31 verses
God does not speak to mortals openly face-to-face; instead, divine communication crosses into the human realm through precise, restricted channels. Before receiving this contact, a messenger might live entirely unaware of the scripture or the faith he is about to carry. The sudden insertion of divine will acts as a "spirit" revealed by God's command, transforming an uninformed life into a guiding light used to direct others to the straight path (42:52). This transmission is not an organic outgrowth of the prophet's intellect, nor is it driven by personal ambition. The messenger does not speak from his own desire; his articulation is nothing less than a direct revelation sent down to him (53:3-4).
How does God communicate with mortals?
The mechanics of divine contact are strictly categorized. It is not granted to any mortal to be spoken to by God without an intermediary medium. Instead, this speech occurs in three specific modes: through direct internal revelation, from behind a veil, or by dispatching a heavenly messenger to reveal exactly what God commands (42:51). Because the human instrument is merely a vessel, the integrity of the resulting text is defended against accusations of madness or self-interest. The Prophet is characterized as a sane companion who has neither strayed nor been deluded (53:2). Furthermore, he possesses no independent power to produce physical miracles to validate his message on demand; earlier messengers, who were also given wives and offspring like ordinary men, could only produce a miracle with God's explicit permission (13:38).
Is the Quran the only revelation?
The arrival of a revelation is not treated as a historical anomaly, but as a recurring necessity. There has been a specific scripture for every age (13:38). Previous generations received their own foundational texts. The Children of Israel, for instance, were historically granted scripture, wisdom, and prophethood, alongside provisions that favored them above others in their time (45:16). The text revealed to Moses is explicitly cited as a predecessor that functioned as a guide and a mercy to his people. The current revelation is positioned as a direct continuation, delivered in the Arabic language to confirm the scriptures before it. It operates with a dual purpose: to serve as a warning to those who do evil, and to bring good news to those who do good (46:12).
The psychological weight of the words
The arrival of a new text exerts a heavy psychological demand, exposing the internal state of its audience. Believers often anticipate new instructions, asking why a specific sura has not yet been sent down to clarify their duties. Yet when a decisive sura is finally revealed—particularly one that mentions fighting—the community instantly fractures. While the sincere accept the difficult command, those who are "sick at heart" can be seen looking at the Prophet and visibly fainting at the prospect of death (47:20).
The revelation is not merely an abstract spiritual encounter, but a concrete record meant to outlast the moment of its delivery. Transmitted from an unseen realm and physically inscribed into unrolled parchment (52:2-3), the text anchors itself in the material world. Yet before it ever reaches human hands or earthly languages, it remains securely elevated in the Source of Scripture kept directly with God, exalted and full of wisdom (43:4).

وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا رُسُلًا مِّن قَبْلِكَ وَجَعَلْنَا لَهُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا وَذُرِّيَّةً ۚ وَمَا كَانَ لِرَسُولٍ أَن يَأْتِىَ بِـَٔايَةٍ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ ۗ لِكُلِّ أَجَلٍ كِتَابٌ
We sent messengers before you and gave them wives and offspring; no messenger was given the power to produce a miracle except with God’s permission. There was a Scripture for every age:
۞ وَمَا كَانَ لِبَشَرٍ أَن يُكَلِّمَهُ ٱللَّهُ إِلَّا وَحْيًا أَوْ مِن وَرَآئِ حِجَابٍ أَوْ يُرْسِلَ رَسُولًا فَيُوحِىَ بِإِذْنِهِۦ مَا يَشَآءُ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ عَلِىٌّ حَكِيمٌ
It is not granted to any mortal that God should speak to him except through revelation or from behind a veil, or by sending a messenger to reveal by His command what He will: He is exalted and wise.
وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْكَ رُوحًا مِّنْ أَمْرِنَا ۚ مَا كُنتَ تَدْرِى مَا ٱلْكِتَـٰبُ وَلَا ٱلْإِيمَـٰنُ وَلَـٰكِن جَعَلْنَـٰهُ نُورًا نَّهْدِى بِهِۦ مَن نَّشَآءُ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا ۚ وَإِنَّكَ لَتَهْدِىٓ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ
So We have revealed a spirit to you [Prophet] by Our command: you knew neither the Scripture nor the faith, but We made it a light, guiding with it whoever We will of Our servants. You give guidance to the straight path,
وَإِنَّهُۥ فِىٓ أُمِّ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ لَدَيْنَا لَعَلِىٌّ حَكِيمٌ
It is truly exalted in the Source of Scripture kept with Us, and full of wisdom.
وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلْحُكْمَ وَٱلنُّبُوَّةَ وَرَزَقْنَـٰهُم مِّنَ ٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتِ وَفَضَّلْنَـٰهُمْ عَلَى ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
We gave scripture, wisdom, and prophethood to the Children of Israel; We provided them with good things and favoured them above others;
وَمِن قَبْلِهِۦ كِتَـٰبُ مُوسَىٰٓ إِمَامًا وَرَحْمَةً ۚ وَهَـٰذَا كِتَـٰبٌ مُّصَدِّقٌ لِّسَانًا عَرَبِيًّا لِّيُنذِرَ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ وَبُشْرَىٰ لِلْمُحْسِنِينَ
Yet the scripture of Moses was revealed before it as a guide and a mercy, and this is a scripture confirming it in the Arabic language to warn those who do evil and bring good news for those who do good.
وَيَقُولُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَوْلَا نُزِّلَتْ سُورَةٌ ۖ فَإِذَآ أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ مُّحْكَمَةٌ وَذُكِرَ فِيهَا ٱلْقِتَالُ ۙ رَأَيْتَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَيْكَ نَظَرَ ٱلْمَغْشِىِّ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْمَوْتِ ۖ فَأَوْلَىٰ لَهُمْ
Those who believe ask why no sura [about fighting] has been sent down. Yet when a decisive sura [that mentions fighting] is sent down, you can see the sick at heart looking at you [Prophet] and visibly fainting at the prospect of death- better for them
وَكِتَـٰبٍ مَّسْطُورٍ
by a Scripture inscribed
فِى رَقٍّ مَّنشُورٍ
in unrolled parch-ment,
مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَىٰ
Your companion has not strayed; he is not deluded;
وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰٓ
he does not speak from his own desire.
إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْىٌ يُوحَىٰ
The Quran is nothing less than a revelation that is sent to him.
عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِيدُ ٱلْقُوَىٰ
It was taught to him by [an angel] with mighty powers
ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَٱسْتَوَىٰ
and great strength, who stood
وَهُوَ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ
on the highest horizon
ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ
and then approached––coming down
فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَىٰ
until he was two bow-lengths away or even closer––
فَأَوْحَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ عَبْدِهِۦ مَآ أَوْحَىٰ
and revealed to God’s servant what He revealed.
مَا كَذَبَ ٱلْفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰٓ
[The Prophet’s] own heart did not distort what he saw.
تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
sent down from the Lord of all being.
۞ أَلَمْ يَأْنِ لِلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ أَن تَخْشَعَ قُلُوبُهُمْ لِذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ وَمَا نَزَلَ مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ وَلَا يَكُونُوا۟ كَٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ مِن قَبْلُ فَطَالَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْأَمَدُ فَقَسَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ ۖ وَكَثِيرٌ مِّنْهُمْ فَـٰسِقُونَ
Is it not time for believers to humble their hearts to the remembrance of God and the Truth that has been revealed, and not to be like those who received the Scripture before them, whose time was extended but whose hearts hardened and many of whom were lawbreakers?
لَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا رُسُلَنَا بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ وَأَنزَلْنَا مَعَهُمُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلْمِيزَانَ لِيَقُومَ ٱلنَّاسُ بِٱلْقِسْطِ ۖ وَأَنزَلْنَا ٱلْحَدِيدَ فِيهِ بَأْسٌ شَدِيدٌ وَمَنَـٰفِعُ لِلنَّاسِ وَلِيَعْلَمَ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَنصُرُهُۥ وَرُسُلَهُۥ بِٱلْغَيْبِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَوِىٌّ عَزِيزٌ
We sent Our messengers with clear signs, the Scripture and the Balance, so that people could uphold justice: We also sent iron, with its mighty strength and many uses for mankind, so that God could mark out those who would help Him and His messengers though they cannot see Him. Truly God is powerful, almighty.
وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا نُوحًا وَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَجَعَلْنَا فِى ذُرِّيَّتِهِمَا ٱلنُّبُوَّةَ وَٱلْكِتَـٰبَ ۖ فَمِنْهُم مُّهْتَدٍ ۖ وَكَثِيرٌ مِّنْهُمْ فَـٰسِقُونَ
We sent Noah and Abraham, and gave prophethood and scripture to their offspring: among them there were some who were rightly guided, but many were lawbreakers.
وَمَرْيَمَ ٱبْنَتَ عِمْرَٰنَ ٱلَّتِىٓ أَحْصَنَتْ فَرْجَهَا فَنَفَخْنَا فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِنَا وَصَدَّقَتْ بِكَلِمَـٰتِ رَبِّهَا وَكُتُبِهِۦ وَكَانَتْ مِنَ ٱلْقَـٰنِتِينَ
and Mary, daughter of Imran. She guarded her chastity, so We breathed into her from Our spirit. She accepted the truth of her Lord’s words and Scriptures: she was truly devout.
تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
This [Quran] is a message sent down from the Lord of the Worlds:
وَمَا جَعَلْنَآ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَـٰٓئِكَةً ۙ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَيَزْدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِيمَـٰنًا ۙ وَلَا يَرْتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ وَٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَـٰذَا مَثَلًا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَمَا هِىَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ
none other than angels appointed by Us to guard Hellfire- and We have made their number a test for the disbelievers. So those who have been given the Scripture will be certain and those who believe will have their faith increased: neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers will have any doubts, but the sick at heart and the disbelievers will say, ‘What could God mean by this description?’ God leaves whoever He will to stray and guides whoever He will- no one knows your Lord’s forces except Him- this [description] is a warning to mortals.
بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُؤْتَىٰ صُحُفًا مُّنَشَّرَةً
Each one of them demands that a scripture be sent down to him and unrolled before his very eyes-
فِى صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ
[written] on honoured,
لَمْ يَكُنِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ وَٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ مُنفَكِّينَ حَتَّىٰ تَأْتِيَهُمُ ٱلْبَيِّنَةُ
Those who disbelieve among the People of the Book and the idolaters were not about to change their ways until they were sent clear evidence,
وَمَا تَفَرَّقَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا جَآءَتْهُمُ ٱلْبَيِّنَةُ
[Yet] those who were given the Scripture became divided only after they were sent [such] clear evi-dence
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ وَٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ فِى نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمْ شَرُّ ٱلْبَرِيَّةِ
Those who disbelieve among the People of the Book and the idolaters will have the Fire of Hell, there to remain. They are the worst of creation.
