disbelievers receive their record with their left hand

13 verses

When a person's book of deeds is thrust into their left hand on the Day of Judgment, the gesture itself signals immediate and undeniable ruin before a single page is read. This transaction is not a quiet or private moment; it is a catastrophic realization for those who spent their lives relying on material strength rather than faith. The Quran details the exact sequence of spoken regrets and the subsequent divine sentencing of a person who receives their ledger in this manner. It captures an exposure so total that the individual instantly understands the gravity of their standing before God.

How does a person react to receiving their record this way?

The instant the record lands in the left hand, the recipient is broken by the weight of their own history. The Quran records their desperate wish for absolute ignorance, as they cry out, "If only I had never been given any Record and knew nothing of my Reckoning" (69:25-26). They do not attempt to deny the charges, mount a defense, or excuse their behavior. Instead, they wish that their initial death in the world had simply been a permanent, erasing end to their existence (69:27). In this panic, the foundational pillars of their former confidence completely collapse. They are forced to vocalize the futility of their past life, admitting that the wealth they amassed has been of no use to them, and the power they once commanded has vanished into nothing (69:28-29).

Why are they judged with the left hand?

The text isolates two specific, defining failures that guarantee a person's place among this group. The first is a fundamental spiritual rejection: the individual "would not believe in Almighty God" (69:33). The second is a severe social and moral failure directed at the most vulnerable members of society. The person "never encouraged feeding the hungry" (69:34). The verses point out that they did not merely refuse to share their own provisions; they lacked the basic human compassion to even urge others to care for the starving. These intertwined actions—ignoring the rights of the Creator and dismissing the basic survival of the destitute—form the complete indictment against them.

What is the physical reality of their sentence?

The psychological collapse of reading the record is immediately followed by a severe physical reality. A direct command is issued to seize the individual and place a collar upon them, permanently stripping away the autonomy they misused in life (69:30). From there, they are commanded to be led into a blazing Fire, where they are bound in a chain described as being exactly seventy meters long (69:31-32). The cold isolation they showed to the hungry in the world is perfectly mirrored in their final destination.

The record given in the left hand marks the absolute transition from worldly arrogance to eternal consequence. The wealth and authority that defined the individual evaporate entirely, replaced by a seventy-meter chain and a restrictive collar. Left entirely without the influence they relied upon in life, the person finds they have no real friend to turn to today, and the only food they have is filth (69:35-36).

69:25 Al-Haqqah

But anyone who is given his Record in his left hand will say, ‘If only I had never been given any Record

69:26 Al-Haqqah

and knew nothing of my Reckoning.

69:27 Al-Haqqah

How I wish death had been the end of me.

69:28 Al-Haqqah

My wealth has been no use to me,

69:29 Al-Haqqah

and my power has vanished.’

69:30 Al-Haqqah

‘Take him, put a collar on him,

69:31 Al-Haqqah

lead him to burn in the blazing Fire,

69:32 Al-Haqqah

and [bind him] in a chain seventy metres long:

69:33 Al-Haqqah

he would not believe in Almighty God,

69:34 Al-Haqqah

he never encouraged feeding the hungry,

69:35 Al-Haqqah

so today he has no real friend here,

69:36 Al-Haqqah

and the only food he has is the filth

69:37 Al-Haqqah

that only sinners eat.’
