Showing off

8 verses

A heavy rain washing a rock completely bare of its thin layer of earth is the Quran's striking image of charity performed for an audience (2:264). The act of showing off—known in Arabic as riya, which Al-Wahidi defines as displaying what is beautiful to be seen while concealing what is ugly (al-Tafsir al-Basit, 10/186)—hollows out outwardly good deeds. Rather than a mere character flaw, performing acts of worship or generosity solely to gain human admiration is categorized as a form of minor idolatry, as noted by Al-Baghawi (Tafsir al-Baghawi, 5/213).

How does showing off affect acts of worship?

The Quran frequently links the desire to be seen with a fundamental emptiness in ritual worship. A severe warning is directed at those who perform the physical acts of prayer but remain disconnected from its purpose: "So woe to those who pray, but are heedless of their prayer; those who are all show" (107:4-6). This outward performance lacks internal conviction. When describing hypocrites, the text notes they approach their prayers sluggishly, standing up only to be observed by others, while remembering God very little in the process (4:142). The physical act occurs, but the attention is directed entirely toward the surrounding observers rather than the Creator. Ibn Uthaymin clarifies that the term riya specifically describes physical actions performed to be seen by others, distinguishing it from sum'ah, which relates to words spoken to be heard (Tafsir al-Uthaymin: Al-Ahzab, 145).

What happens to wealth spent for public approval?

Spending wealth to build a public reputation actively nullifies the value of the charity. The Quran commands believers not to cancel out their charitable deeds by following them with reminders or hurtful words, comparing this behavior directly to a person "who spends his wealth only to be seen by people, not believing in God and the Last Day" (2:264). Because the initial intention was anchored in securing public praise, the giver receives no spiritual reward. The text further identifies this behavior alongside those who are miserly and hide the bounty God has given them, warning of a humiliating torment (4:37). Spending for the sake of an audience is framed as an alliance with deception; those who distribute their wealth to show off while rejecting belief in the Last Day are described as having taken Satan as an evil companion (4:38).

How does conceit impact collective action?

Beyond individual acts of prayer or charity, the desire for public admiration corrupts collective behavior. The Quran warns believers against imitating those who march out of their homes full of conceit, motivated by the desire to show off to the public while actively barring others from the way of God (8:47). This public posturing is inherently destructive to the community. Classical commentators recognized this subtle form of sabotage; quoting the early exegete Mujahid, Mawsu'at al-Tafsir al-Mathur notes that those described in the Quran as plotting evil deeds are specifically the people of riya, and their plotting is destined to perish (18/328).

The mechanism of showing off fundamentally severs a deed from divine acceptance. By directing an act of worship toward a human audience, the performer exchanges eternal recompense for temporary praise. When the heavy rain finally falls, the thin layer of earth is washed entirely away, leaving the rock underneath completely bare (2:264).

2:264 Al-Baqarah

You who believe, do not cancel out your charitable deeds with reminders and hurtful words, like someone who spends his wealth only to be seen by people, not believing in God and the Last Day. Such a person is like a rock with earth on it: heavy rain falls and leaves it completely bare. Such people get no rewards for their works: God does not guide the disbelievers.

4:37 An-Nisa

who are miserly and order other people to be the same, hiding the bounty God has given them. We have prepared a humiliating torment for such ungrateful people.

4:38 An-Nisa

[Nor does He like those] who spend their wealth to show off, who do not believe in Him or the Last Day. Whoever has Satan as his companion has an evil companion!

4:142 An-Nisa

The hypocrites try to deceive God, but it is He who causes them to be deceived. When they stand up to pray, they do so sluggishly, showing off in front of people, and remember God only a little,

8:47 Al-Anfal

Do not be like those who came out of their homes full of conceit, showing off to people, and barring others from the way of God- God has full knowledge of all that they do.

107:4 Al-Ma'un

So woe to those who pray

107:5 Al-Ma'un

but are heedless of their prayer;

107:6 Al-Ma'un

those who are all show
