7 verses

Every crawling creature on earth and every bird flying on wings exists in communities parallel to human societies. The textual terminology for these creatures—often translated as animals, beasts, or livestock—encompasses everything from the heavy beasts of burden placed under human control to the multitudes of living things scattered across the land. The Arabic term dabbah broadly denotes any creature that moves or crawls upon the earth. These organisms are not merely background scenery in the natural world; they are deliberate creations whose biology, physical utility, and eventual return are intimately bound to the divine decree.

Are animals held to a spiritual order?

The natural world operates in a state of inherent obedience. Alongside the celestial bodies—the sun, moon, and stars—and earthly fixtures like mountains and trees, the animals yield natively in submission to God (22:18). Their existence is highly organized; rather than random scatterings of biological life, they function as distinct, structured communities just like human populations (6:38).

This physical and spiritual integration demonstrates a shared existential baseline. While human beings possess the agency to either submit or earn well-deserved punishment through disobedience and resulting disgrace, the beasts remain in perpetual, flawless alignment with the cosmic order (22:18). Their presence serves as a deliberate indicator of the Creator’s overarching design. The creation of humanity itself, alongside these diverse creatures scattered across the earth, provides continuous and physical signs for people of sure faith (45:4).

What purpose do earthly beasts serve?

Within this worldly framework, God specifically designed livestock and working beasts to interact directly with human civilization. The texts emphasize the subjugation of massive, otherwise untamable animals to human control, noting that they are things made by God's own hands for this explicit utility (36:71). They function as vital infrastructure; just as ships are provided for navigating the seas, riding animals are granted for traversing land routes (43:12). Classical linguistic usages highlight this physical relationship; as Al-Wahidi notes (Al-Tafsir al-Basit, 15/29), the Arabic root for galloping originally describes a rider striking the two sides of his beast with his feet to urge it forward.

Their biological continuity is sustained by the exact same mechanisms that uphold human societies. When God sends down rain, it is specifically purposed to revive dead land and provide drink to the many animals and people He has created (25:49). To ensure this continuity across generations, the Creator made mates for both humans and animals alike, enabling all earthly populations to multiply according to a shared biological imperative (42:11).

Where does the final Beast emerge?

While the terminology typically refers to everyday animals, classical exegesis also addresses the specific eschatological entity known simply as "the Beast" (Al-Dabbah). Early scholars recorded specific accounts regarding the physical location of its emergence in Mecca as a sign of the final hour. As noted by Ibn Kathir (Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 6/213), Abdullah bin Amr stated that the Beast will emerge from under a rock in Jiyad.

The exact origin point carries slight variations in classical transmission. Al-Jurjani (Daraj al-Durar, 2/416) documents an account from Ibn Abbas via Mujahid, which states that the Beast emerges from Ajyad. Within the exact same volume, Al-Jurjani records a separate transmission belonging to Abdullah bin Amr, also via Mujahid, specifying that the Beast will instead emerge from under the hill of As-Safa.

These creatures, whether they are the livestock utilized daily for transit or the final Beast marking the end of the worldly timeline, operate entirely under divine mandate. From the sprawling herds sustained by seasonal rain to the individual crawling insects, nothing has been omitted from the master Record, and in the end, they will all be gathered to their Lord (6:38).

6:38 Al-An'am

all the creatures that crawl on the earth and those that fly with their wings are communities like yourselves. We have missed nothing out of the Record- in the end they will be gathered to their Lord.

22:18 Al-Hajj

Do you not realize [Prophet] that everything in the heavens and earth submits to God: the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, and the animals? So do many human beings, though for many others punishment is well deserved. Anyone disgraced by God will have no one to honour him: God does whatever He will.

25:49 Al-Furqan

the Creator of the heavens and earth.’ He made mates for you from among yourselves––and for the animals too––so that you may multiply. There is nothing like Him: He is the All Hearing, the All Seeing.

43:12 Az-Zukhruf

who created every kind of thing, who gave you ships and animals to ride on

45:4 Al-Jathiyah

in the creation of you, in the creatures God scattered on earth, there are signs for people of sure faith;
