Sâmiri and the Golden Calf
15 verses
While Moses hurried ahead of the Children of Israel to meet his Lord, a crisis unfolded at their encampment. Moses explained his haste as an act of devotion, stating, "I rushed to You, Lord, to please You" (20:84). But God interrupted this exchange with a severe revelation: the community had been tested in his absence, and a figure known as the Samiri had successfully led them astray (20:85).
How was the calf constructed? When Moses returned and confronted his people, their defense centered on a physical burden. They insisted they had not deliberately broken their word, but were weighed down by the heavy jewelry belonging to the people (20:87). Seeking to rid themselves of this weight, they threw the ornaments into a fire.
The Samiri added his own contribution to the flames, manipulating the molten metal into a specific shape. He produced the image of a calf that actually emitted a lowing sound (20:88). Relying on this auditory spectacle, the Samiri and his followers presented the idol to the Israelites with a bold theological claim. They declared that this metal calf was not only their true god, but also the god of Moses, asserting that Moses had simply forgotten his Lord and gone looking for Him elsewhere.
Where was Aaron during the idolatry? Moses had left his brother Aaron in charge of the Israelites, and the verses clarify that Aaron recognized the deception immediately. He confronted the community, warning them that the calf was merely a test. He reminded them that their true Lord is the Lord of Mercy, and he commanded them to follow his leadership and obey his orders (20:90). The people flatly rejected him, vowing that they would never give up their devotion to the calf until Moses returned (20:91).
Unaware of this resistance until he descended, Moses directed his initial fury at his brother. He seized Aaron by the hair and beard, demanding to know what had prevented him from abandoning the idolaters and coming after him, accusing him of direct disobedience (20:92-93). Aaron pleaded with his brother, addressing him intimately as the "son of my mother" and asking him to let go of his beard and hair (20:94). Aaron explained his desperate dilemma: he was afraid that if he left the camp or forced a physical fracture, Moses would return and accuse him of causing division among the Children of Israel and failing to heed his previous instructions.
The fundamental flaw of the idol Moses stood before his people both angry and deeply aggrieved. He interrogated them over their sudden betrayal, asking if God had not made them a gracious promise, and whether his absence had really been too long for them to endure (20:86). He demanded to know if they actively desired for anger to fall upon them from their Lord, prompting them to break their word. The Quran dismantles the worship of the calf not just as a failure of loyalty, but as a failure of basic reason, asking how the people could fall before a crafted image without realizing that it gave them no answer, and that it possessed absolutely no power to harm or benefit them (20:89).

۞ وَمَآ أَعْجَلَكَ عَن قَوْمِكَ يَـٰمُوسَىٰ
[God said], ‘Moses, what has made you come ahead of your people in such haste?’
قَالَ هُمْ أُو۟لَآءِ عَلَىٰٓ أَثَرِى وَعَجِلْتُ إِلَيْكَ رَبِّ لِتَرْضَىٰ
and he said, ‘They are following in my footsteps. I rushed to You, Lord, to please You,’
قَالَ فَإِنَّا قَدْ فَتَنَّا قَوْمَكَ مِنۢ بَعْدِكَ وَأَضَلَّهُمُ ٱلسَّامِرِىُّ
but God said, ‘We have tested your people in your absence: the Samiri has led them astray.’
فَرَجَعَ مُوسَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِۦ غَضْبَـٰنَ أَسِفًا ۚ قَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ أَلَمْ يَعِدْكُمْ رَبُّكُمْ وَعْدًا حَسَنًا ۚ أَفَطَالَ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْعَهْدُ أَمْ أَرَدتُّمْ أَن يَحِلَّ عَلَيْكُمْ غَضَبٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ فَأَخْلَفْتُم مَّوْعِدِى
Moses returned to his people, angry and aggrieved. He said, ‘My people, did your Lord not make you a gracious promise? Was my absence too long for you? Did you want anger to fall on you from your Lord and so broke your word to me?’
