praying for a child

When Zachariah was entrusted with the care of Mary, he witnessed a level of divine care that reshaped his own expectations of what he could ask from God. Her Lord had graciously accepted her and caused her to grow in goodness (3:37). As her guardian, Zachariah would regularly enter her sanctuary to check on her, only to find her already supplied with provisions. When he asked Mary how she came to possess these things, she replied that they were from God, who provides limitlessly for whoever He will (3:37). Hearing this declaration of boundless provision triggered an immediate response in the elderly prophet. Standing in that very spot, aware of his own lack of an heir, he prayed for a child. He asked his Lord to grant him virtuous offspring from His own grace, framing his request with the firm belief that God hears every prayer (3:38).

How does the response arrive?

The answer to this plea was instantaneous. While Zachariah was still standing in the sanctuary engaged in prayer, angels called out to him with glad tidings (3:39). The news they delivered was highly specific, granting him not just any child, but a son named John. Furthermore, the angels detailed the spiritual caliber of the boy before he was even conceived. John would be a prophet and one of the righteous; he would grow up to be noble and chaste, and his life would serve to confirm a Word from God (3:39). This detailed response highlights how a sincere request for virtuous offspring is met with a precise, multifaceted guarantee of character and prophetic responsibility.

Facing the reality of old age and infertility

Even though Zachariah had initiated the prayer, the reality of its fulfillment left him stunned. Confronted with the actual news of an impending son, he questioned the mechanics of how it could happen. He asked his Lord directly how a child could be born to him, pointing out two stark physiological barriers: he was already an old man, and his wife was barren (3:40). The response he received did not offer a medical or biological explanation. Instead, an angel reaffirmed the absolute nature of divine capability, stating simply that it would be so, because God does whatever He wills (3:40). The very same limitless power that placed provisions in Mary's sanctuary would bypass the couple's age and infertility.

Still absorbing the weight of this impending miracle, the prophet asked his Lord to grant him a sign. In response, an angel informed him that his sign would be a period of enforced silence; for three entire days, he would be unable to speak to anyone, having to rely instead on motions to interact (3:41). Stripped of his normal ability to converse with humanity, he was directed to focus entirely inward. During those days of silence, he was instructed to remember his Lord frequently and to occupy himself with celebrating God's glory at both the fall of evening and the break of dawn (3:41).
