Regret

Watching a raven scratch the ground to hide its dead, a man realizes he lacks the basic sense of a bird to cover his brother’s corpse. "Woe is me!" he cries out, wishing he had at least acted like the raven, before being overcome by remorse (5:31). This moment establishes the baseline for remorse: a piercing recognition of an act that cannot be undone. Yet, as Muhammad Abu Zahra notes, such remorse does not automatically erase the sin, even if it is the first step toward repentance (Zahrat al-Tafasir, 4/2134). The text sharply divides the sorrow that prompts course correction in this life from the futile anguish that arrives when consequence is already locked in.

How do hasty actions trigger remorse? In the immediate, physical world, the text often ties regret to irreversible destruction or rushed judgment. When a community rejected their prophet and hamstrung the miraculous she-camel, the dawn brought an immediate realization of what they had provoked: "In the morning they had cause to regret it" (26:157). To prevent this sudden, self-inflicted damage on a social level, believers are explicitly commanded to verify any news brought by a troublemaker. Acting on unchecked information risks wronging others unwittingly, guaranteeing that the perpetrator will later regret what they have done (49:6).

The linguistic structure of Quranic repentance distinguishes the emotional pang of guilt from practical change. Musa'id al-Tayyar explains that true repentance involves an active turning back and a firm resolve to abandon the sin. Therefore, regret is a necessary consequence attached to repentance, rather than the entirety of the solution itself (Al-Tafsir al-Lughawi, 237). Without that physical turning back, regret remains a mere internal state of the perverse at heart, who rush to align with hypocritical factions out of fear that fortune might turn against them. When God brings about a triumph or an event of His own making, they are left to rue the secrets they harbored inside (5:52).

What happens when realization comes too late? The most severe depictions of remorse belong to the Hereafter, where internal sorrow replaces outward defiance. Those who use their wealth to obstruct the path of God will continue spending it, but the text promises this very expenditure will become a source of intense agony before they are overcome and herded toward Hell (8:36). A simple, heavy decree hangs over those who dismiss the warnings: "Soon they will be filled with regret" (23:40).

By the time the final judgment arrives, the vocal arrogance of the world collapses into absolute, mute despair. The oppressed and their former masters will face each other, with the followers blaming the leaders for their constant scheming night and day to make them set up rivals to God (34:33). There is no bartering at this stage. If a soul that had committed evil possessed everything on earth, it would gladly offer the entirety of it as a ransom (10:54). Instead of the defiant arguments they once voiced, they will conceal their remorse as judgment is carried out with exact justice, and heavy iron collars are fastened around the disbelievers’ necks (34:33).
