20 verses
Human routine in the text is mapped directly to the physical sky, anchoring acts of worship and moments of domestic privacy to the shifting positions of the sun. Rather than citing numbered hours, the verses measure a day by the sun passing its zenith, the fading light at both horizons, and the deep cover of night. These natural transitions act as literal markers, requiring believers to step away from their affairs and align their physical state with the passing of time.
When are the specific times for prayer and praise?
The command to pray is firmly tethered to daylight's progression and retreat. Believers are instructed to perform regular prayers starting from the moment the sun moves past its peak until the darkness of the night settles (17:78). Praise belongs to God at distinct, named phases: in the morning, at midday, in the late afternoon, and in the evening (30:17-18). The text repeatedly emphasizes the boundaries of the day, directing the Prophet to keep up prayer at "both ends of the day" and during the nighttime, stating explicitly that these good deeds drive away bad ones (11:114). The natural world itself operates on this identical rhythm; God mentions making the mountains join David in glorifying Him precisely at sunrise and sunset (38:18). This rhythm shapes communal life, with scripture describing raised houses of worship where men celebrate God's glory every morning and evening (24:36), as well as commanding praise at the end of every prayer (50:40).
How do the hours dictate household privacy?
Beyond formal worship, the times of day govern the social boundaries within a Muslim household. Scripture identifies three specific periods as "times for privacy," during which slaves and prepubescent children must ask for permission before entering private living quarters. These boundaries are established around periods of rest and prayer: before the dawn prayer, during the midday heat when heavy garments are laid aside, and after the evening prayer (24:58). Outside of these three designated windows, the text notes there is no blame on household members for moving freely around one another, proving that God makes His messages clear through the practicalities of daily life.
What is the significance of the night?
While the day is heavily structured with obligatory remembrance, the night offers a distinct space for voluntary devotion. The text commands the Prophet to wake and pray during the night as an extra offering, promising that his Lord may raise him to a highly praised status as a result (17:79). This nighttime vigilance is framed as a deeply physical act of devotion. True believers are described not merely as those who pray, but as those whose "sides shun their beds" so they can call to their Lord in a state of fear and hope (32:16).
Scripture closely binds the act of marking time to the emotional resilience of the believer. God instructs the Prophet to bear his detractors' words with patience specifically by celebrating His praise before the sun rises, before it sets, and at the beginning and end of the day, in order to find true contentment (20:130). Yet among all these transitions, the text elevates the break of day with a distinct guarantee. Those who rise from sleep are told to recite the Quran at dawn, because dawn recitation is always witnessed (17:78).

[Prophet], keep up the prayer at both ends of the day, and during parts of the night, for good things drive bad away- this is a reminder for those who are aware.
So perform the regular prayers in the period from the time the sun is past its zenith till the darkness of the night, and [recite] the Quran at dawn- dawn recitation is always witnessed––
and dur-ing the night wake up and pray, as an extra offering of your own, so that your Lord may raise you to a [highly] praised status.
so [Prophet] be patient with what they say- celebrate the praise of your Lord, before the rising and setting of the sun, celebrate His praise during the night, and at the beginning and end of the day, so that you may find contentment-
shining out in houses of worship. God has ordained that they be raised high and that His name be remembered in them, with men in them celebrating His glory morning and evening:
Believers, your slaves and any who have not yet reached puberty should ask your permission to come in at three times of day: before the dawn prayer; when you lay your garments aside in the midday heat; and after the evening prayer. These are your three times for privacy; at other times, there is no blame on you or them if you move around each other freely. In this way God makes messages clear: God is all knowing, all wise.
So celebrate God’s glory in the evening, in the morning-
praise is due to Him in the heavens and the earth- in the late afternoon, and at midday.
Their sides shun their beds in order to pray to their Lord in fear and hope; they give to others some of what We have given them.
We made the mountains join him in glorifying Us at sunset and sunrise;
So [Prophet], bear everything they say with patience; celebrate the praise of your Lord before the rising and setting of the sun;
proclaim His praise in the night and at the end of every prayer;
sleeping only little at night,
Wait patiently [Prophet] for your Lord’s judgement: you are under Our watchful eye. Celebrate the praise of your Lord when you rise.
Glorify Him at night and at the fading of the stars.
Stay up throughout the night, all but a small part of it,
half, or a little less,
or a little more; recite the Quran slowly and distinctly:
remember the name of your Lord at dawn and in the evening;
bow down before Him, and glorify Him at length by night.
