After Noah lived among his people for fifty years short of a thousand, enduring their accusations that he was a liar, the era ended in overwhelming destruction (29:14, 7:64). Despite nearly a millennium of patience and forewarning, the society remained wilfully blind, prompting a judgment that separated humanity into two distinct groups. God saved Noah and those with him on the Ark, letting them survive, while deliberately drowning those who denied the revelations (10:73). The cataclysm was not a random natural disaster, but a targeted response to persistent evil, designed to make the drowned society an example to all people who might later reject their own messengers (25:37).
How did the floodwaters rise?
The inundation did not originate from a single earthly source. God describes opening the gates of the sky with torrential downpours while simultaneously bursting the earth with gushing springs (54:11-12). These two massive bodies of water met by a precise, preordained command. Just before the earth surrendered to the deluge, Noah received the instruction to load the Ark. He took aboard a pair of each animal species, his own family—excluding those against whom the sentence of destruction had already been passed—and the believers, who were very few in number despite his centuries of preaching (11:40). The vessel's physical survival in the violent currents relied entirely on divine mercy rather than human engineering, as Noah told his passengers, "In the name of God it shall sail and anchor. My God is most forgiving and merciful" (11:41).
Was there any refuge from the waves?
The sheer scale of the water transformed the landscape, with the Ark sailing on waves that loomed like mountains (11:42). In the midst of this terror, a deeply personal tragedy unfolds between a father and his disbelieving child. Noah called out to his son, urging him to come aboard the ship and not remain behind with the rejecters. Relying on physical elevation rather than faith, the son answered, "I will seek refuge on a mountain to save me from the water" (11:43). Noah reminded him that on that day, no natural height or human effort could provide shelter from God's command; survival was strictly reserved for those who received His mercy. Before the conversation could continue, a massive wave crashed between them, cutting the father and son off from each other and sealing the young man's fate among the drowned (11:43).
What happened after the water subsided?
Just as the flood began with direct commands to the natural world, it ended with them. A divine directive was issued: "Earth, swallow up your water, and sky, hold back" (11:44). The torrential rains ceased, the floodwaters retreated into the ground, and the command was completely fulfilled. For the rejecters, the drowning was only the beginning of their punishment; they were sent straight to Hell for their evildoings, finding no one to protect or help them against God (71:25).
With the believers saved and allowed to survive, the physical slate of the earth was wiped clean of the society that had mocked the warnings. The judgment finalized not just in the receding of the waters, but in the permanent decree spoken over the ruins of the rejecters. The Ark settled safely upon Mount Judi, and it was said, "Gone are those evildoing people!" (11:44).

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَنجَيْنَـٰهُ وَٱلَّذِينَ مَعَهُۥ فِى ٱلْفُلْكِ وَأَغْرَقْنَا ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَوْمًا عَمِينَ
but they called him a liar. We saved him, and those who were with him, on the Ark and We drowned those who rejected Our revelations- they were wilfully blind.
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥ فِى ٱلْفُلْكِ وَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْ خَلَـٰٓئِفَ وَأَغْرَقْنَا ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا ۖ فَٱنظُرْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلْمُنذَرِينَ
But they rejected him. We saved him and those with him on the Ark and let them survive; and We drowned those who denied Our revelations- see what was the end of those who were forewarned!
حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا جَآءَ أَمْرُنَا وَفَارَ ٱلتَّنُّورُ قُلْنَا ٱحْمِلْ فِيهَا مِن كُلٍّ زَوْجَيْنِ ٱثْنَيْنِ وَأَهْلَكَ إِلَّا مَن سَبَقَ عَلَيْهِ ٱلْقَوْلُ وَمَنْ ءَامَنَ ۚ وَمَآ ءَامَنَ مَعَهُۥٓ إِلَّا قَلِيلٌ
When Our command came, and water gushed up out of the earth, We said, ‘Place on board this Ark a pair of each species, and your own family- except those against whom the sentence has already been passed- and those who have believed,’ though only a few believed with him.
۞ وَقَالَ ٱرْكَبُوا۟ فِيهَا بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ مَجْر۪ىٰهَا وَمُرْسَىٰهَآ ۚ إِنَّ رَبِّى لَغَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
He said, ‘Board the Ark. In the name of God it shall sail and anchor. My God is most forgiving and merciful.’
وَهِىَ تَجْرِى بِهِمْ فِى مَوْجٍ كَٱلْجِبَالِ وَنَادَىٰ نُوحٌ ٱبْنَهُۥ وَكَانَ فِى مَعْزِلٍ يَـٰبُنَىَّ ٱرْكَب مَّعَنَا وَلَا تَكُن مَّعَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ
It sailed with them on waves like mountains, and Noah called out to his son, who stayed behind, ‘Come aboard with us, my son, do not stay with the disbelievers.’
قَالَ سَـَٔاوِىٓ إِلَىٰ جَبَلٍ يَعْصِمُنِى مِنَ ٱلْمَآءِ ۚ قَالَ لَا عَاصِمَ ٱلْيَوْمَ مِنْ أَمْرِ ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا مَن رَّحِمَ ۚ وَحَالَ بَيْنَهُمَا ٱلْمَوْجُ فَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُغْرَقِينَ
But he replied, ‘I will seek refuge on a mountain to save me from the water.’ Noah said, ‘Today there is no refuge from God’s command, except for those on whom He has mercy.’ The waves cut them off from each other and he was among the drowned.
وَقِيلَ يَـٰٓأَرْضُ ٱبْلَعِى مَآءَكِ وَيَـٰسَمَآءُ أَقْلِعِى وَغِيضَ ٱلْمَآءُ وَقُضِىَ ٱلْأَمْرُ وَٱسْتَوَتْ عَلَى ٱلْجُودِىِّ ۖ وَقِيلَ بُعْدًا لِّلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
Then it was said, ‘Earth, swallow up your water, and sky, hold back,’ and the water subsided, the command was fulfilled. The Ark settled on Mount Judi, and it was said, ‘Gone are those evildoing people!’
وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ لَّمَّا كَذَّبُوا۟ ٱلرُّسُلَ أَغْرَقْنَـٰهُمْ وَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْ لِلنَّاسِ ءَايَةً ۖ وَأَعْتَدْنَا لِلظَّـٰلِمِينَ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا
The people of Noah, too: when they rejected their messengers, We drowned them and made them an example to all people. We have prepared a painful torment for the evildoers,
وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِۦ فَلَبِثَ فِيهِمْ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ إِلَّا خَمْسِينَ عَامًا فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلطُّوفَانُ وَهُمْ ظَـٰلِمُونَ
We sent Noah out to his people. He lived among them for fifty years short of a thousand but when the Flood overwhelmed them they were still doing evil.
فَفَتَحْنَآ أَبْوَٰبَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ بِمَآءٍ مُّنْهَمِرٍ
So We opened the gates of the sky with torrential water,
وَفَجَّرْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ عُيُونًا فَٱلْتَقَى ٱلْمَآءُ عَلَىٰٓ أَمْرٍ قَدْ قُدِرَ
burst the earth with gushing springs: the waters met for a preordained purpose.
مِّمَّا خَطِيٓـَٔـٰتِهِمْ أُغْرِقُوا۟ فَأُدْخِلُوا۟ نَارًا فَلَمْ يَجِدُوا۟ لَهُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ أَنصَارًا
They were drowned and sent to Hell for their evildoings: they found no one to help them against God.
