Choice

5 verses

When the Quran addresses the power to choose, it draws a strict line between the absolute authority of the Creator to decree and the conditioned decisions delegated to humanity in their daily affairs. God reserves unseen knowledge for Himself, disclosing it only to a messenger of His choosing (72:27). Within this divine framework, human beings exercise will over their social and financial arrangements, yet even these selections remain bound by strict commands of equity and exactitude.

When does a believer surrender their choice?

In matters of divine law and creation, human preference is entirely superseded. The Quran states flatly that the Lord creates what He pleases and chooses who He will, leaving humans no say in the matter (28:68). As al-Tha'labi notes in his commentary on this verse (al-Kashf wa al-Bayan, 20/483), the phrasing serves as a direct negation: the right of selection does not belong to them at all. Abu Bakr al-Jaza'iri (Aysar al-Tafasir, 4/93) applies this specifically to the error of idolatry, highlighting the fundamental flaw of people attempting to select their own gods when the power to choose belongs exclusively to the Creator.

This surrender extends from cosmic creation to specific legal and moral rulings. Once God and His Messenger have decided upon a matter concerning the believers, neither believing men nor women retain any freedom to claim a different choice for themselves (33:36). The text warns that rejecting this divine settlement in favor of personal preference is not an exercise of freedom, but an act of disobedience that leads far astray.

How does the Quran structure human decisions?

Where human choice is permitted, it is heavily regulated by the fear of bias and the demand for justice. When addressing the care of orphans, the Quran gives men the option to marry other women who seem good to them—two, three, or four (4:3). However, this selection is immediately restricted by a condition of fairness. If a man fears he cannot treat multiple wives equitably, his choice narrows to only one, or to his slaves, as the safest method to avoid injustice.

In financial transactions, choice involves selecting reliable people to secure a debt. The longest verse in the Quran mandates that debts for a stated term be written down by a scribe acting justly between the parties (2:282). The believers are instructed to call two men to witness the contract. If two men are absent, the creditors are given the choice to call one man and two women "out of those you approve as witnesses." The process accommodates human selection, yet dictates specific administrative shifts if the primary decision-maker is impaired. If a debtor is feeble-minded, weak, or unable to dictate the terms, the right to dictate transfers directly to their guardian, who must do so justly.

These human choices—whether approving a specific witness to prevent future doubts or deciding to hand over merchandise in an unwritten spot trade—operate under the constant observation of the Lawgiver. Even as people navigate their permitted preferences in debts and marriages, God protects His own chosen decrees and revelations by sending watchers to go in front of and behind His messengers (72:27).

2:282 Al-Baqarah

You who believe, when you contract a debt for a stated term, put it down in writing: have a scribe write it down justly between you. No scribe should refuse to write: let him write as God has taught him, let the debtor dictate, and let him fear God, his Lord, and not diminish [the debt] at all. If the debtor is feeble-minded, weak, or unable to dictate, then let his guardian dictate justly. Call in two men as witnesses. If two men are not there, then call one man and two women out of those you approve as witnesses, so that if one of the two women should forget the other can remind her. Let the witnesses not refuse when they are summoned. Do not disdain to write the debt down, be it small or large, along with the time it falls due: this way is more equitable in God’s eyes, more reliable as testimony, and more likely to prevent doubts arising between you. But if the merchandise is there and you hand it over, there is no blame on you if you do not write it down. Have witnesses present whenever you trade with one another, and let no harm be done to either scribe or witness, for if you did cause them harm, it would be a crime on your part. Be mindful of God, and He will teach you: He has full knowledge of everything.

4:3 An-Nisa

If you fear that you will not deal fairly with orphan girls, you may marry whichever [other] women seem good to you, two, three, or four. If you fear that you cannot be equitable [to them], then marry only one, or your slave(s): that is more likely to make you avoid bias.

28:68 Al-Qasas

Your Lord creates what He pleases and chooses those He will- they have no choice- so glory be to God, and may He be exalted above the partners they ascribe to Him!

33:36 Al-Ahzab

When God and His Messenger have decided on a matter that concerns them, it is not fitting for any believing man or woman to claim freedom of choice in that matter: whoever disobeys God and His Messenger is far astray.

72:27 Al-Jinn

He does not disclose it except to a messenger of His choosing. He sends watchers to go in front and behind
