When adversaries are consumed by the "fury of ignorance," the divine response is not an equal fury, but a sudden, steadying calm sent directly into the chest. As Ibn al-Jawzi notes (Zad al-Masir, 1/ 224), this sakinah is a condition that people settle into and find rest in when it arrives, manifesting as a profound dignity or mercy. It serves as an anchor, physically and spiritually separating those who obey God from the chaos surrounding them.
Where does this calm come from? Al-Raghib al-Isfahani points out (Al-Mufradat, 417) that the linguistic root of sakinah is shared with sukkan—the rudder that steadies a ship in turbulent waters—and sikkin, the knife that brings physical stillness. He notes that classical scholars sometimes described it as an angelic presence that directly secures the believer's heart. The Quran presents it as a concrete gift descending from God, frequently accompanied by unseen intervention. During the era of the Israelites, this tangible tranquility was carried within the Ark of the Covenant. It was placed there by God alongside the preserved relics of Moses and Aaron, borne physically by angels as a definitive sign of divine authority (2:248).
When does God send tranquility? It descends precisely at the threshold of panic, isolation, or violent conflict. When the Prophet was driven from his home and cornered in a cave with his companion, the immediate threat of capture was met with a simple reassurance: "Do not worry, God is with us." Immediately following this statement, God brought down His calm upon the Prophet, deployed forces invisible to the human eye, and brought down the plans of the disbelievers (9:40). This exact pattern occurred openly on the battlefield; God sent His calm down to the Messenger and the believers, releasing unseen armies to punish those who opposed them (9:26).
It also arrives in moments of profound, quiet devotion. When the early believers swore allegiance to the Prophet under the tree, God knew exactly what was resting in their hearts. Because of this internal sincerity, He sent tranquility down to them and rewarded their commitment with an immediate, speedy triumph (48:18).
How does tranquility change the heart? The descent of sakinah fundamentally alters a person's internal state, serving as the direct antidote to external hostility. While opponents harbor fury in their hearts, the believers are anchored by a calmness that makes binding their promise to obey God, establishing what is most fitting and appropriate for them (48:26). This stillness is never a passive emptiness, but an active, structural reinforcement of conviction.
Instead of simply removing a threat, God alters the believer's capacity to withstand it. He makes this tranquility descend into their hearts specifically to add faith to their existing faith, proving that human plans invariably fall, while the forces of the heavens and earth belong entirely to Him, the all-knowing and all-wise (48:4).

وَقَالَ لَهُمْ نَبِيُّهُمْ إِنَّ ءَايَةَ مُلْكِهِۦٓ أَن يَأْتِيَكُمُ ٱلتَّابُوتُ فِيهِ سَكِينَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَبَقِيَّةٌ مِّمَّا تَرَكَ ءَالُ مُوسَىٰ وَءَالُ هَـٰرُونَ تَحْمِلُهُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ ۚ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
Their prophet said to them, ‘The sign of his authority will be that the Ark [of the Covenant] will come to you. In it there will be [the gift of] tranquillity from your Lord and relics of the followers of Moses and Aaron, carried by the angels. There is a sign in this for you if you believe.’
ثُمَّ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُۥ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِۦ وَعَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَأَنزَلَ جُنُودًا لَّمْ تَرَوْهَا وَعَذَّبَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ۚ وَذَٰلِكَ جَزَآءُ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ
Then God sent His calm down to His Messenger and the believers, and He sent down invisible forces. He punished the disbelievers- this is what the disbelievers deserve-
إِلَّا تَنصُرُوهُ فَقَدْ نَصَرَهُ ٱللَّهُ إِذْ أَخْرَجَهُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ثَانِىَ ٱثْنَيْنِ إِذْ هُمَا فِى ٱلْغَارِ إِذْ يَقُولُ لِصَـٰحِبِهِۦ لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَنَا ۖ فَأَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُۥ عَلَيْهِ وَأَيَّدَهُۥ بِجُنُودٍ لَّمْ تَرَوْهَا وَجَعَلَ كَلِمَةَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ٱلسُّفْلَىٰ ۗ وَكَلِمَةُ ٱللَّهِ هِىَ ٱلْعُلْيَا ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ
Even if you do not help the Prophet, God helped him when the disbelievers drove him out: when the two of them were in the cave, he [Muhammad] said to his companion, ‘Do not worry, God is with us,’ and God sent His calm down to him, aided him with forces invisible to you, and brought down the disbelievers’ plan. God’s plan is higher: God is almighty and wise.
هُوَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنزَلَ ٱلسَّكِينَةَ فِى قُلُوبِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ لِيَزْدَادُوٓا۟ إِيمَـٰنًا مَّعَ إِيمَـٰنِهِمْ ۗ وَلِلَّهِ جُنُودُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا
It was He who made His tranquillity descend into the hearts of the believers, to add faith to their faith––the forces of the heavens and earth belong to God; He is all knowing and all wise––
۞ لَّقَدْ رَضِىَ ٱللَّهُ عَنِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِذْ يُبَايِعُونَكَ تَحْتَ ٱلشَّجَرَةِ فَعَلِمَ مَا فِى قُلُوبِهِمْ فَأَنزَلَ ٱلسَّكِينَةَ عَلَيْهِمْ وَأَثَـٰبَهُمْ فَتْحًا قَرِيبًا
God was pleased with the believers when they swore allegiance to you [Prophet] under the tree: He knew what was in their hearts and so He sent tranquillity down to them and rewarded them with a speedy triumph
إِذْ جَعَلَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ فِى قُلُوبِهِمُ ٱلْحَمِيَّةَ حَمِيَّةَ ٱلْجَـٰهِلِيَّةِ فَأَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُۥ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِۦ وَعَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَأَلْزَمَهُمْ كَلِمَةَ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ وَكَانُوٓا۟ أَحَقَّ بِهَا وَأَهْلَهَا ۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمًا
While the disbelievers had fury in their hearts- the fury of ignorance- God sent His tranquillity down on to His Messenger and the believers and made binding on them [their] promise to obey God, for that was more appropriate and fitting for them. God has full knowledge of all things.
