Cup

الكأس

11 verses

Classical Arabic rarely uses the word ka's (cup) to describe an empty vessel; the term specifically designates a drinking instrument only when it is already full, as noted in Al-Asalib wal-Itlaqat al-Arabiyyah (p. 122). Across the eleven verses where the Quran mentions this word, it is exclusively reserved for describing the physical rewards of Paradise. The believers are promised an environment where the cup is never found empty, but is perpetually filled and readily offered by others.

What is in the cups of Paradise? The drinks served in these cups are not stagnant, but are drawn from continuous sources and given distinct aromatic profiles. In Surah As-Saffat, the text describes how "a drink will be passed round among them from a flowing spring" (37:45). The presentation of these drinks is highly structured and ceremonial. "Everlasting youths will go round among them," carrying "glasses, flagons, and cups of a pure drink" (56:17-18). The Quran specifies the exact mixtures placed in these cups for the righteous. In one instance, they "will have a drink mixed with kafur" (76:5). Later in the same chapter, the serving vessels are described as "silver plates," and the inhabitants "will be given a drink infused with ginger" (76:15, 76:17).

Does the drink cause intoxication or sin? Worldly drinks, particularly those consumed in gatherings, often lead to poor judgment, misbehavior, or impaired speech, but the cup of Paradise is explicitly stripped of these negative consequences. The believers "pass around a cup which does not lead to any idle talk or sin" (52:23). Commenting on the exact nature of this purity, Al-Tabari explains (Jami al-bayan, 21/37) that the wines of this world overwhelm the drinker and take away their faculties when consumed in large quantities. In contrast, the heavenly drink carries no such impairment or intoxication; the classical Arabs would describe this by saying there is no ghawl (hidden harm or negative effect) lurking within it to ambush the mind. Furthermore, Al-Qurtubi (Tafsir al-Qurtubi, 17/68) notes that the passing of this cup involves no vain speech among those who share it. The gathering remains dignified, completely untainted by the foolishness or arguments typically associated with drinking wine on earth.

What does an overflowing cup mean? The imagery of the cup serves as a capstone to the descriptions of physical fulfillment in the next life. The Arabic phrase ka'san dihaqan directly reinforces the inherent linguistic meaning of the word ka's. As Al-Wahidi records (Al-Tafsir al-Basit, 23/138), early Arabic linguists including Al-Layth, Al-Kisa'i, and Al-Mubarrad established that dihaq refers to something filled to the absolute maximum limit. To describe a cup as dihaq means it has been filled exceedingly, right to the brim, ready to overflow.

There is no scarcity or rationing in this realm. The Quran places this overflowing vessel alongside the other primary sensory rewards of Paradise. For those who were aware of God, there is supreme fulfilment: private gardens, vineyards, nubile, well-matched companions, and an overflowing cup (78:31-34).
