The Quran evaluates the earlier scriptures through a precise critique of human intervention, detailing how texts held by Jews and Christians were altered, forgotten, and obscured over time. Rather than issuing a blanket dismissal of the Torah and the Gospel, the text focuses on what later generations did to their books: twisting words, hiding passages, and losing key parts of their original covenant.

How does the text describe the alteration of scripture? The Quran identifies specific mechanisms of textual and theological corruption. Some individuals "twist the Scripture with their tongues," a deliberate act designed to make people believe their own fabrications are part of the divine text when they are not (3:78). The verse emphasizes the intentionality behind this, noting that they attribute lies to God while fully knowing they are doing so.

Beyond active distortion, the text points to a loss of memory and commitment. Regarding those who say, "We are Christians," the Quran states they "forgot some of what they were told to remember" (5:14). This failure to preserve the complete covenant did not just result in a loss of knowledge; it fractured the community. The text asserts that as a consequence of this forgetting, God stirred up enmity and hatred among them, a division that will last until the Day of Resurrection, when they will finally be told what they have done.

What is the Quran's relationship to the previous books? The Quran presents itself not as an entirely disconnected text, but as a clarifying light sent to correct the historical record. It addresses the "People of the Book," explaining that the Messenger has arrived to expose much of what they had deliberately "kept hidden of the Scripture," while choosing to overlook much else (5:15).

The standard for these communities remains strictly tied to their own original texts. The Quran insists they have "no true basis" for their religion unless they actively uphold the Torah, the Gospel, and the new revelation sent down to them (5:68). However, the text anticipates resistance to this correction. It notes that the arrival of this new scripture, which makes things clear, is sure to increase "insolence and defiance" among many of them, advising the Prophet not to worry about those who defy God.

How does God respond to their theological claims? The text forcefully rejects specific assertions made by these communities, such as the claim by some Jews that "God is tight-fisted" (5:64). In response, the Quran declares that they are the ones who are tight-fisted, and that they are rejected for uttering such a statement. The reality, the verse counters, is that "God’s hands are open wide: He gives as He pleases."

The consequences for spreading false statements and inciting conflict are severe. The text describes a cycle where these groups attempt to kindle the fire of war, only for God to continually extinguish it (5:64). They try to spread corruption in the land, a behavior that distances them from divine favor, as God does not love those who corrupt.

Despite the sharp rebukes regarding altered texts, hidden verses, and broken pledges, the offer of reconciliation remains open. The scripture establishes that if the People of the Book would simply believe and maintain mindfulness of God, He would take away their sins and bring them directly into the Gardens of Delight (5:65).
