story with the ant

5 verses

Marching in strict formation, an unprecedented military force comprised of men, jinn, and birds arrived at a location the Quran calls the Valley of the Ants. The commander of this army was Solomon, who had recently succeeded his father, David, inheriting both a kingdom and a highly specific form of divine knowledge (27:16). Despite directing forces that spanned the physical and unseen realms, his entire campaign is remembered for a brief pause triggered by the voice of a single insect on the ground.

What was Solomon given?

The Quran establishes the context of this event not by detailing Solomon's material wealth, but by emphasizing the knowledge granted to his family. Both David and Solomon were given this knowledge by God, and they responded to the gift together by declaring, "Praise be to God, who has favoured us over many of His believing servants" (27:15). Upon formally succeeding his father, Solomon announced to his people that he had been taught the "speech of birds" and granted a share of everything—a reality he explicitly identified as a clear and great favor (27:16).

This divine instruction allowed him to organize a truly diverse military structure. When his hosts gathered, they were not a chaotic swarm. The jinn, the men, and the birds were marshalled into ordered ranks, strictly segregated into disciplined formations under his direct command before they set out (27:17).

What did the ant say in the valley?

As this massive, multi-species army advanced, they approached the Valley of the Ants. At this moment, the Quran isolates the perspective of one specific ant addressing its colony. The creature instructed the other ants to retreat immediately, saying, "Ants! Go into your homes" (27:18). The command was issued to prevent the colony from being crushed by Solomon and his advancing hosts.

Notably, the ant's warning contained a clear assumption of innocence on the part of the army. The insect warned its colony that the impending destruction would happen "unwittingly," recognizing that Solomon and his ranks would not intentionally trample them into the earth (27:18).

How did Solomon respond to the warning?

Because he had been granted the ability to understand such creatures, Solomon heard the ant's command. Rather than ignoring the insect or asserting his dominance over the valley, he smiled broadly at her words (27:19). The voice of an ant scrambling to protect its home from his marching jinn and men provoked neither arrogance nor a display of royal power.

Instead, the tiny voice triggered immediate supplication. Solomon turned directly to God, asking to be inspired with continuous gratitude for the immense blessings granted not only to him but also to his parents (27:19). The encounter pivots from a display of total military superiority into a private moment of submission. Hearing the ant prompts the king to ask God for the ability to do good deeds that please Him, praying only that God will admit him, by His grace, into the ranks of His righteous servants (27:19).
