A single grain resting in the pitch darkness of the earth does not escape divine notice; rather, it is already written in a clear Record alongside every leaf that falls (6:59). In Quranic imagery, the seed is never merely an agricultural fact or a static object buried in the soil. It serves as the metric of God's exact awareness of the unseen, the physical proof of bringing life from death, and a literal mirror for the growth and resilience of a faithful community.
How does the mustard seed measure divine justice?
When Luqman instructs his son on the inescapable reality of God's accounting, he measures it by the weight of a single mustard seed. Even if such a microscopic weight were completely hidden away inside a solid rock, or lost in the vastness of the heavens or the earth, God is subtle and aware enough to bring it to light (31:16). This exactitude carries over directly to the Day of Resurrection. On that day, scales of absolute justice are set up so that no soul is wronged in the slightest measure. There, too, a deed weighing no more than a mustard seed will be brought forward for reckoning, as God takes excellent account of all things (21:47).
What happens when the earth cracks open?
The physical germination of a plant is presented as a profound rupture between death and life. The Quran swears by the sky and its recurring rain, and by the earth that cracks open to allow the tender shoot to emerge (86:11-12). This breaking of the soil is a direct divine act; it is God who splits open the seed and the fruit stone, drawing the living from the dead and the dead from the living (6:95). Commenting on this exact verse, as al-Suddi notes (Mawsu'at al-Tafsir al-Ma'thur, 8/ 500), He is the one who splits the seed to bring forth the ear of grain, and splits the stone to bring forth the date palm. This initial splitting transforms a lifeless earth into a source of human sustenance, producing husked grain and fragrant plants (36:33, 55:12). When water is sent down from the sky, it yields greenery and grains stacked one upon another in close-packed rows, flanked by clusters of low-hanging dates, olives, and pomegranates—a complex botanical system offering signs for those who observe their growth and ripening (6:99).
How are believers compared to a planted crop?
The developmental stages of a planted field provide the imagery for the early Muslim community. The Quran states that the followers of Muhammad are pictured in both the Torah and the Gospel as a seed that puts forth its initial shoot, strengthens over time, grows thick, and finally rises tall and independent on its stem (48:29). This steady maturation delights the sowers who planted it, while simultaneously infuriating the disbelievers who are forced to witness this sudden, deeply rooted strength.
This botanical trajectory, from an overlooked speck to a thriving organism, mirrors human origins. Mankind is traced from an initial creation of clay down to descendants formed from an extract of underrated fluid, effectively a human seed (32:7-8). The exact same power that brings the shoots of each plant out of the dead soil, maturing them into heavily laden stalks, promises forgiveness and a great reward to those who believe and do righteous deeds (48:29).

۞ وَعِندَهُۥ مَفَاتِحُ ٱلْغَيْبِ لَا يَعْلَمُهَآ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا فِى ٱلْبَرِّ وَٱلْبَحْرِ ۚ وَمَا تَسْقُطُ مِن وَرَقَةٍ إِلَّا يَعْلَمُهَا وَلَا حَبَّةٍ فِى ظُلُمَـٰتِ ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَا رَطْبٍ وَلَا يَابِسٍ إِلَّا فِى كِتَـٰبٍ مُّبِينٍ
He has the keys to the unseen: no one knows them but Him. He knows all that is in the land and sea. No leaf falls without His knowledge, nor is there a single grain in the darkness of the earth, or anything, fresh or withered, that is not written in a clear Record.
۞ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ فَالِقُ ٱلْحَبِّ وَٱلنَّوَىٰ ۖ يُخْرِجُ ٱلْحَىَّ مِنَ ٱلْمَيِّتِ وَمُخْرِجُ ٱلْمَيِّتِ مِنَ ٱلْحَىِّ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمُ ٱللَّهُ ۖ فَأَنَّىٰ تُؤْفَكُونَ
It is God who splits open the seed and the fruit stone: He brings out the living from the dead and the dead from the living- that is God- so how can you turn away from the truth?
وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنزَلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءً فَأَخْرَجْنَا بِهِۦ نَبَاتَ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ فَأَخْرَجْنَا مِنْهُ خَضِرًا نُّخْرِجُ مِنْهُ حَبًّا مُّتَرَاكِبًا وَمِنَ ٱلنَّخْلِ مِن طَلْعِهَا قِنْوَانٌ دَانِيَةٌ وَجَنَّـٰتٍ مِّنْ أَعْنَابٍ وَٱلزَّيْتُونَ وَٱلرُّمَّانَ مُشْتَبِهًا وَغَيْرَ مُتَشَـٰبِهٍ ۗ ٱنظُرُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰ ثَمَرِهِۦٓ إِذَآ أَثْمَرَ وَيَنْعِهِۦٓ ۚ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكُمْ لَـَٔايَـٰتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ
It is He who sends down water from the sky. With it We produce the shoots of each plant, then bring greenery from it, and from that We bring out grains, one riding on the other in close-packed rows. From the date palm come clusters of low-hanging dates, and there are gardens of vines, olives, and pomegranates, alike yet different. Watch their fruits as they grow and ripen! In all this there are signs for those who would believe.
وَنَضَعُ ٱلْمَوَٰزِينَ ٱلْقِسْطَ لِيَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ فَلَا تُظْلَمُ نَفْسٌ شَيْـًٔا ۖ وَإِن كَانَ مِثْقَالَ حَبَّةٍ مِّنْ خَرْدَلٍ أَتَيْنَا بِهَا ۗ وَكَفَىٰ بِنَا حَـٰسِبِينَ
We will set up scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection so that no one can be wronged in the least, and if there should be even the weight of a mustard seed, We shall bring it out- We take excellent account.
يَـٰبُنَىَّ إِنَّهَآ إِن تَكُ مِثْقَالَ حَبَّةٍ مِّنْ خَرْدَلٍ فَتَكُن فِى صَخْرَةٍ أَوْ فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ أَوْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ يَأْتِ بِهَا ٱللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَطِيفٌ خَبِيرٌ
[And Luqman continued], ‘My son, if even the weight of a mustard seed were hidden in a rock or anywhere in the heavens or earth, God would bring it [to light], for He is all subtle and all aware.
ٱلَّذِىٓ أَحْسَنَ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ ۖ وَبَدَأَ خَلْقَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنِ مِن طِينٍ
who gave everything its perfect form. He first created man from clay,
ثُمَّ جَعَلَ نَسْلَهُۥ مِن سُلَـٰلَةٍ مِّن مَّآءٍ مَّهِينٍ
then made his descendants from an extract of underrated fluid.
وَءَايَةٌ لَّهُمُ ٱلْأَرْضُ ٱلْمَيْتَةُ أَحْيَيْنَـٰهَا وَأَخْرَجْنَا مِنْهَا حَبًّا فَمِنْهُ يَأْكُلُونَ
There is a sign for them in the lifeless earth: We give it life and We produce grain from it for them to eat;
مُّحَمَّدٌ رَّسُولُ ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَٱلَّذِينَ مَعَهُۥٓ أَشِدَّآءُ عَلَى ٱلْكُفَّارِ رُحَمَآءُ بَيْنَهُمْ ۖ تَرَىٰهُمْ رُكَّعًا سُجَّدًا يَبْتَغُونَ فَضْلًا مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرِضْوَٰنًا ۖ سِيمَاهُمْ فِى وُجُوهِهِم مِّنْ أَثَرِ ٱلسُّجُودِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ مَثَلُهُمْ فِى ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةِ ۚ وَمَثَلُهُمْ فِى ٱلْإِنجِيلِ كَزَرْعٍ أَخْرَجَ شَطْـَٔهُۥ فَـَٔازَرَهُۥ فَٱسْتَغْلَظَ فَٱسْتَوَىٰ عَلَىٰ سُوقِهِۦ يُعْجِبُ ٱلزُّرَّاعَ لِيَغِيظَ بِهِمُ ٱلْكُفَّارَ ۗ وَعَدَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ مِنْهُم مَّغْفِرَةً وَأَجْرًا عَظِيمًۢا
Muhammad is the Messenger of God. Those who follow him are harsh towards the disbelievers and compassionate towards each other. You see them kneeling and prostrating, seeking God’s bounty and His good pleasure: on their faces they bear the marks of their prostrations. This is how they are pictured in the Torah and the Gospel: like a seed that puts forth its shoot, becomes strong, grows thick, and rises on its stem to the delight of its sowers. So God infuriates the disbelievers through them; God promises forgiveness and a great reward to those who believe and do righteous deeds.
وَٱلْحَبُّ ذُو ٱلْعَصْفِ وَٱلرَّيْحَانُ
its husked grain, its fragrant plants.
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلرَّجْعِ
By the sky and its recurring rain,
وَٱلْأَرْضِ ذَاتِ ٱلصَّدْعِ
by the earth that cracks open!
إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوْلٌ فَصْلٌ
This is truly a decisive statement;
