). By abandoning their capacity to listen and speak truth, such individuals drop below the station of humanity. Early commentators debated the exact historical identity of this group. Classical exegesis records the view that this verse refers specifically to the hypocrites (Mawsu'at al-Tafsir al-Ma'thur, 9/709), while al-Tabari argues the surrounding context points directly to the polytheists (Tafsir al-Tabari, 13/459). In either case, the defining trait is the deliberate abandonment of reason. God leaves such individuals to stray, just as He sets whoever He wills upon a straight path (6:39).

What is the parable of the dumb man?

Beyond spiritual muteness, the literal lack of speech serves as a stark theological contrast regarding false worship. A parable is presented of two men: one is physically dumb, entirely dependent, "unable to do anything, a burden to his carer" (16:76). Whatever task he is directed toward, he achieves nothing good. This helpless figure is juxtaposed against a man who "commands justice and is on the straight path" (16:76). The illustration vividly separates the dead inertia of idols—and the spiritual state of those who blindly worship them—from the active, speaking, guiding reality of the Creator.

The spiritual silence chosen in this world materializes as a terrifying physical reality in the next. Those whom God leaves astray for their rejection will be resurrected stripped entirely of their senses. They will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection "lying on their faces, blind, dumb, and deaf" (17:97). Deprived of sight, hearing, and speech, their isolation is absolute, trapping them in the darkness they preferred on earth. Hell becomes their permanent home, and whenever the fire goes down, God "shall make it blaze more fiercely for them" (17:97).
