The visible sky serves as a clock for humanity in the Quran, with crescent moons explicitly designated to show "the times appointed for people, and for the pilgrimage" (2:189). Yet parallel to these earthly cycles runs a hidden cosmic schedule. From the exact number of nights Moses waited on the mountain to the predetermined moment the world will end, time operates entirely as a sequence of fixed appointments firmly in the Creator's grasp.

How does the Quran structure daily life?

Earthly time is anchored by the rhythmic obligation of worship. The text emphasizes that ritual prayer is not left to human convenience, but is "obligatory for the believers at prescribed times" (4:103). However, the conclusion of a scheduled prayer does not signal a break in devotion; the same verse instructs believers to continue remembering God whether standing, sitting, or lying down. This unbroken awareness requires immense presence of mind. As Abu al-Qasim al-Qushayri observes (Lata'if al-Isharat, 3/565), the individual who is fully occupied with what God requires of them in the current moment is connected to their Lord, no longer consumed by what has passed or what is to come.

What are the divine appointments?

Specific historical events in the Quran are framed as strict, inescapable appointments with God. When Moses left his people in Aaron’s care, it was for a precisely measured term of thirty nights, later extended by ten to complete a forty-night period (7:142). It was at this specific appointment that Moses asked to see his Lord, an event that culminated in the mountain crumbling and Moses falling unconscious (7:143). Later, Moses selected seventy men for another divine appointment, where a sudden trembling seized them and prompted his desperate prayer for mercy and forgiveness (7:155). Even earthly confrontations operate on this rigid schedule, such as when Pharaoh's sorcerers were assembled "at the appointed time on a certain day" (26:38).

When is the ultimate limit of time?

Every earthly timeline converges on the "Day of Decision," described repeatedly as the time appointed for all humanity, when every person will be gathered on a predetermined day (44:40, 56:50, 78:17). This fixed endpoint even restricts Iblis. When he requests a reprieve, he is not granted unlimited time. As noted in Mawsu'at al-Tafsir al-Mathur (9/27), he is not reprieved until the actual Day of Resurrection, but only "until the Day of the Appointed Time" (15:38, 38:81)—meaning his delay has a very specific, absolute limit known only to God. As this worldly time runs out, its temporary nature becomes stark. Abu Hafs al-Nasafi notes (Al-Taysir fi al-Tafsir, 8/73) that once past, time feels like a mere instant, leaving one to wonder what lasting effect remains, while the future approaches so rapidly it is as if it has already arrived.

When people attempt to peer past the veil of this approaching future, they are met with a firm boundary. Questioned about the exact timing of the Hour, the Prophet is instructed to answer that the knowledge rests with God alone, though most people do not realize it. It remains a reality that is momentous in both the heavens and the earth, waiting to come upon humanity all too suddenly (7:187).

2:189 Al-Baqarah

They ask you [Prophet] about crescent moons. Say, ‘They show the times appointed for people, and for the pilgrimage.’ Goodness does not consist of entering houses by the back [door]; the truly good person is the one who is mindful of God. So enter your houses by their [main] doors and be mindful of God so that you may prosper.

4:103 An-Nisa

After performing the ritual prayer, continue to remember God- standing, sitting, and lying on your sides- and once you are safe, keep up regular prayer, for prayer is obligatory for the believers at prescribed times.

7:142 Al-A'raf

We appointed thirty nights for Moses, then added ten more: the term set by his Lord was completed in forty nights. Moses said to his brother Aaron, ‘Take my place among my people: act rightly and do not follow the way of those who spread corruption.’

7:143 Al-A'raf

When Moses came for the appointment, and his Lord spoke to him, he said, ‘My Lord, show Yourself to me: let me see You!’ He said, ‘You will never see Me, but look at that mountain: if it remains standing firm, you will see Me,’ and when his Lord revealed Himself to the mountain, He made it crumble: Moses fell down unconscious. When he recovered, he said, ‘Glory be to You! To You I turn in repentance! I am the first to believe!’

7:155 Al-A'raf

Moses chose from his people seventy men for Our appointment, and when they were seized by trembling, he prayed, ‘My Lord, if You had chosen to do so, You could have destroyed them long before this, and me too, so will You now destroy us for what the foolish among us have done? This is only a trial from You- through it, You cause whoever You will to stray and guide whoever You will- and You are our Protector, so forgive us and have mercy on us. You are the best of those who forgive.

7:187 Al-A'raf

They ask you [Prophet] about the Hour, ‘When will it happen?’ Say, ‘My Lord alone has knowledge of it: He alone will reveal when its time will come, a time that is momentous in both the heavens and earth. All too suddenly it will come upon you.’ They ask you about it as if you were eager [to find out]. Say, ‘God alone has knowledge of [when it will come], though most people do not realize it.’

15:38 Al-Hijr

‘until the Day of the Appointed Time.’

26:38 Ash-Shu'ara

The sorcerers were [to be] assembled at the appointed time on a certain day

38:81 Sad

till the Appointed Day.’

44:40 Ad-Dukhan

The Day of Decision is the time appointed for all;

56:50 Al-Waqi'ah

will all be gathered on a predetermined Day

78:17 An-Naba

A time has been appointed for the Day of Decision:
