asking for it for wrong reasons

5 verses

When men approached the Prophet Muhammad asking to be excused from striving alongside him, their polite requests for exemption masked a severe crisis of faith. The Quran addresses these individuals who sought official permission to stay home, exposing the reality that their pleas were not based on genuine necessity. Instead of viewing their evasion as a simple lack of participation, the text frames the very act of asking for these exemptions as a symptom of a hidden, internal collapse.

Why do people make excuses to stay behind? The requests for exemption were initially met with leniency by the Prophet. Yet, God directly addresses this allowance, asking the Prophet why he gave them permission to stay at home before it had become clear which of them spoke the truth and which were liars (9:43). The Quran clarifies that a believer does not typically seek a way out of a clear obligation. Seeking official permission to avoid striving is identified as the behavior of those who lack faith in God and the Last Day (9:45). Their requests are driven by hearts full of doubt, causing them to waver continuously rather than step forward with conviction.

Can avoiding duty keep a person out of trouble? One of the specific excuses recorded in the verses attempts to reframe evasion as a desire for personal peace. Some individuals told the Prophet, "Give me permission to stay at home: do not trouble me" (9:49). They presented their absence as a simple necessity to avoid hardship or distress. The text immediately dismantles this logic, stating that by making such a request to avoid exertion, they have already fallen into profound trouble. Their attempt to sidestep the command guarantees a far more severe consequence, as Hell will ultimately engulf the disbelievers.

What happens to those who are capable but refuse? The blame falls most heavily on those who possess the material means to act but actively campaign to opt out. When a sura was revealed commanding people to believe in God and strive hard alongside His Messenger, it was the wealthy who stepped forward to ask for exemptions (9:86). They specifically asked the Prophet to "allow us to stay behind with the others," deliberately choosing the company of those who were legitimately unable to participate.

The insistence on securing a comfortable exemption reveals a fatal inversion of priorities. Those who were fully capable used their status not to support the Messenger, but to lobby for the right to remain inactive. The Quran states unequivocally that the ones open to blame are those who asked for this exemption despite their wealth (9:93). By actively preferring to sit back with those who stay behind, they courted a permanent spiritual consequence. For their refusal to strive when called upon, God has sealed their hearts: they do not understand.

9:43 At-Tawbah

God forgive you [Prophet]! Why did you give them permission to stay at home before it had become clear to you which of them spoke the truth and which were liars?

9:45 At-Tawbah

only those who do not have faith in God and the Last Day ask your permission to stay at home: they have doubt in their hearts and so they waver.

9:49 At-Tawbah

Some of them said, ‘Give me permission to stay at home: do not trouble me.’ They are already in trouble: Hell will engulf the disbelievers.

9:86 At-Tawbah

When a sura is revealed [saying], ‘Believe in God and strive hard alongside His Messenger,’ their wealthy ask your permission [to be exempt], saying, ‘Allow us to stay behind with the others’:

9:93 At-Tawbah

The ones open to blame are those who asked you for exemption despite their wealth, and who preferred to be with those who stay behind. God has sealed their hearts: they do not understand.
