Scribe

When contracting a debt for a stated term, the Quran places a human writer at the center of the agreement, demanding that a scribe record the terms with absolute equity (2:282). The act of writing is not treated merely as a clerical task, but as a religious duty rooted in divine instruction. A scribe is commanded not to refuse this service, but to "write as God has taught him," ensuring that future disputes are prevented and memory is anchored in physical proof.
What are a scribe's responsibilities in financial agreements?
In the context of commerce and loans, the scribe's primary duty is exactitude. The debtor dictates the terms, and the scribe must capture them without diminishing the debt at all (2:282). If the debtor is weak, feeble-minded, or otherwise unable to articulate the terms, the responsibility shifts to their guardian, who must dictate justly to the scribe.
The Quran insists that the scribe must not disdain writing down the debt, regardless of whether the amount is small or large, along with the precise time it falls due. This meticulous documentation is described as more equitable in the sight of God, more reliable as legal testimony, and the most effective way to prevent doubts from arising between the parties later (2:282). The only exception granted is for immediate, on-the-spot trade where merchandise is handed over directly; in such cases, there is no blame if a scribe is not used, though witnesses are still required to be present.
How are scribes protected from undue pressure?
While the scribe has an obligation to assist, the Quran strictly forbids the transacting parties from mistreating or coercing him. The text warns, "let no harm be done to either scribe or witness, for if you did cause them harm, it would be a crime on your part" (2:282).
Classical scholars closely examined the specific nature of this harm. As al-Tabari notes (Jami al-bayan, 6/91), the phrasing of the Arabic can technically mean either harm caused by the scribe, or harm inflicted upon him. Interpreting the latter, Ibn Abbas explained that a person should not approach a scribe who is occupied with his own affairs and demand immediate service, using the Quranic command to write as a tool to pressure or inconvenience him (Ahkam al-Quran li-al-Kiya al-Harrasi, 1/261). The obligation is mutual: the scribe writes faithfully, but the community respects his time and safety. When practical limitations arise, such as being on a journey where no scribe can be found, the written record is replaced by handing over a tangible item as security (2:283).
Who are the scribes of the revelation?
Beyond earthly commerce, the title of scribe elevates to a celestial role. The recording of human debts requires human equity, but the preservation of divine revelation is entrusted to a different class of writers. The Quran describes its own verses as being preserved on honored, exalted, and pure pages (80:13-14). These sacred texts are not subjected to the frailties of human memory or the weaknesses of earthly dictation.
The act of writing bridges the administration of daily life and the preservation of the divine. In both spheres, the scribe carries a profound trust that demands fidelity to the dictated word. The earthly scribe guards the rights of the weak and prevents the fracturing of human relationships through equitable documentation. Ultimately, the purity of the recorded word culminates in the heavens, resting upon exalted pages set down by the hands of noble and virtuous scribes (80:15-16).

You who believe, when you contract a debt for a stated term, put it down in writing: have a scribe write it down justly between you. No scribe should refuse to write: let him write as God has taught him, let the debtor dictate, and let him fear God, his Lord, and not diminish [the debt] at all. If the debtor is feeble-minded, weak, or unable to dictate, then let his guardian dictate justly. Call in two men as witnesses. If two men are not there, then call one man and two women out of those you approve as witnesses, so that if one of the two women should forget the other can remind her. Let the witnesses not refuse when they are summoned. Do not disdain to write the debt down, be it small or large, along with the time it falls due: this way is more equitable in God’s eyes, more reliable as testimony, and more likely to prevent doubts arising between you. But if the merchandise is there and you hand it over, there is no blame on you if you do not write it down. Have witnesses present whenever you trade with one another, and let no harm be done to either scribe or witness, for if you did cause them harm, it would be a crime on your part. Be mindful of God, and He will teach you: He has full knowledge of everything.
If you are on a journey, and cannot find a scribe, something should be handed over as security, but if you decide to trust one another, then let the one who is trusted fulfil his trust; let him be mindful of God, his Lord. Do not conceal evidence: anyone who does so has a sinful heart, and God is fully aware of everything you do.