قَالُوا۟ مَآ أَخْلَفْنَا مَوْعِدَكَ بِمَلْكِنَا وَلَـٰكِنَّا حُمِّلْنَآ أَوْزَارًا مِّن زِينَةِ ٱلْقَوْمِ فَقَذَفْنَـٰهَا فَكَذَٰلِكَ أَلْقَى ٱلسَّامِرِىُّ
They said, ‘We did not break our word to you deliberately. We were burdened with the weight of people’s jewellery, so we threw it [into the fire], and the Samiri did the same,’
فَأَخْرَجَ لَهُمْ عِجْلًا جَسَدًا لَّهُۥ خُوَارٌ فَقَالُوا۟ هَـٰذَآ إِلَـٰهُكُمْ وَإِلَـٰهُ مُوسَىٰ فَنَسِىَ
but he [used the molten jewellery to] produce an image of a calf which made a lowing sound, and they said, ‘This is your god and Moses’ god, but he has forgotten.’
أَفَلَا يَرَوْنَ أَلَّا يَرْجِعُ إِلَيْهِمْ قَوْلًا وَلَا يَمْلِكُ لَهُمْ ضَرًّا وَلَا نَفْعًا
Did they not see that [the calf] gave them no answer, that it had no power to harm or benefit them?
وَلَقَدْ قَالَ لَهُمْ هَـٰرُونُ مِن قَبْلُ يَـٰقَوْمِ إِنَّمَا فُتِنتُم بِهِۦ ۖ وَإِنَّ رَبَّكُمُ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ فَٱتَّبِعُونِى وَأَطِيعُوٓا۟ أَمْرِى
Aaron did say to them, ‘My people, this calf is a test for you. Your true Lord is the Lord of Mercy, so follow me and obey my orders,’
قَالُوا۟ لَن نَّبْرَحَ عَلَيْهِ عَـٰكِفِينَ حَتَّىٰ يَرْجِعَ إِلَيْنَا مُوسَىٰ
but they replied, ‘We shall not give up our devotion to it until Moses returns to us.’
قَالَ يَـٰهَـٰرُونُ مَا مَنَعَكَ إِذْ رَأَيْتَهُمْ ضَلُّوٓا۟
Moses said, ‘When you realized they had gone astray, what prevented you, Aaron,
أَلَّا تَتَّبِعَنِ ۖ أَفَعَصَيْتَ أَمْرِى
from coming after me? How could you disobey my orders?’
قَالَ يَبْنَؤُمَّ لَا تَأْخُذْ بِلِحْيَتِى وَلَا بِرَأْسِىٓ ۖ إِنِّى خَشِيتُ أَن تَقُولَ فَرَّقْتَ بَيْنَ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ وَلَمْ تَرْقُبْ قَوْلِى
He said, ‘Son of my mother- let go of my beard and my hair!- I was afraid you would say, “You have caused division among the children of Israel and have not heeded what I said.”’
قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكَ يَـٰسَـٰمِرِىُّ
Moses said, ‘And what was the matter with you, Samiri?’
قَالَ بَصُرْتُ بِمَا لَمْ يَبْصُرُوا۟ بِهِۦ فَقَبَضْتُ قَبْضَةً مِّنْ أَثَرِ ٱلرَّسُولِ فَنَبَذْتُهَا وَكَذَٰلِكَ سَوَّلَتْ لِى نَفْسِى
He replied, ‘I saw something they did not; I took in some of the teachings of the Messenger but tossed them aside: my soul prompted me to do what I did.’
قَالَ فَٱذْهَبْ فَإِنَّ لَكَ فِى ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ أَن تَقُولَ لَا مِسَاسَ ۖ وَإِنَّ لَكَ مَوْعِدًا لَّن تُخْلَفَهُۥ ۖ وَٱنظُرْ إِلَىٰٓ إِلَـٰهِكَ ٱلَّذِى ظَلْتَ عَلَيْهِ عَاكِفًا ۖ لَّنُحَرِّقَنَّهُۥ ثُمَّ لَنَنسِفَنَّهُۥ فِى ٱلْيَمِّ نَسْفًا
Moses said, ‘Get away from here! Your lot in this life is to say, “Do not touch me,” but you have an appointment from which there is no escape. Look at your god which you have kept on worshipping- we shall grind it down and scatter it into the sea.
