Desire

الشهوة

9 verses

Gold, silver treasures piled up high, women, children, horses with fine markings, livestock, and sprawling farmland are intentionally made alluring to human beings (3:14). These objects of attraction are framed not as accidental distractions, but as the core joys of earthly life. Yet, this intense pull sets up the primary internal conflict described in the text: the friction between the immediate gratification of worldly love and the absolute reality that God holds the best place of return (3:14).

Why did God create us with these urges?

The presence of shahwa (desire or lust) is depicted as a defining feature of the human test, separating mortal struggle from angelic obedience. As al-Tabari notes (Jami al-bayan, 2/ 428), when the angels questioned why God did not simply destroy the sinful earth, God revealed to them that if He had placed desire and Satan in their own hearts, they would have acted exactly as humans do. The inclination toward wealth, intimacy, and status is a deliberately installed mechanism. The test lies in how one navigates it. While God wishes to turn toward humanity with forgiveness, those who entirely surrender to their lusts actively want others to go far astray with them (4:27).

What happens when desires take over?

Unchecked desire acts as a corrosive force that shifts human focus entirely from the spiritual to the material. The text links the neglect of foundational religious duties directly to being driven by one's own urges. Later generations who abandoned their prayers did so because they were pulled along by these desires, a trajectory that eventually forces them face to face with their own evil (19:59).

This internal surrender manifests heavily in social and financial abuses. The passionate love of wealth leads to a hardened, greedy society where people consume inheritances without restraint, ignore the rights of orphans, and fail to urge one another to feed the poor (89:17-20). Describing this relentless state, Ibn al-Qayyim likens the intense heat of unbridled desire in a person's heart to a condition that causes a dog's continuous panting (Al-Amthal, 28)—a thirst that earthly consumption can never actually quench.

How is a believer expected to respond?

The solution presented is not the total eradication of human nature, but the active, conscious restraint of base impulses. True virtue, as Ibn Kamal Basha observes (Tafsir Ibn Kamal Basha, 6/ 84), lies in a balanced chastity—a middle ground that avoids both extreme deprivation and the weakness of yielding completely to desire. The ultimate victory is defined by an internal holding action fueled by a sense of final accountability.

Success against the heavy pull of piled-up gold and passionate greed hinges on this restraint. Rather than being swept away by the immediate allure of the material world, the one who fears the meeting with his Lord and restrains himself from base desires (79:40) is given a definitive promise: Paradise will be home (79:41).

3:14 Ali 'Imran

you consume inheritance greedily,
